The Greek civilization was the first European civilization. At this point in time religion is not prevalent or influential. The European religion was borrowed from the Middle East. There are two main contributions from the Greek civilization. They were politics and secular. Polis the Greek word for city state is where politics came from. They had modern politics with the first democracy. It was divided into city-states that rule themselves in a democratic fashion. With this they have the majority vote. Secular was the non-religious way of looking at things. It was based on assumptions that human beings can use their own mental power to grasp the world they are living in.

The first two Greek civilizations were the Minoan civilization and the Mycenaean civilization. The Minoan civilization was the Island of Crete. This civilization was a very peaceful one surrounded by water. It was advanced in the fields of architecture, art, and indoor plumbing. It had no military fortification, with not too many weapons. No one knows why it disappeared. The Mycenaean civilization arouse on the Greek mainland. The inhabitants of this were not natives of Greece. It was not a unified civilization that was composed of independent city-states. It was an uncultured and illiterate civilization that was always fighting. The priests did not exercise a huge amount of power.

The next thing that happened to Greece was the Dark Ages. This is when the Minoans disappeared and the Mycenaean s entered a period of deep decline. No one could write and all achievements are wiped out. Very little is known of this time in history. Then the Renaissance came about which recovered the ability to write. It was a very artistic period. At this time the Classical Greek Ages began and it set standards and styles.

Classical Greece was independent and self-governed by a direct democracy. This works because the population is low. The citizenship is a restricted privilege to the wealthy. Male homosexuality is socially accepted at this time. There were people that were excluded in the society. This included four different groups. The first was poor people who had to afford military equipment to help defense of the city-state to be a citizen. The women were only seen as property and housewives. They were always under the authority of men. Foreigners were not considered citizens. They moved into the city, but were not born there. Then there were the slaves. This society was based on slavery. The Greeks enslaved other Greeks. They based their capturing on one s debt not race.

Archaic Greece consisted of Sparta and Athens. Sparta was very heavily militarized, but did not invade their neighbors. They made people slaves called Hellots. Young boys were taken from their homes to start military training. Women also went through military training. They had an intense feeling for equality, so therefore abolished money. Sparta had two kings who balanced each other out and had no individual power.

Athens was the home of art, culture, science, and democracy. It was the Home of Philosophy. They were a socially diverse civilization that included sailors, farmers, philosophers, and scientists. Athens evolved a political philosophy to solve conflicting interest between people. Tyrants emerged after the Aristocrats who were strong political leaders that established themselves as single rulers. Solon came about and institutes a system of citizenship. The poor were now able to vote. There were four classes based on wealth and only the top two were allowed direct role in the government.

After this the Persian Wars began. City-states were established at the Greek peninsula. The Persian Empire invaded and decided to take over the Greek peninsula. The first invasion was by Emperor Darius. He was defeated, in the Battle of Marathon, by the Athenians. The second invasion was by the son of the emperor. The Athenians and Greeks defeated the Persians on land in the Battle of Thermopoli.

The Athenian empire then came about. Athens is now the dominant power of Greece. They had the Delian-League, which was the association of independent Greek city-states that work together for gain. It was the Athenian Alliance. Athens was the super power of Greece.

Then the Peloponnesian War came about. This is when the Spartans and their allies go to war with Athens. The Spartans won which lead to the decline of the Greek civilization.

Macedonia then enters. They were agricultural people ruled by a king. It was a large city that was half Greek. Alexander the Great, their king, conquered Greece and Persia. He dies young and his empire is dived between his generals. The Hellenistic civilization started that was a Greek-Persian culture. The Classical Greek culture suffers because of Alexander s conquest. This civilization results in the downfall of Greece.

Stop Using the Altman-Z Score.

By Wesley Gray, PhD |2017-08-28T07:28:20+00:00July 23rd, 2011| Factor Investing , Research Insights |

Ed Altman is simply a legend.

Everyone in finance is familiar with the Altman Z-Score and many analysts use it religiously–despite the fact there has been 50 years worth of research suggesting there are better methods. The Altman Z-Score kinda reminds me of the CAPM: the CAPM has been shown to not be very effective , and yet, everyone still uses it?

Nonetheless, Prof. Altman single handily created an empire based on his original 1968 book/research on predicting corporate bankruptcy .

Prof. Altman went ahead and outdid himself with his new ZETA score :

The point of this post is to highlight some recent research that concocts a model that predicts better than the Altman-Z AND is relatively straight forward to implement (at least relative to the ZETA score, which is proprietary and involves a lot of leg work to reverse engineer).

Before we begin, here are some recent models showing that Altman-Z is dead:

  • Shumway (2001)
    • Shows that half of the variables included in Altman-Z are no longer predictive of bankruptcy–ouch.
    • He also identifies a model that trumps the Altman-Z in out of sample tests–double ouch.
  • Chava and Jarrow (2004)
    • Verify with expanded data that Altman’s model sucks vs. Shumway’s model.
    • Determine that controlling for industry effects can significantly improve bankruptcy prediction models.

What does this paper add to the party?

The authors devise a model that ends up improving the forecast accuracy by 16% compared to Shumway and Chava and Jarrow’s models (which in turns mean it is way better than Altman-Z).

Here is how they set up their prediction variables:

  • profitability measure=weighted average (quarter’s Net income/MTA)(1)
    • MTA=Market value of total assets=book value of liabilities +market cap.
  • leverage measure=Total liabilities/MTA
  • short-term liquidity=cash & equivalents/MTA
  • Recent relative performance=weighted average(log(1+stock’s return)-log(1+S&P 500 return)
  • Recent volatility=annualized stock’s standard deviation over the previous 3 months
  • Relative size=log(stock market cap / S&P 500 total market value)
  • Overvaluation factor=MTA/adjusted book value, where adjusted book value=book value+.1*(market cap-book value)
  • Stock price level=Log(recent stock price), capped at $15, so a firm with a stock price of $20, would be given a value of log(15) instead of log(20).
Here is the “explanation” from the text:

What the authors meant to say is that their weighted average is simply calculated as follows:
.5333* t+.2666*t-1+.1333*t-2+.0666*t-3.

Here is a table comparing the stats on the various measures above for the universe of firms and for firms that have failed:

The results are hypothetical results and are NOT an indicator of future results and do NOT represent returns that any investor actually attained. Indexes are unmanaged, do not reflect management or trading fees, and one cannot invest directly in an index. Additional information regarding the construction of these results is available upon request.

It certainly seems that the variables are capturing something regarding failed firms!

