Essay Writing for Standardized Tests: Tips for Writing a Five Paragraph Essay

Most, if not all, high school and college standardized tests include a writing portion. Students are provided a writing prompt and must then write an essay on the topic. Writing for standardized tests can strike fear in the hearts and minds of students of all ages, but it doesn’t have to. If you know what to expect and understand how to write a five paragraph essay, you will be prepared to tackle any essay writing prompt.

Types of Essays on Standardized Tests

When you begin to write your essay for a standardized test, you must first decide what type of essay you are being asked to write. There are many different types of essays, including narrative, expository, argumentative, persuasive, comparative, literary, and so on. The type of essay will determine your topic and thesis. Essays for standardized tests are typically either persuasive, in which you will answer a question, or literary, in which you will write about something you read.

For standardized tests, students usually have to write a five paragraph essay, which should be 500 to 800 words long and include an introductory paragraph, three supporting paragraphs and a concluding paragraph.

The First Paragraph: The Introduction

The first paragraph will introduce your topic. The introduction is the most important paragraph because it provides direction for the entire essay. It also sets the tone, and you want to grab the reader’s attention with interest and clarity. The best way to tackle the introduction is to:

  • Describe your main idea, or what the essay is about, in one sentence. You can usually use the essay writing prompt or question to form this sentence.
  • Develop a thesis statement, or what you want to say about the main idea. When the writing prompt is a question, your thesis is typically the answer to the question.
  • List three points or arguments that support your thesis in order of importance (one sentence for each).

Voila! You’ve just written your introductory paragraph.

The Second, Third and Fourth Paragraphs: Supporting Details

These three paragraphs form the body of the essay. They provide details, such as facts, quotes, examples and concrete statistics, for the three points in your introductory paragraph that support your thesis. Take the points you listed in your introduction and discuss each in one body paragraph. Here’s how:

  • First, write a topic sentence that summarizes your point. This is the first sentence of your paragraph.
  • Next, write your argument, or why you feel the topic sentence is true.
  • Finally, present your evidence (facts, quotes, examples, and statistics) to support your argument.

Now you have a body paragraph. Repeat for points two and three. The best part about introducing your main points in the first paragraph is that it provides an outline for your body paragraphs and eliminates the need to write in transitions between paragraphs.

The Fifth Paragraph: The Conclusion

The concluding paragraph must summarize the essay. This is often the most difficult paragraph to write. In your conclusion, you should restate the thesis and connect it with the body of the essay in a sentence that explains how each point supports the thesis. Your final sentence should uphold your main idea in a clear and compelling manner. Be sure you do not present any new information in the conclusion.

Parting Thoughts

When writing an essay for a standardized test, outline your essay and get through each paragraph as quickly as possible. Think of it as a rough draft. When your time is up, a complete essay will score more points than an incomplete essay because the evaluator is expecting a beginning, middle and an end.

If you have time to review your essay before your time is up, by all means do so! Make any revisions that you think will enhance your “rough draft” and be sure to check for any grammatical errors or misspellings.

An introductory paragraph, as the opening of a conventional  essay ,  composition , or  report , is designed to grab people’s attention. It informs readers about the topic and why they should care about it but needs to add enough intrigue to get them to continue to read. In short, the opening  paragraph  is your chance to make a great first impression.

Writing a Good Introductory Paragraph

The primary purpose of an introductory paragraph is to pique the interest of your reader and identify the topic and purpose of the essay.

It often ends with a thesis statement .

You can  engage your readers right from the start through a number of tried and true ways. Posing a question, defining the key term, giving a brief anecdote , using a playful joke or emotional appeal, or pulling out an interesting fact are just a few approaches you can take. Use imagery, details, and sensory information to connect with the reader if you can. The key is to add intrigue along with just enough information so your readers want to find out more.

One way to do this is to come up with a brilliant opening line . Even the most mundane topics have aspects interesting enough to write about; otherwise, you wouldn’t be writing about them, right?

When you begin writing a new piece, think about what your readers want or need to know. Use your knowledge of the topic to craft an opening line that will satisfy that need. You don’t want to fall into the trap of what writers call “chasers”  that bore your readers (such as “The dictionary defines….”).

The introduction should make sense and “hook” the reader right from the start.

Make your introductory paragraph brief. Typically, just three or four sentences are enough to set the stage for both long and short essays. You can go into supporting information in the body of your essay, so don’t tell the audience everything all at once.

Should You Write the Intro First?

Keep in mind that you can always adjust your introductory paragraph later. Sometimes you just have to start writing. You can start at the beginning or dive right into the heart of your essay.

Your first draft may not have the best opening, but as you continue to write, new ideas will come to you and your thoughts will develop a clearer focus. Take note of these and, as you work through revisions , refine and edit your opening.

If you’re struggling with the opening, follow the lead of other writers and skip it for the moment. Many writers begin with the body and conclusion and come back to the introduction later. It’s a useful, time-efficient approach if you find yourself stuck on those first few words.

Start where it’s easiest to start. You can always go back to the beginning or rearrange later, especially if you have an outline completed or general framework informally mapped out. If you don’t have an outline, even just starting to sketch one can help organize your thoughts and “prime the pump” as it were.

Successful Introductory Paragraphs

You can read all the advice you want about writing a compelling opening, but it’s often easier to learn by example.

Let’s see how some writers approached their essays and analyze why they work so well.

“As a lifelong crabber (that is, one who catches crabs, not a chronic complainer), I can tell you that anyone who has patience and a great love for the river is qualified to join the ranks of crabbers. However, if you want your first crabbing experience to be a successful one, you must come prepared.”
(Mary Zeigler, “How to Catch River Crabs” )

What did Mary do in her introduction? First of all, she wrote in a little joke, but it serves a dual purpose. Not only does it set the stage for her slightly more humorous approach to crabbing, it also clarifies what type of “crabber” she’s writing about. This is important if your subject has more than one meaning.

The other thing that makes this a successful introduction is the fact that Mary leaves us wondering.