So how do we go about predicting bankruptcy/failure? Behold the magical distress formula:

After running some logistic regressions the authors determine that their model beats the best alternatives out there over a variety of time periods:

The results are hypothetical results and are NOT an indicator of future results and do NOT represent returns that any investor actually attained. Indexes are unmanaged, do not reflect management or trading fees, and one cannot invest directly in an index. Additional information regarding the construction of these results is available upon request.

The results are hypothetical results and are NOT an indicator of future results and do NOT represent returns that any investor actually attained. Indexes are unmanaged, do not reflect management or trading fees, and one cannot invest directly in an index. Additional information regarding the construction of these results is available upon request.

Here are the results from the logistic regression:

If you forgot to get a PhD in some quantitative field and you are not sure how to use these regression results, here is a quick background on logistic regression s:

  • Calculate the following:
    • Logit=-8.87-.09*PRICE+MB*.07-.005*RSIZE+1.55*SIGMA-7.88*EXRETAVG-2.27*CASHMTA+1.6*TLMTA-20.12*NIMTAAVG
    • P=probability of failure=1/(1+exp-(logit))

Once you have calculated your P’s you are ready to predict which firms are likely to go bankrupt. So how might one use this information? Well, if you could predict which firms are going bankrupt–assuming the market hasn’t already priced in a bankruptcy–you might be able to make some money. Let’s see.

Here are results of sorting portfolios based on “P”  every January and holding stocks for one year.

The results are hypothetical results and are NOT an indicator of future results and do NOT represent returns that any investor actually attained. Indexes are unmanaged, do not reflect management or trading fees, and one cannot invest directly in an index. Additional information regarding the construction of these results is available upon request.

Pretty wild, eh? Stocks with low probabilities of failure do well, but from a statistical standpoint, it is hard to say if there is any alpha. However, check out the high probability of default firms–wow–negative alphas galore!

We’re getting closer to affording our gold-plated Mercedes!

Investment Strategy

Strategy 1:

  1. Stop using Altman-Z to predict bankruptcy

Strategy 2:

  1. Calculate logits using the estimates from table 2
  2. Calculate the probability (P from above) of bankruptcy using the logit figures calculated in 1.
  3. Go long low P firms, and WAY short high P firms.
  4. Make money.

To juice up strategy 2:

  1. Focus on distressed firms in the extreme growth and value categories (see below)

The results are hypothetical results and are NOT an indicator of future results and do NOT represent returns that any investor actually attained. Indexes are unmanaged, do not reflect management or trading fees, and one cannot invest directly in an index. Additional information regarding the construction of these results is available upon request.

Commentary:

I’ve been playing with the ‘financial quality’ variables for one of our in-house ‘value factor’ models recently (every quant shop has to have one, right?). I’ll admit it, we were using Altman-Z as a component of that variable, but after doing some research I’m sh&$canning Altman-Z and going test this model out instead. No disrespect to Prof. Altman, but when the evidence shows something works better, why not use it?

Predicting Financial Distress and the Performance of Distressed Stocks

  • John Y. Campbell, Jens Hilscher, and Jan Szilagyi
  • A version of the paper can be found here . ( Here is the Journal of Finance version)

Abstract

In this paper we consider the measurement and pricing of distress risk. We present a model of corporate failure in which accounting and market-based measures forecast the likelihood of future financial distress. Our best model is more accurate than leading alternative measures of corporate failure risk. We then use our measure of financial distress to examine the performance of distressed stocks from 1981 to 2008.We find that distressed stocks have highly variable returns and high market betas and that they tend to underperform safe stocks by more at times of high market volatility and risk aversion. However, investors in distressed stocks have not been rewarded for bearing these risks. Instead, distressed stocks have had very low returns, both relative to the market and after adjusting for their high risk. The underperformance of distressed stocks is present in all size and value quintiles. It is lower for stocks with low analyst coverage and institutional holdings, which suggests that information or arbitrage-related frictions may be partly responsible for the underperformance of distressed stocks.

  • If you have RealPlayer or RealDownloader installed, it may be sending hidden and unwanted traffic to our servers. Some versions of Real’s software track your pageviews and send additional requests from your computer, which in turn triggers our anti-spambot measures. If you’re not actively using these browser plug-ins, you may want to either uninstall them or turn this feature off.

How to Compose Exceptionally Good Compare and Contrast Essay Outline

access_timeMarch 29, 2018

compare and contrast essay outline

Throughout the course of your education and career (if you choose to become a writer), you’ll have the opportunity to work on different writing assignments and, of course, essays are inevitable.

The essay is a piece of writing that methodically analyzes and evaluates a topic or issue. That’s why there are different types of essays, used to discuss, analyze, evaluate, or compare different situations or subjects e.g. argumentative essay , cause and effect essay , and compare and contrast essay.

Your ability to create an excellent paper depends on structuring a perfect outline. Throughout this post, I’m going to show you how to compose an outline for compare and contrast essay to get good grades (or positive feedback from the client) every time.

Compare and contrast essay outline

The easiest definition of compare and contrast essay that explore both the similarities and differences between two subjects by comparing or contrasting them. It’s very easy to mistake this style of essay writing for a simple comparison between some topics or subjects, but that’s not entirely correct. Always bear in mind that your essay has to serve a larger purpose and include the following:

  • Demonstrate that one thing is superior to another
  • Identify and clarify common misunderstandings
  • Provide a new way of doing or understanding something
  • State, elaborate, discuss something unknown
  • Support every claim with facts and accurate, reliable sources

When it comes to structuring the outline for this kind of essay, there are different methods you can follow depending on the organization.

Point-by-point pattern (organization by criteria)

This outline is primarily used to compare items or subjects that are almost similar or when you plan (or have to) evaluate only a few characteristics or criteria when comparing them. Use the diagram below to create the outline for the point-by-point pattern.

compare and contrast essay outline - point-by-point pattern

Block pattern (organization by item)

In instances when you have to compare items, situations, or topics that are entirely different or when there are multiple criteria to involve, the point-by-point pattern doesn’t function quite well. That’s why you should opt for block pattern or organization by item.

Why? The reason is simple; the same criteria don’t apply to different topics, people, objects, events, and so on. When the essay requires a multitude of approaches to explore, it’s important to learn how to organize it properly in a bid to ensure easy reading. Create the outline based on the diagram below.

compare and contrast essay outline - block pattern

Block pattern can be structured in a different manner as well. Instead of the separate paragraph for each point, you compare, you can set out one section to name their similarities and a second paragraph to analyze dissimilarities point by point.

Now that you know how to create a functional outline, you’re ready to move on to the essay writing process.