What do we have to be prepared for? Will the crabs jump up and latch onto you? Is it a messy job? What tools and gear do I need? She leaves us with questions, and that draws us in because now we want answers.

“Working part-time as a cashier at the Piggly Wiggly has given me a great opportunity to observe human behavior. Sometimes I think of the shoppers as white rats in a lab experiment, and the aisles as a maze designed by a psychologist. Most of the rats—customers, I mean—follow a routine pattern, strolling up and down the aisles, checking through my chute, and then escaping through the exit hatch. But not everyone is so dependable. My research has revealed three distinct types of abnormal customer: the amnesiac, the super shopper, and the dawdler.”
( “Shopping at the Pig” )

This revised classification essay begins by painting a picture of an ordinary scenario, the grocery store. But when used as an opportunity to observe human nature, as this writer does, it turns from ordinary to fascinating.

Who is the amnesiac? Would I be classified as the dawdler by this cashier? The descriptive language and the analogy to rats in a maze add to the intrigue, and readers are left wanting more. For this reason, even though it’s lengthy, this is an effective opening.

“In March 2006, I found myself, at 38, divorced, no kids, no home, and alone in a tiny rowing boat in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. I hadn’t eaten a hot meal in two months. I’d had no human contact for weeks because my satellite phone had stopped working. All four of my oars were broken, patched up with duct tape and splints. I had tendinitis in my shoulders and saltwater sores on my backside.

“I couldn’t have been happier….”
(Roz Savage, ” My Transoceanic Midlife Crisis .” Newsweek, March 20, 2011)

Here we have an example of reversing expectations. The introductory paragraph is filled with doom and gloom. We feel sorry for the writer but are left wondering whether the article will be a classic sob story. It is in the second paragraph where we find out that it’s quite the opposite.

Those first few words of the second paragraph—which a reader cannot help but skim—surprise us and thus draw us in. How can the narrator be happy after all that sorrow? This reversal compels us to find out what happened.

Most people have had streaks where nothing seems to go right. Yet, it is the possibility of a turn of fortunes that compels us to keep going. This writer appealed to our emotions and a sense of shared experience to craft an effective read.

Essay Tips: 7 Tips on Writing an Effective Essay

Essays can be crucial to admissions and scholarship decisions.

Essay Tips: 7 Tips on Writing an Effective Essay

Writing an essay often seems to be a dreaded task among students. Whether the essay is for a scholarship , a class, or maybe even a contest, many students often find the task overwhelming. While an essay is a large project, there are many steps a student can take that will help break down the task into manageable parts. Following this process is the easiest way to draft a successful essay, whatever its purpose might be.

According to Kathy Livingston’s Guide to Writing a Basic Essay , there are seven steps to writing a successful essay:

1. Pick a topic.

You may have your topic assigned, or you may be given free reign to write on the subject of your choice. If you are given the topic, you should think about the type of paper that you want to produce. Should it be a general overview of the subject or a specific analysis? Narrow your focus if necessary.

If you have not been assigned a topic, you have a little more work to do. However, this opportunity also gives you the advantage to choose a subject that is interesting or relevant to you. First, define your purpose. Is your essay to inform or persuade?

Once you have determined the purpose, you will need to do some research on topics that you find intriguing. Think about your life. What is it that interests you? Jot these subjects down.

Finally, evaluate your options. If your goal is to educate, choose a subject that you have already studied. If your goal is to persuade, choose a subject that you are passionate about. Whatever the mission of the essay, make sure that you are interested in your topic.

2. Prepare an outline or diagram of your ideas.

In order to write a successful essay, you must organize your thoughts. By taking what’s already in your head and putting it to paper, you are able to see connections and links between ideas more clearly. This structure serves as a foundation for your paper. Use either an outline or a diagram to jot down your ideas and organize them.

To create a diagram, write your topic in the middle of your page. Draw three to five lines branching off from this topic and write down your main ideas at the ends of these lines. Draw more lines off these main ideas and include any thoughts you may have on these ideas.

If you prefer to create an outline, write your topic at the top of the page. From there, begin to list your main ideas, leaving space under each one. In this space, make sure to list other smaller ideas that relate to each main idea. Doing this will allow you to see connections and will help you to write a more organized essay.

3. Write your thesis statement.

Now that you have chosen a topic and sorted your ideas into relevant categories, you must create a thesis statement. Your thesis statement tells the reader the point of your essay . Look at your outline or diagram. What are the main ideas?

Your thesis statement will have two parts. The first part states the topic, and the second part states the point of the essay. For instance, if you were writing about Bill Clinton and his impact on the United States, an appropriate thesis statement would be, “Bill Clinton has impacted the future of our country through his two consecutive terms as United States President.”

Another example of a thesis statement is this one for the “Winning Characteristics” Scholarship essay: “During my high school career, I have exhibited several of the “Winning Characteristics,” including Communication Skills, Leadership Skills and Organization Skills, through my involvement in Student Government, National Honor Society, and a part-time job at Macy’s Department Store.”

4. Write the body.

The body of your essay argues, explains or describes your topic. Each main idea that you wrote in your diagram or outline will become a separate section within the body of your essay.

Each body paragraph will have the same basic structure. Begin by writing one of your main ideas as the introductory sentence. Next, write each of your supporting ideas in sentence format, but leave three or four lines in between each point to come back and give detailed examples to back up your position. Fill in these spaces with relative information that will help link smaller ideas together.

5. Write the introduction.

Now that you have developed your thesis and the overall body of your essay, you must write an introduction. The introduction should attract the reader’s attention and show the focus of your essay.

Begin with an attention grabber. You can use shocking information, dialogue, a story, a quote, or a simple summary of your topic. Whichever angle you choose, make sure that it ties in with your thesis statement, which will be included as the last sentence of your introduction.

6. Write the conclusion.

The conclusion brings closure of the topic and sums up your overall ideas while providing a final perspective on your topic. Your conclusion should consist of three to five strong sentences. Simply review your main points and provide reinforcement of your thesis.

7. Add the finishing touches.

After writing your conclusion, you might think that you have completed your essay. Wrong. Before you consider this a finished work, you must pay attention to all the small details.

Check the order of your paragraphs. Your strongest points should be the first and last paragraphs within the body, with the others falling in the middle. Also, make sure that your paragraph order makes sense. If your essay is describing a process, such as how to make a great chocolate cake, make sure that your paragraphs fall in the correct order.

Review the instructions for your essay, if applicable. Many teachers and scholarship forms follow different formats, and you must double check instructions to ensure that your essay is in the desired format.

Finally, review what you have written. Reread your paper and check to see if it makes sense. Make sure that sentence flow is smooth and add phrases to help connect thoughts or ideas. Check your essay for grammar and spelling mistakes.

Congratulations! You have just written a great essay.

Colleges in Alaska

Why go to College in Alaska?

More than 1,000 miles north of any other American college or university, Alaska’s institutions of higher learning provide students a truly unique experience. Students take advantage of the “Last Frontier” landscape for education, skiing, hiking, studying; and explore the endless wilderness that is home to the largest National Parks in the country. In the classroom or online, students earn degrees in fields closely aligned with Alaska’s biggest industries and resources, such as oceanic studies, petroleum engineering, mining, wildlife conservation, and biology. Going to college in Alaska allows students to combine a traditional college experience with all the aspects that make the largest state in the U.S. one-of-a-kind.

Despite its enormous landmass, Alaska is one of the least populous states with approximately 800,000 residents. Nearly half of the state’s residents live around Anchorage, where the University of Alaska system’s largest campus is located with 20,000 students.

With some of the most diverse climates in the U.S., Alaska’s weather is all about where you are. There are tundra and ice-capped regions in the north, while the majority of the state is classified as subarctic, including Fairbanks. The most populous region, in the south, is oceanic, with high rainfall, short summers, and more mild winter temperatures than the rest of the state.

Number of Higher Learning Institutions

There are 35 institutions of higher education in Alaska, including three in the large University of Alaska System: Anchorage, Fairbanks, and Southeast.

Sporting Events

Alaska has fewer universities with athletic programs than most states. There are two major sports programs in Alaska at UA Fairbanks and UA Anchorage, where the Nanooks and Seawolves play, respectively. There are also semi-professional hockey and baseball teams in Alaska.

Although the sun doesn’t set until well into the early morning during the Alaskan summer, there are plenty of bars, restaurants, and entertainment options for college students. The areas near large state universities, such as Anchorage or Fairbanks, are particular draws for food and fun.

What Options are Available for Colleges in Alaska?

A student’s on-campus experience in Alaska depends on where they enroll. Many of the private and religiously affiliated schools feature small student populations and an intimate learning environment. The three UA universities are traditional larger, state schools with many undergraduate and graduate students, dormitories, lecture halls, athletic facilities, and many school services and clubs. Students can take advantage of their geographical and topographical surroundings by studying in some of UA’s best departments, such as atmospheric sciences, oceanic studies, or geology. These programs send students into the Alaskan wilderness with experts to experience their subject in person, like finding rare rock formations or measuring atmospheric change.

Online Programs

Online colleges in Alaska are accessible to students in the most remote parts of the state, in the heart of Juneau, or in the continental U.S. Taught via the web, distance learners study the same material as in-person students through a combination of videos, learning materials, assignments, and digital peer interaction. Some online schools in Alaska feature web chats between students, while others use a lecture-based system with more assignments. Programs can be taught asynchronously, as well, which allows students to learn at their own pace. Others use an accelerated format to help students shave off years of study (and tuition costs).

Online degree programs can result in a bachelor’s of arts or master’s of science, just as on-campus programs. Online learning is particularly popular with people who are working and require a flexible schedule; students who want to pursue a program only offered at a university far from them; or students looking to finish their degree quickly.

Hybrid Programs

Hybrid programs combine many of the benefits of online and on-campus programs. A hybrid program may consist of some combination of online courses and in-person courses, or it may offer classes that require an in-person and online component. Students who are enrolled in a hybrid program have less in-class time required each week or semester, which is perfect for working students and adult learners. However, in-class components allow students to access facilities, provide social interaction with professors and peers, and develop hands-on learning that may be absent from online learning.

Popular Degree Programs in Alaska

Alaska is a vast and beautiful state, best known for its arctic wilderness and icy peaks. The Alaska landscape plays a large role in the state’s most important industries and the popular college degrees. The oil and gas, fishing, mining, timber, and agriculture industries are the state’s driving economic powers, and schools such as UA confer a number of degrees in each.

  • Geology

The study of rock formations and change is important for understanding Alaska and its unique ecosystem. Geology can be used in a number of the industries that thrive in the state, such as natural gas or oil drilling, engineering, and mining.

  • Wildlife Biology

Polar bears, black bears, caribou, and moose are a few of the many animals that make Alaska’s wildlife unparalleled in the U.S. Students at UA and other schools in the state can study these animals, as well as plant life and sea life up close and personal.

  • Environmental Studies

From oceanic to atmospheric studies, many Alaska university students focus on understanding the environment and how to conserve it. Alaska is home to a wide range of conservation groups, as well as industries that extract natural resources.

How We Ranked the Schools

To determine the best programs, we looked at the most important factors prospective students, mainly common predictors of future success and a school’s commitment to online programs. This boils down to admissions rate, student loan default rate, retention rate, graduation rate, and the percent of students enrolled in online classes. All data points are taken from information provided by colleges and universities to the National Center for Education Statistics.

Each factor is weighted evenly in order to give an objective view and determine the best online master’s in management information systems programs. To calculate our rankings, we looked at a school’s ranking when organized by a single factor, and then averaged each category’s ranking to find an overall score: Admissions Rate (20%) + Default Rate (20%) + Retention Rate (20%) + Graduation Rate (20%) + Percent of Students Enrolled in Online Classes (20%) = Final score.

Education Trends in Alaska

Nearly one in every five Alaska residents holds at least a bachelor’s degree by the time they’re 25, and one in 10 have a graduate degree. These rates are nearly in line with the U.S. average. The amount of money spent per full-time student — and the percentage of tax revenue allocated for higher education — in Alaska are both more than twice the national average.