Introduction

The intro for this kind of essay doesn’t differ much from other types. It’s the part where you introduce the overall subject of the piece and specific items, situations, or events you have to compare and/or contrast. As seen in diagrams, the introduction should feature :

  • The mentioning of the main topic – begin with a hook sentence and detail specific to the topic itself. Your hook can be a quote, question, anecdote, anything you see fit for the particular subject you have to write about
  • Specific subjects to compare and contrast – of course, you can’t start writing about similarities and differences between two items out of the blue. That’s why you should set out a sentence or two to mention specific topics you’ll compare under the central theme
  • Thesis statement – it marks the tone of the essay and catches reader’s attention. Last sentence (or two) of your paper should account for a specific and concise thesis. There’s no need for wordiness in this part because thesis, as the entire introduction, shouldn’t be too long.

Once you’re done with the intro, you’re ready to move on to the body paragraphs.

Body paragraphs

A total number of paragraphs in the body section depends on a number of aspects or criteria you have to discuss. For example, if you have to make a comparison between two different events through two aspects, you’ll need two paragraphs. Three criteria require three paragraphs, and so on. Sometimes, you’ll get the amount of aspects to use for comparison/contrast from your professor or a client, while in other instances, you’ll just have to determine the number yourself during the research process.

When you get the title and aspects to compare but without a certain number of criteria to cover similarities and differences, you have to brainstorm. Take a blank piece of paper and write the first item in the left corner, the second item in the right corner. Make a Venn diagram and start analyzing.

compare and contrast essay outline - body paragraphs

REMEMBER: Typically, you don’t need more than three aspects to cover, unless otherwise noted.

When you start brainstorming and researching the topic, the chances are high you’ll find a wide array of differences and similarities. However, your essay has to be well-crafted, and you can’t include absolutely everything you find (that way you’d write forever). To determine what to compare or differentiate answer these questions:

  • Is this relevant for my course?
  • What matters to the argument I’m going to take (or I’m given)?
  • What’s informative and interesting?
  • What’s relevant to my assignment?

Each paragraph in the body should start with a topic sentence (point 1, criterion 1/item A, B) focused on the aspect you’re about to compare/contrast. Then, you proceed with details you find when conducting research. Remember, just like in other types of essays, thorough research is highly relevant here, too.

It’s not just about mentioning differences and similarities one by one and stating your opinion or argument about them. Every detail you find should be supported by substantial evidence, statistics, studies, official data, and so on.

To show comparisons and emphasize the overall effect, don’t forget to use some connectors such as:

  • At the same time, as well as
  • Both
  • Compared to
  • Correspondingly
  • In addition
  • In the same way
  • Just as
  • Likewise
  • Same as
  • Similarly

Of course, you can include connectors to express or heighten the contrasting effect. For example:

  • Conversely
  • Even though, although
  • However
  • In contrast
  • Meanwhile
  • Nevertheless
  • On the contrary
  • On the other hand
  • Unlike

For the best possible result and successful completion of the essay, the body paragraphs should be analyzed from the perspective of an independent analytic. Ideally, your paper shouldn’t be biased. You don’t want the reader of your paper to assume what item you prefer or despise automatically.

Conclusion

At this point, you have the introduction and body paragraphs, which indicates you’re ready to conclude the essay. Generally, this is the easiest part, but you should ensure it’s properly structured as well. Here’s what your conclusion should contain :

  • Summary of main points – at the very beginning of this part, you should summarize the main points you’ve made throughout the essay. It’s important to synthesize your thesis with info in body paragraphs
  • Evaluation – provide a short analysis of what you discussed in the paper or mention possible solutions. The approach depends on the nature of your subject
  • Significance – not only do you have to clarify the importance of the main topic, but also mention the significance of comparisons or contrasts. How to do this? It’s not that difficult; answer the What was my goal in showing similarities/differences between these items? Your response indicates their significance.

Post-writing stage

You finished writing the paper, but your work isn’t over just yet. Before sending or submitting the essay, it’s necessary to proofread and edit the paper to eliminate all mistakes and unwanted parts.

Proofreading isn’t only necessary for correcting typos or grammar, these seemingly unimportant errors that “everyone makes” break the reader from the flow of the paper and undermine its power of persuasion. When you finish the essay, read your work from top to bottom without doing anything. You’ll probably spot some mistakes, but don’t rush correcting them immediately. Then, start reading again and correct typos, grammar errors, and sentence constructions. Don’t resist the urge to rewrite some sentences for better effect.

Nowadays, in the era of technology, you might feel tempted to download software (or find grammar/spelling checker online) and let it do the work for you. First of all, they aren’t always correct, and secondly, your critical thinking skills will improve only when you do it yourself. The software can be used as additional essay help . Another useful idea is to ask a family member or a friend to read the essay and see if they can spot some mistakes.

You’re almost ready to submit your essay, check whether you included references (if not, do so) and you’re done.

100 Best Traditional Compare and Contrast Essay Topics for Students

100 Best Traditional Compare and Contrast Essay Topics for Students

Students like writing compare and contrast essays as they have enough space for creativity. Such papers allow expressing your thoughts regarding some contradictive issues. It makes more fun to draw a parallel between two people or objects instead of describing a single issue.

It does not mean, however, that compare and contrast essay is an easy assignment to complete. There are so many possible compare and contrast essay topics, and some of them are hard to carry out.

Keys to Writing Compare & Contrast Essay

Before you start, it is crucial to choose topics that you really know well. Most often, you should find two things that have enough differences and similarities. You can take two pets, cats and dogs, while comparing a food (i.e., banana) with music (i.e., hard rock) basically, makes no sense.

Of course, if you’re a part of Arts class where tutor appreciates uncommon parallelism, you may try your luck in your compare and contrast essay. You may talk about a sense of taste and the book of your favorite author. For instance, you may try to explain how it tastes to be Dracula. Or you can highlight how it smells to be Jean-Baptiste Grenouille from famous novel Perfume: The Story of a Murderer. Such creative comparisons are often appreciated and awarded with more than “A.” Original and unexpected compare and contrast essay topics serve as your ticket to special universities where Arts are studied. Along with a personal statement written by professional writers , such essay will increase your chances to get enrolled.

Sources to be Used

In any case, writing about things to compare and contrast is an activity which requires your full attention and creativity. But when you have to compare things objectively, you should operate facts. Just like an argumentative essay , your text will need corresponding evidence. Search for the primary and secondary sources on the given topics before you start your first draft. Make sure these sources are no older than 5 years. They should be as relevant as possible. Don’t forget to apply only credible sources  to reveal your topics. Those are:

  • Textbooks
  • Books
  • Documentaries
  • Academic journals
  • Scientific magazines
  • Newspapers
  • Official reports

How to Write a Compare and Contrast Essay

The traditional essay tips won’t work with compare and contrast paper. We have gathered the best ideas online to share with students . If you write such assignment for the first time in your school or college life, read information from us.