Paying for College in Alaska

One of the most important factors for prospective college students is the cost of tuition. Cost is a critical concern with either in-person schools or online colleges in Alaska. From tuition and fees to books, housing, and transportation, paying for college can be intimidating. However, in-state tuition for public schools in Alaska is actually much less than many other public universities, and lower than the national average.

Tuition Prices

Alaska is home to some of the lowest public four-year tuition rates in the United States. An Alaskan can earn a bachelor degree for just about $7,000 a year in tuition and fees, well below the national average. There are only a handful of states in the U.S. that feature lower public four-year rates.

Financial Aid

Every U.S. college student can apply for financial aid through the government by completing the FAFSA, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. This form, which can be completed online, allows students to see what funding opportunities they may be eligible for from the federal government and their school. Grants and scholarships, such as the Pell Grant, are given to students who have financial need or merit in a specific field. These financial gifts pay for tuition or other school costs and do not need to be repaid.

Students can also receive work-study funding, where the government pays students a stipend for work they do at their school. Direct, subsidized, and Perkins loans are several of the other types of financial aid that can be given to help cover school costs. However, unlike grants or scholarships, these loans must repaid.

Cost for Online Programs in Alaska

Federal funding isn’t only awarded to students who study on campus. Those at online schools in Alaska are eligible for the same funding and financial aid opportunities — from grants to loans — as their on-campus peers.

While online colleges in Alaska often have tuition rates comparable to on-campus learners, the entire learning experience may still be less expensive. Online students can save on costs traditionally associated with college, such as transportation, housing, meals, childcare, and books.

Cost of Living by Region

The cost of college varies greatly depending on where you live. Most of the schools are located in the state’s larger cities: Anchorage, Fairbanks, and Juneau. Comparing their rent prices, it is clear that Fairbanks is the least expensive, but also the most remote. All three cities have rent and housing prices that are fairly similar. Other U.S. cities popular for Alaska college students include Bozeman and Seattle. Seattle is far more expensive than Alaskan college towns, but Bozeman is much less.

Accreditation for Colleges in Alaska

A school’s accreditation is important for students to consider before selecting in-person or online school in Alaska. When a school is accredited, it means that other peer institutions, regulatory bodies, and government agencies certify the school as having met a set of criteria for a degree-granting institution. An accredited school’s degree carries the weight of academic rigor and prestige that employers and peers respect.

Schools are accredited either nationally or regionally. Most colleges and universities are accredited regionally by one of six accrediting agencies, depending on the school’s location. Regional accreditation is more popular and seen as more prestigious. It can apply to brick-and-mortar schools and online schools; private as well as public institutions. The six agencies are composed of peer institutions and recognized by the Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. These two organizations set standards for accreditation, but do not accredit schools themselves. National accreditation is less common and typically applies to small religious, vocational, and some online schools. Alaska schools are regionally accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities.

In addition to school accreditation, individual programs can be accredited by a professional association. For example, the American Bar Association accredits specific law programs.

Master’s in Communication Programs in Alaska

Currently, the only university in Alaska that offers a master’s in communication program is the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF). For students who do not live near UAF or who do not want to relocate for graduate school, out-of-state online programs offer additional opportunities. This may be especially important for students who live in Anchorage or Juneau as the University of Alaska Anchorage and the University of Alaska Southeast do not currently offer graduate programs in the field of communication.

Campus-Based Master’s in Communication Programs

The University of Alaska Fairbanks’ Department of Communication and Journalism offers a campus-based Master of Arts in Professional Communication that trains students in different forms of professional communication across a variety of settings. This program is suitable for individuals who are working in or would like to enter such fields as corporate and non-profit communication, health communication, media and marketing, and other careers that employ organizational and interpersonal communication skills and knowledge of media. UAF is a non-profit school that is regionally accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU).

This program, which is comprised of 30-34 credits, depending on whether students engage in a Teaching Assistantship during their enrollment, includes core classes covering topics such as the fundamentals of professional communication, communication research methods, fundamental communication theories, communication for professional training and development, and promoting diversity through communication. Students must also complete a master’s thesis or a non-thesis research project, and present on their research to a public forum, as part of the core requirements. After completing 24 credits of core courses, students select two electives based on their interests, and can choose courses in organizational communication, interpersonal communication, health communication, and team building and group dynamics.

Online Master’s in Communication Programs for Students in Alaska

While there are no schools based in Alaska that offer online master’s in communication programs, there are several out-of-state programs that accept students from Alaska. Students in Alaska who are interested in an online master’s in communication program should note that some online programs do not accept students from all 50 states. Students should check with an admissions advisor before applying to an out-of-state program to ensure that the school accepts students from Alaska.

Furthermore, some online programs require students to attend on-campus events or intensives during their enrollment. defines an online program as one that requires two or fewer in-person visits annually. However, within this definition, there are master’s in communication programs that are 100% online that do not require any campus visits throughout the program. The format of these in-person sessions varies by program. For example, some programs require students to meet on-campus during a set time period (typically from a weekend to a week long), while others allow students to choose which intensive(s) they attend from a list of events that may take place on campus or at a different location/city (students must still attend a specific number of these sessions, they just get to choose which ones).

For on-campus intensives, students are generally responsible for the travel and lodging expenses involved in attending these sessions, as they are not typically included in tuition costs and university/program fees. Therefore, students considering an online master’s in communication program should determine if any travel is required during the program, and if so, what are the expected costs of that travel before applying.

Master’s in Communication Programs in Alaska

Campus programs are defined as programs that have all of their instruction on campus, while Campus/Hybrid programs are defined as programs that blend on-campus and online/distance instruction, but whose courses are mostly campus-based. Online programs are defined as programs that are either 100% online with no campus visits, or those that require 1 to 2 campus visits per year. Online/Hybrid programs are defined as programs that require 3 to ~5 campus visits per year, with the rest of instruction taking place online.

My most influential person and the best friend is my mother

Jan 2, 2013   #1

This is my first rough draft of this essay. please critique it and thank you for your help!

The most influential person in my life is my mother. She taught me how to keep loving through the good and the bad. My mothers love is unconditional, it is a trait i wish to equip throughout my life. I was about 13 when I found out that my mother loved me unconditionally. The moment I lost my mothers necklace (that my grandmother gave to her) I thought she was going to kill me. I had never seen my mother so mad at me. I began to cry as she was yelling at me;I ran into my room, closed the door, and wept all night. The next day my mom walked into my room and told me she was sorry with the most regretful look on her face. I knew my mother was truly sorry. As we hugged in closure, she started to cry on my shoulder. I told my mom I will do anything to find it, but my mothers response was "That necklace will never amount to how much I love you". I will forever be amazed about my mothers love and care for me.

She is also incredible at getting things done. It does not matter of the situation, my mother always comes through with whatever was needed. She puts others needs before hers and I love that about her. Whenever someone asks for something, she is always the first one to deliver. When I play softball we usually have 2 games a day, during these games somebody always runs out of water. My mother being the caring person she is, offers to go buy them water from a store near by. During are breaks between games she rushes to go get water. When she returns she comes back with water, snacks, and ice for the ice chests. My mother always comes with more than needed just to keep her friends and loved ones happy. I will never understand how big her heart is, but I hope my heart takes after hers. My mother is my best friend. Like all best friends she gives me the best advice. She has always tells me to stop getting mad over the little things, to be more giving, and to strive for greatness. If there is anyone who knows my flaws better than me, it is my mother. She knows exactly how to make my mood change from mad to happy. She is a girls best friend and a perfect mother. Day by day I take into consideration the things my mother has taught me. She is my most influential person, not only because she is a loving mother, but because she is an impeccable woman whose wisdom and selflessness carry throughout her family.

The most influential person in my life is my mother. She taught me how to continue loving through the good and the bad. My mother s love is unconditional, it is a characteristicIhope to equip [I dont like the word equip here, I dont think it makes sense. Perhaps, try a characteristic that you hope to abide by, or follow, etc] throughout my life. I was about 13 when I found out that my mother loved me unconditionally. This sentence is repetitive. If the age 13 is important try incorporating it into the sentence before. The moment I lost my mothers necklace (that my grandmother gave to her)the (adjective) necklace that had been in my family for generations I thought she was going to kill me Dont know if I like this wording, maybe something like I stopped dead in my tracks, deathly afraid of her rash reaction . I had never seen my mother so mad,at me. I began to cry as she was yelling at mecontinued to yellat me is implied . I ran into my room, closed the door, and wept all night. Why? Did you feel like you disappointed her? The sentence as it stands isnt very strong because it doesnt provide any reasoning behind it. Yes, you lost her necklace. Yes, she was mad. But had you not experienced this type of reaction before? Provide something so that readers can relate. Without any context, it almost sounds like youre overemotional and thats not what you want The next day my mom walked into my room and told me she was sorry with the most regretful looka look of regret etched upon her face. In that moment I knew my mother was truly sorry and despite any remaining anger/disappointment, her love for me would be eternal . As we hugged in closure, she started to cry on my shoulder. I told my mom I will do anything to find it, but my mothers response was "That necklace will never amount to how much I love you". I will forever be amazed about my mothers love and care for me. I recommend trying to tell the story as it happened. It seems like for the most part what you are doing is telling the story, pause, reflection. Repeat. It might be more effective to tell it as it happened, reflections imbedded throughout. You have an emotional experience for both you and your mother that illustrates how it made your bond stronger. But you dont reveal much emotion throughout, but you should!

You need a linking sentence to combine the two ideas between unconditional love and her efficiency/dependability
She is also incredible at getting things done. It does not matter of the situation, my mother always comes through with whatever was needed. She puts others needs before herselfand I love that about herWe already know that you love her, so try ending her with an example . Whenever someone asks for something, she is always the first one to deliver. examples? When I play softball we usually have 2 games a day, during these games somebody always runs out of water.Try rephrasing it like this: Playing multiple softball games on the weekends, it is inevitable that my teammates will run out of water My mother being the caringcompassionate person she is, offers to go buy them water from a store nearby . During areour breaks between games she rushes to go getretrieve water. though there is no personal benefit? maybe? When she returns she comes back with water, snacks, and ice for the ice chests. Not necessary My mother always comesarrives prepared with more than needed justin order to keep her friends and loved ones happy. I will never be able to understand how big her heart isher heart is so enormous/welcoming , but I hope my heart takes after hers I think there might be a better way to phrase this to make it less repetitive but would retain the same idea . This new idea seemed to pop out of nowhere, find a link or try a new paragraph My mother is my best friend. Like all best friends she gives me the best advice. She has always tells me to stop getting madfretting/getting hung up over the little things, to be more givinggive more , and to strive for greatness. You want to keep the verbs all in the same tense. Stop, give, strive. If there is anyone who knows my flaws better than me, it is my mother. Are you sure you mean flaws? Saying flaws makes it seem really negative. She knows exactly how to makebrighten/improve my mood change from mad to happy. She is a girl s best friend and a perfect mother. Day by day I take into consideration the things my mother has taught me. She is mythe most influential person to me . Beyond her compassion for myself and othersnot only because she is a loving mother, but because she is an impeccable Not feeling that choice of words woman whose wisdom and selflessness carry throughout her evident in her daily activities/is an admirable characteristic

You have awesome ideas throughout, with a little editing on passive/active voice and remaining WITHIN the story instead of just an observer, it can be great! It is YOUR story, remember that. Though it is about your mother, you want to make sure that beyond just her actions, you discuss your emotional attachment and what not

Sample Essay 1

Wellesley, Influence of mother

It took me eighteen years to realize what an extraordinary influence my mother has been on my life. She’s the kind of person who has thoughtful discussions about which artist she would most want to have her portrait painted by (Sargent), the kind of mother who always has time for her four children, and the kind of community leader who has a seat on the board of every major project to assist Washington’s impoverished citizens. Growing up with such a strong role model, I developed many of her enthusiasms. I not only came to love the excitement of learning simply for the sake of knowing something new, but I also came to understand the idea of giving back to the community in exchange for a new sense of life, love, and spirit.