You need to keep in mind the most common writing mistakes school and college students make to avoid them.

Start with the type of your compare and contrast essay topic. The topics are divided into 4 different groups:

  • Events (point to the differences and similarities of some historical events or episodes from the book)
  • Situations (choose to compare two different cases or episodes from your life)
  • People or fiction characters (choose the story)
  • Places (describe different locations)

No matter what comparison and contrast topics you write on, you need to keep to the traditional structure of the academic paper.

  • Intro (background)

Start with a capturing and interesting hook. Outline what your topic is. Point to the main argument of your topic known as a thesis statement. This sentence or two usually come in the last sentence of your first paragraph.

  • Developing your arguments

You need to research your topic to choose three claims. Include evidence with the supporting points next to each argument. There should be up to three supporting points in each body paragraphs.

  • Refuting opponent’s arguments

This time, you need to research the topic to view the facts that contradict your thesis. It is important to choose at least one example and develop a paragraph with the counter-argument as well. Write down maximum two opposing views followed by a couple of your refutations.

  • Conclusion

Restate your thesis statement and stress why your side is right once again.

100 Compare and Contrast Topics for Your Essay

Moreover, use such helpful words as “because,” “for example,” “the writer mentioned…,” “according to the book/movie,” “from the given reading, we know that…,” “on the following page, I have found…”

Examples:

“Why do you believe Americans will win the next Olympic games?”

“According to the reading I have found in my college library, their team showed better results than Canadians during the last games.”

  1. Check possible examples of compare and contrast essays when working in your hook sentence. It has a great influence on the reader’s decision whether to read your text on a specific topic or not. You may add numbers, figures, facts – whatever to make your reader interested. On the whole, there are many types of hooks:
  • Anecdotes and jokes
  • Literary quotes
  • Quotes of famous people
  • Lines from poetry
  • Setting scenes
  • Scientific facts
  • Questions and rhetorical questions
  • Metaphors and similes
  • Thesis statements

We think it is better to write a thesis statement in the last sentence of the argumentative essay’s introduction to conclude.

  1. Brainstorm all the time. The best way to decide on two good compare and contrast topics to analyze is to brainstorm and write down possible versions on a blank paper. Once you choose the subjects, you have to organize your thoughts. Prepare a table where you will mention both similarities and differences between the two subjects.
  2. Get professional help and examples. Find online educational services which help to choose some good sources on the given topic. Those can be movies, books, articles, etc. It is the last pre-writing stage which is known as a literature review. School and college students conduct in-depth research to enrich their compare and contrast essay drafts with important details. If you miss any words to finish your essay, a literature review is a brilliant way to reach the necessary word count.
  3. Don’t forget about the formatting and in-text citations. Apply direct and indirect quotes to make your text longer and more persuasive. Citations will serve as the strong evidence to support your compare and contrast topics.

It was just a short preview of every section of your compare and contrast paper in English. Selecting the proper topics might take a while if you don’t have a list of sample topics in front of you. We are ready to share the best compare and contrast essay subjects with you right now. You may use any example as the subject for your comparative essay when the theme is not assigned to you.

Earth Science Experiments

Earth science experiments require more materials and time than science
activities. Often these experiments can become a science fair project by
using the scientific method.

Each of the experiments contains an
introduction that gives background information about the project. The
materials used for the different experiments usually can be found around
the home, are recycled materials or can be purchased at a nearby store.

Easy science experiments

These are some Earth science experiments that are fun and easy which you
can perform with a minimum of materials. Pressing Layers , a sedimentary
rock experiment, uses slices of bread, wax paper and books. Pumice and
obsidian is a fun experiment that examines how air bubbles can change
the texture of pumice so that the rock floats! Our Salt on a Stick
experiment pictured above uses just salt, toothpicks, clay and water.

Funny bones is a fun Earth science experiment using chicken bones. The
experiment is easy and you will be able to bend chicken legs and other
bones easily. Have you ever tried to balance a pencil on the edge of a
table? Try adding a potato and fork to the experiment and it get a
little more complicated. Learn more about this experiment called
Balancing Act .

Classic science experiments

Some of our experiments are classics or recent classics. The Mentos
experiment is an example of a recent experiment that has become a
classic. Try this fun experiment with a few extra hints that you might
not know about. Try to see if you can get your liter of pop to shoot 12
feet into the air.

Have you ever experimented with shooting
rubber bands just for fun. In our experiment Rubber Band Shoot Out you
will be testing the elasticity of different size rubber bands to see how
far them will travel. Get some friends together and have a rubber band
shoot out like the kids in the picture.

Paraphrase and Summary

Written by Jerry Plotnick, University College Writing Centre

  • Printable PDF Version
  • Fair-Use Policy

When should I paraphrase, and when should I summarize?

To paraphrase means to restate someone else’s ideas in your own language at roughly the same level of detail. To summarize means to reduce the most essential points of someone else’s work into a shorter form. Along with quotation, paraphrase and summary provide the main tools for integrating your sources into your papers. When choosing which to use, consider first your discipline and the type of writing in which you are engaged. For example, literature reviews in science reports rely almost exclusively on summary. Argumentative essays, by contrast, rely on all three tools.

Paraphrase and summary are indispensable in argumentative papers because they allow you to include other people’s ideas without cluttering up your paragraphs with quotations . These techniques help you take greater control of your essay. Consider using either tool when an idea from one of your sources is important to your essay but the wording is not. Space limitations may guide you in your choice. But above all, think about how much of the detail from your source is relevant to your argument. If your reader needs to know only the bare bones, then summarize.

Though paraphrase and summary are often preferable to quotation, do not rely too heavily on them, either. Your ideas are what matter most. Allow yourself the space to develop those ideas.

How do I paraphrase?

Whenever you paraphrase, remember these two points:

  • You must provide a reference.
  • The paraphrase must be in your own words. You must do more than merely substitute phrases here and there. You must also create your own sentence structures.

Finding new words for ideas that are already well expressed can be hard, but changing words should not be your chief aim anyway. Focus, rather, on filtering the ideas through your own understanding. The following strategy will make the job of paraphrasing a lot easier:

  1. When you are at the note-taking stage, and you come across a passage that may be useful for your essay, do not copy the passage verbatim unless you think you will want to quote it.
  2. If you think you will want to paraphrase the passage, make a note only of the author’s basic point (or points). You don’t even need to use full sentences.
  3. In your note, you should already be translating the language of the original into your own words. What matters is that you capture the original idea.
  4. Make sure to jot down the source as well as the page number so that you can make a proper reference later on.