My mother’s enthusiasm for learning is most apparent in travel. I was nine years old when my family visited Greece. Every night for three weeks before the trip, my older brother Peter and I sat with my mother on her bed reading Greek myths and taking notes on the Greek Gods. Despite the fact that we were traveling with fourteen-month-old twins, we managed to be at each ruin when the site opened at sunrise. I vividly remember standing in an empty ampitheatre pretending to be an ancient tragedian, picking out my favorite sculpture in the Acropolis museum, and inserting our family into modified tales of the battle at Troy. Eight years and half a dozen passport stamps later I have come to value what I have learned on these journeys about global history, politics and culture, as well as my family and myself.

While I treasure the various worlds my mother has opened to me abroad, my life has been equally transformed by what she has shown me just two miles from my house. As a ten year old, I often accompanied my mother to (name deleted), a local soup kitchen and children’s center. While she attended meetings, I helped with the Summer Program by chasing children around the building and performing magic tricks. Having finally perfected the “floating paintbrush” trick, I began work as a full time volunteer with the five and six year old children last June. It is here that I met Jane Doe, an exceptionally strong girl with a vigor that is contagious. At the end of the summer, I decided to continue my work at (name deleted) as Jane’s tutor. Although the position is often difficult, the personal rewards are beyond articulation. In the seven years since I first walked through the doors of (name deleted), I have learned not only the idea of giving to others, but also of deriving from them a sense of spirit.

Everything that my mother has ever done has been overshadowed by the thought behind it. While the raw experiences I have had at home and abroad have been spectacular, I have learned to truly value them by watching my mother. She has enriched my life with her passion for learning, and changed it with her devotion to humanity. In her endless love of everything and everyone she is touched by, I have seen a hope and life that is truly exceptional. Next year, I will find a new home miles away. However, my mother will always be by my side.

The topic of this essay is the writer’s mother. However, the writer definitely focuses on herself, which makes this essay so strong. She manages to impress the reader with her travel experience, volunteer and community experience, and commitment to learning without ever sounding boastful or full of herself. The essay is also very well organized.

Sample Essay 2

Harvard, Favorite fictional character

Of all the characters that I’ve “met” through books and movies, two stand out as people that I most want to emulate. They are Attacus Finch from To Kill A Mockingbird and Dr. Archibald “Moonlight” Graham from Field of Dreams. They appeal to me because they embody what I strive to be. They are influential people in small towns who have a direct positive effect on those around them. I, too, plan to live in a small town after graduating from college, and that positive effect is something I must give in order to be satisfied with my life.

Both Mr. Finch and Dr. Graham are strong supporting characters in wonderful stories. They symbolize good, honesty, and wisdom. When the story of my town is written I want to symbolize those things. The base has been formed for me to live a productive, helpful life. As an Eagle Scout I represent those things that Mr. Finch and Dr. Graham represent. In the child/adolescent world I am Mr. Finch and Dr. Graham, but soon I’ll be entering the adult world, a world in which I’m not yet prepared to lead.

I’m quite sure that as teenagers Attacus Finch and Moonlight Graham often wondered what they could do to help others. They probably emulated someone who they had seen live a successful life. They saw someone like my grandfather, 40-year president of our hometown bank, enjoy a lifetime of leading, sharing, and giving. I have seen him spend his Christmas Eves taking gifts of food and joy to indigent families. Often when his bank could not justify a loan to someone in need, my grandfather made the loan from his own pocket. He is a real-life Moonlight Graham, a man who has shown me that characters like Dr. Graham and Mr. Finch do much much more than elicit tears and smiles from readers and movie watchers. Through him and others in my family I feel I have acquired the values and the burning desire to benefit others that will form the foundation for a great life. I also feel that that foundation is not enough. I do not yet have the sophistication, knowledge, and wisdom necessary to succeed as I want to in the adult world. I feel that Harvard, above all others, can guide me toward the life of greatness that will make me the Attacus Finch of my town.

This essay is a great example of how to answer this question well. This applicant chose characters who demonstrated specific traits that reflect on his own personality. We believe that he is sincere about his choices because his reasons are personal (being from a small town, and so forth). He managed to tell us a good deal about himself, his values, and his goals while maintaining a strong focus throughout.

Sample Essay 3

Harvard, Family illness: Mother’s fight with cancer

I am learning, both through observations and first-hand experiences, that there are many mishaps in life which seem to be unexplainable and unfair, and yet have devastating consequences. Disease fits into this category. Its atrocity does not stem from the fact that it is a rare or uncommon occurrence, since illness and disease pervade our lives as we hear numerous stories of sick people and come into contact with them each day. However, there is a marked difference between reading in the newspaper that a famous rock star or sports icon has tested H.I.V. positive and discovering that your own mother has been diagnosed with cancer.

Undoubtedly, the most influential people in my life have been my mother and father. It is to them that I credit many of my accomplishments and successes–both inside and outside of school. Throughout my childhood, my parents have always fostered and encouraged me in all my endeavors. At all my sporting events, spelling bees, concerts, and countless other activities, they have always been front row and center. My parents, in conjunction with twelve years of Catholic training, have also instilled in me a sound belief in a loving, caring God, which I have come to firmly believe. It therefore should not come as a surprise that the news of my mothers sickness would greatly alter my entire outlook on life. Where was my God?

My mother, in fact, had been aware of her condition in the spring of my junior year in high school. She deliberately did not inform my sister or me of her illness because she did not want to distract us from our studies. Instead, my mother waited for the completion of her radiation therapy treatments. At this time, she brought me into her room, sat me down on the same wooden rocking chair from which she used to read me bedtime stories, and began to relate her story. I did not weep, I did not flinch. In fact, I hardly even moved, but from that point onward, I vowed that I would do anything and everything to please my mother and make her proud of me.