When it comes time to write the paper, rely on your notes rather than on the author’s work. You will find it much easier to avoid borrowing from the original passage because you will not have seen it recently. Follow this simple sequence:

  1. Convert the ideas from your notes into full sentences.
  2. Provide a reference.
  3. Go back to the original to ensure that (a) your paraphrase is accurate and (b) you have truly said things in your own words.

Let’s look at examples of illegitimate and legitimate paraphrase, using a passage from Oliver Sacks’ essay “An Anthropologist on Mars”:

The cause of autism has also been a matter of dispute. Its incidence is about one in a thousand, and it occurs throughout the world, its features remarkably consistent even in extremely different cultures. It is often not recognized in the first year of life, but tends to become obvious in the second or third year. Though Asperger regarded it as a biological defect of affective contact—innate, inborn, analogous to a physical or intellectual defect—Kanner tended to view it as a psychogenic disorder, a reflection of bad parenting, and most especially of a chillingly remote, often professional, “refrigerator mother.” At this time, autism was often regarded as “defensive” in nature, or confused with childhood schizophrenia. A whole generation of parents—mothers, particularly—were made to feel guilty for the autism of their children.

What follows is an example of illegitimate paraphrase:

The cause of the condition autism has been disputed. It occurs in approximately one in a thousand children, and it exists in all parts of the world, its characteristics strikingly similar in vastly differing cultures. The condition is often not noticeable in the child’s first year, yet it becomes more apparent as the child reaches the age of two or three. Although Asperger saw the condition as a biological defect of the emotions that was inborn and therefore similar to a physical defect, Kanner saw it as psychological in origin, as reflecting poor parenting and particularly a frigidly distant mother. During this period, autism was often seen as a defence mechanism, or it was misdiagnosed as childhood schizophrenia. An entire generation of mothers and fathers (but especially mothers) were made to feel responsible for their offspring’s autism (Sacks 247-48).

Most of these sentences do little more than substitute one phrase for another. An additional problem with this passage is that the only citation occurs at the very end of the paragraph. The reader might be misled into thinking that the earlier sentences were not also based on Sacks.

The following represents a legitimate paraphrase of the original passage:

In “An Anthropologist on Mars,” Sacks lists some of the known facts about autism. We know, for example, that the condition occurs in roughly one out of every thousand children. We also know that the characteristics of autism do not vary from one culture to the next. And we know that the condition is difficult to diagnose until the child has entered the second or third year of life. As Sacks points out, often a child who goes on to develop autism will show no sign of the condition at the age of one (247).

Sacks observes, however, that researchers have had a hard time agreeing on the causes of autism. He sketches the diametrically opposed positions of Asperger and Kanner. On the one hand, Asperger saw the condition as representing a constitutional defect in the child’s ability to make meaningful emotional contact with the external world. On the other hand, Kanner regarded autism as a consequence of harmful childrearing practices. For many years confusion about this condition reigned. One unfortunate consequence of this confusion, Sacks suggests, was the burden of guilt imposed on so many parents for their child’s condition (247-48).

This paraphrase illustrates a few basic principles that can help you to paraphrase more effectively:

  • Refer explicitly to the author in your paraphrase. The passage above makes explicit right away that the ideas come from Sacks. Its indebtedness is signaled in a few strategic places. The single parenthetical note at the end of each paragraph is therefore all that is needed by way of citation. Referring to Sacks also strengthens the passage by clarifying the source of its ideas.
  • Don’t just paraphrase. Analyze. In the paraphrase of Sacks, the decision to split the original passage into two paragraphs adds an analytical dimension: the new passage doesn’t just reiterate his points but lays out the two-part structure of his argument.
  • Not all of the details from the original passage need to be included in the paraphrase.
  • You don’t need to change every word. For the sake of clarity, keep essential terms the same (e.g., autism, culture, children). However, avoid borrowing entire phrases (e.g., reflection of bad parenting) unless they are part of the discourse of your field (e.g., psychogenic disorder).

How do I summarize?

Summary moves much further than paraphrase from point-by-point translation. When you summarize a passage, you need first to absorb the meaning and then to capture in your own words the most important elements from the original passage. A summary is necessarily shorter than a paraphrase.

Here is a summary of the passage from “An Anthropologist on Mars”:

In “An Anthropologist on Mars,” Sacks notes that although there is little disagreement on the chief characteristics of autism, researchers have differed considerably on its causes. As he points out, Asperger saw the condition as an innate defect in the child’s ability to connect with the external world, whereas Kanner regarded it as a consequence of harmful childrearing practices (247-48).

The Power of Paraphrasing

Posted by englishwithjennifer on

In searching for new activities for my own lessons, I sometimes forget the value of tried and true forms of language practice. Last week I threw out a brief paraphrasing task to a private student, and he responded positively to the challenge. In fact, he requested that we do this more frequently and in greater quantity in the future. What value does this exercise have? Here are 6 reasons to include paraphrasing tasks in language lessons.

  1. Paraphrasing activates vocabulary and develops the learner’s sense of appropriate word choice. The learner must think of synonyms, recall other word forms, and reflect on connotations.
  2. Paraphrasing teaches synonymous grammatical structures.
  3. Paraphrasing improves learners’ grasp of English syntax by requiring them to play around with it.
  4. Paraphrasing raises a writer’s awareness of variation. Knowing how to reword a sentence can improve a composition by varying sentence length, sentence structure, and vocabulary.
  5. Paraphrasing is needed in academic writing. Learners who are moving on to university courses need to be able to paraphrase quotes.
  6. Paraphrasing emphasizes that forms convey our meaning, and meaning is most important in communication. The relationship between the two is that the more accurate we are with form, the greater chance we have of expressing our exact meaning.

In my next post, I’ll offer some tips for including paraphrasing tasks in your lessons. Till then, here are some resources worth checking out:

  • Purdue Online Writing Lab : Definition and models of paraphrasing. Clear contrast given between a legitimate paraphrase of a quote and a plagiarized version.
  • Duke University Libraries : Models of paraphrasing and formats for citing sources.
  • “Developing Paraphrasing Skills: A Pre-Paraphrasing Mini Lesson” by Jane Frodesen of University of California-Santa Barbara: A PDF file (7 pages) with detailed steps for teaching the initial thought process behind paraphrasing. Frodesen’s steps model a logical approach that can be used with upper level ELLs.

Excellent, practical tips – and informative resource links.

While most English teachers recognize the importance of paraphrasing in formal academic writing, it’s also a vital skill in public presentations and daily conversations. Paraphrasing, like so many other skills, also becomes easier with focused attention and consistent practice. Therefore, in both my academic writing and oral skills courses, I make it a standard practice to have students paraphrase sentences and paragraphs from newspaper articles selected by students in class. Students usually make significant improvements and gain a far better understanding of the difference between paraphrasing and plagiarism.

I agree with you. You make a good point about the value of being able to paraphrase outside academic contexts. Also, I think a very good tip is to allow the Ss to select the texts to be paraphrased. They are choosing something of interest to them, and they probably have done a quick scan to judge the language as level-appropriate. Finally, you stress the success of the task lies in frequency. So true. By making it a standard practice, you’ve made the process a familiar one. Thanks for sharing those throughts.

    Writing a winning cover letter

    By John K. Borchardt

Your CV cover letter is both an introduction and a sales pitch. “It should show what sets this individual apart from all others,” advises Jeffrey Stansbury , vice chair of the Department of Craniofacial Biology at the University of Colorado School of Dental Medicine in Aurora. Like any good sales pitch, your cover letter should motivate the customer to learn more about the product—in this case, you.

A good cover letter, like a good sales pitch, has several characteristics. First, like a good doctor, it does no harm: It avoids making a negative impression. Second, it demonstrates that the product suits the consumer’s—your future employer’s—specific needs. Third, it assures the customer that the quality of the product (you) is superb. Accomplishing all this is easier said than done. So how do you write a cover letter that will do you justice and earn an interview? First you need a plan.

If the cover letter is to be effective, it must definitely be tailored to the particular institution.

    The objective

“A successful candidate impresses the committee right off with the cover letter and makes the committee members actually want to dig through the CV and recommendation letters to pull out the details that start to validate the positive claims,” Stansbury says. “It also provides a glimpse into the applicant’s personality and gives some guidance as to whether or not they can communicate in an organized, effective way.”

One of the most important jobs of any good sales pitch is to avoid doing harm. Some cover letters inadvertently convey negative impressions of a candidate, especially if they “look sloppy or indicate an inability to communicate in English,” says H. Robert Horvitz , who shared the 2002 Nobel Prize for physiology and medicine and has chaired search committees at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge. “These things can kill someone’s chances,” adds Kenton Whitmire , chemistry professor and former chair of the chemistry department at Rice University in Houston, Texas.

Horvitz adds that cover letters “should be neat and professional,” and should fit on one page. Whitmire would allow applicants a bit more room: The letter, he says, should be “no longer than one to two pages.” To keep it short, “the cover letter should not reproduce the information in the CV, publications list, or other documents provided,” Whitmire says, “but it should be used as a vehicle to highlight those things that the candidate believes will make him or her a good match for the position at hand.”

More on writing a cover letter:

” The Commandments of Cover Letter Creation “

” The Cover Letter: Door Opener Par Excellence “

    The match

An effective cover letter doesn’t just emphasize your best qualities; it also shows how well those qualities are likely to mesh with the open position. “Applicants should begin by reading advertisements for faculty positions carefully and be sure that their background and goals are appropriate for the position in question. You lose credibility if you can’t make a case that you fit the ad,” Whitmire says. “If the cover letter is to be effective, it must definitely be tailored to the particular institution.”

“There’s no excuse for not writing a cover letter that shows how your education, experience, and interests fit with what the institution is seeking,” warns Julia Miller Vick, coauthor of the Academic Job Search Handbook , which is now in its fourth edition. “Not doing this would reflect laziness,” Horvitz observes. At best, Vick adds, “a form letter or one that is generic doesn’t accomplish much and leaves how the application is reviewed completely up to the reviewing committee.” At worst, a generic cover letter can make you seem undesirable.

“While many people applying for academic positions tend to think that the review process is an evaluation of their previous work—how good is it?—the issue that is as important is the match,” Whitmire says. “How will this person fit in here? The former is necessary, but the decision to interview will often be made upon research area or some other measure of fit to the department’s needs at that moment in time.”

    Planning

Begin by learning about the department in general and the open position in particular. Department websites are a good starting point, but don’t stop there. Go beyond the public information, and seek a sense of perspective. “It is best if candidates speak with their advisers and mentors to get some feel for the institution where they wish to apply,” Whitmire suggests. Close senior colleagues can serve the same purpose. Read beyond the job ad, and figure out what they’re really looking for.

Once you’ve got a fix on the institution, the department, and the open position, ask yourself what abilities or special qualities a candidate needs to excel in that position. Then determine which of your qualifications and accomplishments will particularly interest this department. Think about your research plans, past research accomplishments, special projects, and previous employment.

What evidence can you put forward that your background and plans prepare you well for this opening? How well do your research interests match those described in the advertisement? How well will they complement the work of the current faculty? How will your presence there make the department better? All this information will determine what to emphasize in your cover letter.

Writing the body of the letter

Your research accomplishments and plans should constitute the body of your cover letter for a research university position. At institutions where teaching is the primary emphasis, your primary focus should be your teaching experience, philosophy, and goals—and the suitability of your research program to a teaching-focused environment.

“An outline of plans for teaching and research needs to be specific to be meaningful,” Stansbury says. Focus on your most important two or three examples of proposed research projects and innovative teaching plans, such as developing novel courses. These examples should change from one cover letter to another, as you customize your letters for different jobs.

    The opening

After the body of your cover letter has been drafted, you come to the most critical step: writing an attention-getting introduction. Salespeople call this “having a handle.” Your handle is what you offer that makes you especially well qualified for a particular faculty opening. For example, summarizing how well your research interests match the ones the department advertised provides an effective letter opening.

The opening paragraph should be short but more than one sentence. After you’ve captured the reader’s attention with the handle, clearly but briefly summarize your most important—and relevant—qualifications. Anything less than a sharp focus and your readers will quickly lose interest and move on to the next application.

    Closing the letter

End your letter decisively. Don’t let it meander to an indefinite or weak close. A decisive close projects an image of you as assertive, confident, and decisive. It never hurts to close by requesting an interview.

    Editing

Make your cover letter an example of your best writing by editing it carefully. It must be easy to read. Focus and clarity of expression in your letter imply focus and clarity of thought—very desirable qualities in a faculty member.

Then return to the critical issue: whether your research interests, other qualifications, and personality meet the search committee’s requirements. Anything that doesn’t accentuate the match should be deleted ruthlessly.

Now, set your letter aside for a day or two before editing it again. The detachment you gain from this short break will help you see what you’ve written more clearly. Detachment makes it easier to determine whether your paragraphs flow smoothly from one to the next. The logic that seemed so obvious when you were writing may seem much less so a day or two later. Carefully review both your cover letter and your CV to be sure the information in them is perfectly consistent. Often, a committee won’t bother to try to resolve any discrepancies they find; they’ll just move on to the next application.