Every subsequent award won and every honor bestowed upon me has been inspired by the recollection of my mother’s plight. I look to her as a driving force of motivation. In her I see the firm, enduring qualities of courage, strength, hope, and especially love. Whenever I feel discouraged or dispirited, I remember the example set by my mother and soon become reinvigorated. Instead of groveling in my sorrow, I think of all the pain and suffering that my mother had to endure and am revived with new energy after realizing the triviality of my own predicament. For instance, last year, when I was playing in a championship soccer game, my leg became entangled with a forwards leg on the other team, and I wound up tearing my medial cruciate ligament. I was very upset for having injured myself in such a seemingly inane manner. Completely absorbed in my own anguish, I would not talk to anyone and instead lamented on the sidelines. But then I remembered something that my mother used to say to me whenever something like this happened: If this is the worst thing that ever happens to you, I’ll be very happy, and you’ll be very lucky. Instantly, many thoughts race through my mind. I pictured my mother as a young thirteen-year-old walking to the hospital every day after school to visit her sick father. She had always told me how extremely painful it had been to watch his body become emaciated as the cancer advanced day by day and finally took its toll. I then pictured my mother in the hospital, thirty years later, undergoing all the physically and mentally debilitating tests, and having to worry about her husband and her children at the same time. I suddenly felt incredibly ashamed at how immature I had been acting over my own affliction. I gathered my thoughts and instead of sulking or complaining, helped coach my team to victory.

I am very happy to say that my mother is now feeling much better and her periodic checkups and C.A.T. scans have indicated that she is doing very well. Nevertheless, her strength and courage will remain a constant source of inspiration to me. I feel confident to greet the future with a resolute sense of hope and optimism.

The majority of the suggestions for this essay highlight the danger inherent in relying on an overly poignant topic, in this case the writer’s mother’s bout with cancer. Part of why the reactions to this piece are so passionate (and why there are so many of them) is because had the applicant just taken a slightly different approach, he could have had a powerful and touching composition on his hands. It is always frustrating when a piece with so much potential misses the mark. In this case, the material and emotion are all there. Had he spent more time and written with more sincerity, this essay might have been a real winner.

I wish this kid had started the essay with his mom sitting him down in the rocking chair. That would have been a powerful beginning. In general, using the introduction of the essay to paint a scene or mood can be very effective.

He should begin with the most simple and striking sentence possible, such as “On January 5, 1995, my mother learned that she had cancer.” Use real times and exact places. Let the most dramatic point go where it belongs, at the end of the sentence–also known as the stress point.

Because this topic is so personal, I yearn to know more about the student’s reaction to his mom’s cancer, how he and his family dealt with it over time. As written, things just seem a bit too tidy.

The author describes a valuable life lesson, but I find the writing style to be artificial and a bit maudlin. I imagine he resorted to the thesaurus more than once.

The writer tells us a sad story about his mother with cancer and how he has strived to do his best because of what his mother has been through. The topic can be a tear jerker, but this essay lacked the depth and richness that other essays with similar topics possess.

The experience obviously impacted the student very much. But what students do not realize is that they do not have to share such personal issues within the confines of a college essay.

I don’t believe the “epiphany” in the conclusion as it’s described. It’s too easy and convenient to be believable. He begins his description with “For instance,” which negates almost everything that follows. When he sees his mother in his mind, he “instantly” thinks this and “suddenly” does that, and finally “helped coach his team to victory.” He “coached” the team. “Cheered” maybe. “Coached?” No way.

This essay smells of contrivance. Yes, his mother’s bout with cancer affected him. Just not in the way he wants me to believe. This is the “lasting sanctifying effect” essay. Look at what the writer is actually saying (using his own words): I used to be “absorbed in my own anguish” and “lament” my bouts with adversity. But, “instantly” or “suddenly” (take your pick), I became a young man “confident to greet the future with a resolute sense of hope and optimism.” Why not say, “I used to be a thoughtless, immature teenager. My mother got cancer. I’m now a thoughtful, mature adult. You should admit me to _____.” His essay is no less subtle.

Causes and Solutions for increasing traffic congestion

Jul 30, 2009   #1

well. i wrote an esay about the traffic jam : the reason and solution, Pls check error as well as the structre .thanks a lot ^^

Topic2 : traffic congestion is increasing. Write about the cause as well as the solution to it

In modern life we have to face with many problems one of which is traffic congestion becoming more serious day after day. It is said that the high volume of vehicles, the inadequate infrastructure and the irrational distribution of the develpoment are main reasons for increasing traffic jam

The major cause leading to traffic congestion is the high number of vehicle which was caused by the population and the development of economy. To solve this problem, the government should encourage people to use public transport or vehicles with small size such as bicycles or make tax on private vehicles. Particularly, in some Asia countries such as Viet Nam, the local authorities passed law restricting to the number of vehicles for each family. The methods mentioned above is indeed effective in fact.

That the inadequate infrastructure cannot handle the issue of traffic is also an crucial reason. The public transport such as bus, subway or train is not available and its quality is very bad, especially in the developing countries. Besides, the highway and road network is incapable of meeting the requirement of increasing number of vehicle. Coping with these difficulties, the government should make an investment in the traffic facilties, namely, the publc transport need improving to become more modern and convenient. In addition, it is useful to build overpasses and more lanes in the streets.

Apparently, the irrational distribution and the lack of conscience make the traffic worse and worse. The head offices, the univeristies or hospitals often locate in the centre of city attracting a heavy flow of people in rush hour. To handle this situation, the government should allocate suitably , for instance some unviersity or office will be moved to the outskirt of city. It is necessary to encourage poeple obey the traffic rules which will make greatly change the problem of traffic.

Finally, its high time we were aware of the disadvatages as well as the solutions to the traffic congestion. With great effort from each individualist and government, our society will be definitely cleaner and well ï organized

In modern life we have to face with many problems [add in a comma] one of which is traffic congestion becoming more serious day after day.

The major cause leading to traffic congestion is the high number of vehicle which was caused by the population and the development of economy.

^ Consider revising

To solve this problem, the government should encourage people to use public transport or vehicles with small size such as bicycles or make tax on private vehicles

^ To solve this problem, the government should encourage people to use public transport or vehicles smaller in size, in order to prevent the roads from becoming packed too quickly. Likewise, owners of private vehicles should also be taxed.