Finally, Whitmire advises, “be sure to have your cover letter reviewed by someone [who] can be trusted and who has experience. Often, getting a second opinion about how something sounds to the reader—i.e., what they got from reading the letter, not what you intended in writing it—can be very valuable.”

Becoming a  holistic health coach  can be a rewarding and satisfying long-term career. Coaching people to achieve higher levels of health brings personal meaning to your work as you apply your research and experiences in nutrition to  improve the lives of others .

But like any coaching venture, having the passion and appropriate training is just one part of the work. The other is being able to  create a sustainable business  built for growth. Here are some tips on developing a holistic health coaching practice that’s geared toward success.

    Create a Business Plan

All business owners—even independent consultants—should have a working business plan because it helps establish your purpose. That can be helpful in case you need a loan, want to take on a partner, or simply wish to clarify your goals. The American Nutrition Association has a  sample business plan  that can give you a good starting point for developing your own.

    Sharpen Your Brand

As you write your business plan, you’ll likely be led toward thinking of answers to questions like: What sets you apart from competitors? What type of clients are looking to attract? How are you using your insights to  build your business ? The more specific you can get in defining your brand, the easier it will be to attract clients who are looking for those qualities.

    Automate Every Process

No matter what level your business might be at, you have to be ready for growth. And for that to happen, you need systems in place to streamline your business. Invest in tools that track expenses, schedule client appointments, create client progress charts, and provide templates for email follow-ups and newsletters. The more you can automate your processes, the more time you have to focus on clients and marketing efforts, instead of day-to-day bookkeeping.

    Use Social Media Wisely

Social media sites such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn can be a boon, but they can also take a tremendous amount of time. Instead of trying to use them all, choose one that seems especially popular with your clients. For example, they may check Instagram 10 times per day, but only look at Facebook a few times per week. That makes it worth putting more energy into Instagram to establish your brand. When you do post, remember that you’re representing your business. You could add some personal pics to be more relatable, but on the whole, it’s better to share your expertise than your vacation photos.

    Expand Your Online Offerings

Creating blog posts that get traction is great, and there’s no need to stop there. Brainstorm creative ideas of what else you can offer. You might create infographics, e-books, podcasts, and videos. More specifically for example, you could even run an “online workshop” to break down a  holistic health  topic into several components. The point is to diversify your income stream by expanding your product line. For an online coach, that means developing more online resources that are a mix of free and paid content.

    Share Your Knowledge

Nearly every podcast needs expert guests, so research some that could use your insights and contact the moderator. This not only gives you an opportunity to build your brand, but it also expands your reach; ultimately, that can often lead to more clients. Be sure to promote the podcast on your website and social media so your existing clients can listen in too.

    Continue Your Education

Getting  certified as a holistic nutritionist  is a great step in your career; however, to be successful, consider a certification as the starting point, not an endpoint. You might want to specialize based on your areas of interest, such as  weight management ,  sports nutrition , or  youth nutrition . This greatly expands your client base and keeps you engaged with the subject matter at the same time.

Depending on where you’re at right now in your coaching business, an income of $1 million dollars may seem intimidating, or even out of reach.

But the fact is, scaling your coaching business to seven figures per year and beyond is much easier than you might think. The key is following a step by step process that is easily replicated and proven to work.

I recently had the pleasure of interviewing A.J. Mihrzad. A.J. is the owner of "Online Super Coach," where he passionately mentors fitness professionals and coaches in creating profitable online incomes doing what they love.

During our interview, A.J. spilled the beans on the exact four-step system he uses everyday to effortlessly grow his own coaching business and those of his clients.

If you implement these simple strategies you’re about to learn consistently, you’ll watch with delight as your own coaching business takes off with unlimited growth potential.

Related: 5 Secrets to Coaching Your Employees to Greatness

I’ll let A.J. take over from here.

    1. Who do you want to serve?

The first thing to consider is if you want to be a generalist or specialist. Using medicine as an example, consider the difference between a family physician and a cardiologist.

Cardiologists make at least twice the annual income of family physicians. Why is this? The answer, is that by specializing, cardiologists are solving a specific problem that provides life-changing results. Compare life-saving cardiac bypass surgery to visiting your family doctor for a cold…or hemorrhoids….or take your pick of mild health nuisances. I urge you to consider specializing in your own coaching business. For example, one of my primary target markets as a health coach is busy moms between 29 and 55 years of age who want to lose weight. It is much easier to convey my expertise and provide transformational results by focusing on this smaller segment of the weight loss market.

Next, you need to answer the following two questions to determine who you want to serve as your audience:

    1. What is the  No. 1 problem you can solve for others? Think about your skills, knowledge, and experience. How are you uniquely positioned to solve this problem in a powerful way?
    2. Who do you want to be a hero to? When you provide life-changing results in an authentic way, you create loyal followers who will hang on your every word and sing your praises to anyone who will listen.

Now that you’re clear on who you want as your target audience, the next step is attracting your ideal clients.

    2. How to easily attract your ideal clients.

These are the three primary ways that I market my coaching business and you can do the same.

    1. Pay per click advertising. This includes Facebook ads, Google Adwords, and LinkedIn ads. Pay per click (PPC) is the fastest way to start sending people to your funnel and content. Platforms like Facebook make it simple to target members of your audience with laser precision. With Facebook in particular, it’s easy to connect with your ideal clients through demographic, interest, and behavior based advertising. You’ll need to allocate a budget dedicated to PPC costs. Keep in mind, testing different ad variations and campaigns is the key to turning your advertising into a profitable venture.
    2. Strategic partnerships. The secret to developing a profitable partnership is finding someone who provides a service or product that complements what you offer. They are not your competition, but you have the same target audience. Let me give you an example. I partnered with a popular mommy blogger for my health coaching business targeting busy moms. She promotes my coaching business to her blog readers and I promote her blog to my clients and audience.
    3. Expert positioning. The best way to position yourself as an expert in your space is by creating insanely valuable content for your audience. This could be almost anything, including a blog post, video, or social media post. If your content is good enough, people will start sharing it on social media, helping your content to go viral. Place yourself in the mind of your audience. Determine their most pressing problems and fears. This will allow you to create quality content that your prospects will happily devour, leaving them hungry for more. While I’m generating leads through these three marketing channels, I’m sending them to the beginning of my sales funnel. And that leads us to the third step:

    3. Creating an automated sales system.

The first part of our funnel is the landing page or lead capture page.

Related: 4 Reasons You Should Seek Out a Business Coach

You’ll want to create a valuable incentive to entice people to sign up to your email list. Here are three of my favorite ways to do this:

    • Email autoresponder series
    • Four-part video series
    • Webinar

Email autoresponders and four-part video series are great, because they allow you to deliver value quickly through multiple points of contact. These multiple “touches” are essential to converting someone from an “interested” lead to a salivating buyer. It’s all about building a relationship and trust with your audience. Webinars are my personal favorite because this can shorten the trust building window to as little as one hour. Once again, all of these are completely automated.

At this point, you just need to do some simple math to reach your income goals. Let’s say your goal is $1,000,000 per year. This translates into $83,000 per month. One of the best ways to achieve this level of income is by creating a 90 day transformation package. If you price this package at $5,000, you’ll only need to sell 16 packages each month to reach your income goal.

If done correctly, your automated sales system will produce a very predictable and reliable income month after month.

Related: Why Would a Successful Entrepreneur Hire a Coach?

    4. Automating delivery of your package.

Forget any misconceptions you have about one on one coaching being better than group coaching. I have profited more by offering automated 12 week group coaching programs and my clients have often achieved better results. My busy moms audience is a perfect example. For six years now, I have been successfully selling an automated 12-week program for $5,000.

Every week for 12 weeks, a new piece of content is delivered through automated systems. This can easily be accomplished through email and membership sites.

You’ll need to decide which type of content will best serve your customers (videos, webinars, podcasts , etc.) and what information they will need to guide them through their transformation journey to the desired end result.

Organizing your content in a way that progressively builds on each other is important too. You’ll work your butt off in the beginning to get all of this set up. But once these pieces are in place, it truly becomes an automated, hands off income stream.

You’ll have so much more free time and energy to focus on other profitable activities in your business and more free time for leisure and family.

What’s next for your online coaching business?

You now have in your possession a proven system for growing your online coaching business to $1 Million per year and beyond. All that’s left to do is determine your income goal and put these 4 steps to work for you. By leveraging automation and technology, you’ll enjoy rapid growth while delivering incredible results to your clients. Top 100 Great Compare And Contrast Essay Topics

Writing a compare and contrast essay can be challenging for first-year college students. Writing a paper like this requires you to inspect two or more subjects for similarities or differences. Compare and contrast essays are not a basis for answering a specific question. Nor are they used for solidifying an opinionated argument. Your goal is to create analogies for the purpose of explanation or clarification. To write an essay in this format, you need to sharpen up your critical thinking skills.

    Finding The Right Sources

When writing an academic piece that aims to compare and contrast more elements together, it is important to do so in a manner that sparks interest and keeps the audience tuned in. Nonetheless, it is important to remain consistent since creative and objective pieces will tackle the issue in different ways. Similar to an argumentative essay the objective approach seeks to elaborate using accurate facts backed up by solid evidence.

Choosing a topic is a crucial stage. The best way to choose an appropriate topic is searching for credible references that come from primary or secondary sources respectively. These are usually accredited sources that date back to a minimum of five years, however, this may vary depending on the topic of discussion. Keep in mind that your reading list will form the backbone of the essay, thus to help give you a better idea of where to start looking here’s a short list of options:

    • Textbooks
    • Books
    • Documentaries
    • Academic journals
    • Scientific magazines
    • Newspapers
    • Official reports

Tips On How To Write A Compare And Contrast Essay

Regardless the topic or style that students choose to use when tackling such an assignment, it is vital to adhere to the traditional structure of an academic paper.

compare and contras essay writing tips

    Introduction
It is best to grab the reader’s attention right from the start by using an interesting source as the foundation of your argument. This will help outline what the topic is about and guide the discussion into the right direction through the thesis statement.

    Developing your arguments
As previously mentioned thorough research will allow one to create a minimum of three claims. Each should have its own individual supporting argument as to highlight these points in their respective paragraph.

    Refuting opponent’s arguments
A solid viewpoint is capable of disproving the opponent’s arguments by using facts and logic. Thus, it is important to be aware of what the opposition might say while conducting research, so one is well prepared. Try to make note of at least two opposing views what could potentially come up as preparation.

    Conclusion
Restate your thesis statement and stress why your side is right once again.

Finding Great Topics To Write About

Don’t limit yourself to topics that you already know inside-out. Compare and contrast essay writing can be exciting if you use it to discover something new. To find appropriate compare and essay topics to write about, you must engage in critical and analytical thought. You will need to find a topic that is not too broad or too narrow. Otherwise, you risk wasting your time and effort.

One of the most time-effective methods when teachers do not provide you with a list of topics is to go through various types of reading material, such as:

    • Newspapers
Using these types of sources as reading material is often highly recommended due to the fact that they tackle ongoing world events as well as the latest innovations in different spheres. Thus, one may choose to find an expert opinion or even bias information and use it to strengthen or prove a point.

    • News channels
Quite often various news channels offer a summary of all the major events that took place that day. This segments usually takes about half an hour of your time but can be used as a primary source if referenced properly.

    • Magazines/Journals
If economics, religions or politics are not exactly what you enjoy exploring as academic topics, then it is best to have a look at sports magazines, fashion journals, etc.

    • Internet
As one of the most easily accessible sources, it also represents one of the greatest sources of inspiration. Keep in mind to double check the credibility of the sources before using them.
Other means to stay in touch with global events is by attending various seminars, conferences or meetings and participate in the discussions carried out there.

Look for topics that are interesting and inspiring for you. As a comic book fan, I would love to read an essay about Superman versus his alter-ego Clark Kent. Superman is from a different planet. Unlike other superheroes, he doesn’t wear a mask because his true identity is Superman. He puts on a mask only when he becomes Clark Kent because that’s the only way he can blend in with our society. This is a great topic with many parallels in our modern world.

The technique that has been used in this painting is called Sfumato, using this technique you are able to achieve a depth, softening colours and edges with dark glazes. Some of the Elements of Design on this painting are shown quite clearly, while others are not, though the main elements executed are Value (Tone) – The glazes and paint are all relatively dark or at least don’t have much contrast, sticking mostly to the browns though some blues and greens are used and Colour – In many areas of the Mona Lisa there is shading, from the light browns of the face and chest to just under the chin which has been darkened dramatically to increase the look of realism.
As with the Elements of Design, the Principles of Design also have some that appear with more strength than others. The epitomes of Principles of the Mona Lisa would be Harmony – A lot of the colours are similar, and combine well with each other in the background and in the foreground. Balance – Balance was used a lot with her skin and her shadows, giving the shadows and hair a darker look because the light is close to it, giving a heavier effect. The media used would be oil paint on poplar.