"The public transport such as bus, subway or train is not available and its quality is very bad, especially in the developing countries."

Thus is it unavailable, or just poor in quality?

"…our society will be definitely cleaner and well – organized"
Why will our society be made cleaner when traffic congestion is alleviated? Consider revising the statement or adding in the cleanliness factor to your essay.

Jul 30, 2009   #3
I suggest you to give some examples and make some comparisons, whereby making the solution stronger. Consider Hong Kong as a good example. Of course traffic there is busy and it has more desity of cars than much of the cities in the world, but there are few traffic jams. You can get some deeper refection via Hong Kongs secrets of success.

Strictly speaking, your first sentence is not needed. If you want an introductory sentence like that, make it short: Traffic congestion seems to increase every day. Go right to the point in your second sentence, rather than prefacing what you want to say with "it is said that."

In fact, always avoid "it is said that," and any reference whatsoever to "modern society," which is too vague to mean anything.

That said, I like the clarity with which you identify three causes of congestion and then go on to discuss each. That is the format that scorers are looking for in test essays.

Thinking about your solution — more public transportation — it occurs to me that this would be very good for the environment too. If congestion provokes investment in public transportation, then we could say that congestion was a good thing!

As vehicles increase, so does parking chaos

With nearly 1,200 vehicles being added to the city roads daily, parking problems in Delhi are compounding by the day. Colony roads, parking slots, basements and open parking areas in buildings and even open spaces now remain clogged with vehicles.

Frequent arguments, fights and even murders over the issue are becoming commonplace. The authorities have fallen well short of providing a wholesome solution to the problem. And with five lakh people coming to the city every year, even the suggested solutions come with a huge question mark.

Way back in 2004, the Supreme Court’s Environment Pollution (Prevention and Control) Authority (EPCA) had suggested a slew of measures including promoting public transport, imposing higher parking charges and promoting multi-level parking to solve the problem.

But in the years hence, the chaos has only increased. Recently in July, the EPCA along with Centre for Science and Environment released a “parking policy” for Delhi. However, implementation is once again to be done by the Central and Delhi Governments, Delhi Traffic Police and various civic bodies, which have been found lacking.

EPCA Chairman Bhure Lal insists that if Delhi is to emerge as a vibrant city, it would have to change. He believes the private vehicle owners should be forced to pay steep rates while there should be an incentive to use public transport. “The Lajpat Nagar police find it hard to come out of the station there due to vehicular rush. This madness would have to end.”

The work done so far by the Government and civic bodies, however, remains a cause for concern. “The multi-level parking concept has failed in places like Sarojini Nagar, where the builder was allowed two floors of commercial space. The employees and visitors to these commercial spaces would eat up the parking and I fear due to the high rates of parking in future the entire space may become commercial,” he said.

While multi-level parking is seen as an expensive proposition, the idea to have these in parks has also been opposed by EPCA due to environmental concerns.

With few open spaces left, the surface level parking now comes at a premium, and Mr. Lal believes, like Singapore and Tokyo, Delhi can also explore the auction route.

On the ground level, the situation is more than alarming as various agencies have resorted to different plans for addressing the parking crisis. And most often the easiest option exercised is installation of a “No Parking” signage.

A case in point is Parliament Street right next to Parliament. Here the Traffic Police have barred parking on the side-walks between boundary walls of the buildings and the road, and the vehicles can be seen parked on the road itself outside Transport Bhawan and PTI Building.

No one knows the logic behind doing away with the parking where it was earlier as similar parking is allowed on the stretch of the road opposite the Parliament Street police station.

Nearby Rafi Marg tells a similar tale. Here the New Delhi Municipal Council decided to replace the area being used for parking with greens and consequently now vehicles are parked on the roads.

The illogical approach can also be seen in the difference between parking outside the Congress headquarters at Akbar Road and the BJP headquarters at Ashok Road. While outside the Congress office, vehicles are parked in an orderly manner between the road and the boundary wall as a clean tiled area has been created, there is chaos outside the BJP office as no such space has been provided.

“If parking on roads was wrong, then why a multi-lane parking in provided on the road between CBI office and SCOPE Tower at CGO Complex while the space over Sunehri Nullah can actually be used during daytime. This parking leaves just one lane for the vehicles,” said a regular.

A resident of Patparganj in East Delhi said the Government would do well to create gradient parking instead of high side-walks outside most housing societies. “The need of the hour is to provide parking areas. Merely wishing it away makes no sense. In a city where illegal colonies are getting regularised, the Master Plan is being tweaked to help regularise illegal structures and farm houses, would anyone be able to actually prevent people from purchasing vehicles or parking them,” he said.

Thane: Traffic jams is one of the reasons for an increase in noise and air pollution in the city. Environment activists feel that the crawling traffic leads to unnecessary honking by motorists. Also, the fumes emitted by vehicles are more at this time.

A study carried out by the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board reveals a high level of Respirable Suspended Particulate Matter in the air since the last few months. While Naupada registered an average of 123 mg/m3 against the normal level of 100 mg/m3, Balkum recorded 141 mg/m3 and Kopri 136.57 mg/m3.

Vidyadhar Walawalkar of Paryavaran Dakshata Manch, an NGO, said ‘‘Vehicles that move at high speed emit less amount of toxins in the air. But due to lack of space, bad roads and narrow lanes, traffic jams have become the order of the day. Due to this, toxics are emitted at a higher level from vehicles as most motorists leave their vehicle engines on even when they are stuck in traffic,’’ said Walawalkar.

Even in the case of noise pollution, the reason is the same, claim activists. Dr Mahesh Bedekar, who has been measuring noise levels in the city, said that Gokhale Road and Alok hotel junction recorded 85 db noise levels in the morning, while at Jambhli Naka is was 75-85 db in the afternoon. Ambedkar chowk recorded 80 db even at 9:45pm, his study shows. Meanwhile, the traffic police claim that they are doing their best to ensure smooth movement of vehicles.
