Business plan guide

What is a business plan and why do I need one?

A business plan is a written document that describes your business, its objectives and strategies, the market you are targeting and your financial forecast. It is important to have a business plan because it helps you set realistic goals, secure external funding, measure your success, clarify operational requirements and establish reasonable financial forecasts. Preparing your plan will also help you focus on how to operate your new business and give it the best chance for success.

Securing financial assistance to start your new business will be directly related to the strength of your business plan. To be considered a viable candidate to receive funds from a financial institution or investors, you must demonstrate that you understand every aspect of your business and its ability to generate profit.

A business plan is more than just something to show lenders and investors, it is also necessary to help you plan for the growth and progress of your business. Your business’s success can depend on your plans for the future.

Listed below are examples of questions to ask yourself when writing your business plan:

  • How will I generate a profit?
  • How will I run the business if sales are low or if profits are down?
  • Who is my competition, and how will we coexist?
  • Who is my target market?

What should be included in a business plan?

Although business plans can vary in length and scope, all successful business plans contain common elements. The following points should be included in any business plan:

  1. Executive summary (business description)
  2. Identifying your business opportunity
  3. Marketing and sales strategy of a business plan
  4. Your team
  5. Operations
  6. Financial forecasts of a business plan
  7. Other useful documentation

The executive summary (business description)

The executive summary is an overview of the main points in your business plan and is often considered the most important section. It is positioned at the front of the plan and is usually the first section that a potential investor or lender will read. The summary should:

  • Include the main points from each of the other sections to explain the basics of your business
  • Be sufficiently interesting to motivate the reader to continue reading the rest of your business plan
  • Be brief and concise – no more than two pages long

Although the executive summary is the first section of the plan, it is a good idea to write it last – after the other parts of the plan have been finalized.

Identifying your business opportunity

In this section of your business plan, you will describe what your business is about – its products and/or services – and your plans for the business. This section usually includes:

  • Who you are
  • What you do
  • What you have to offer
  • What market you want to target

Remember that the person reading the plan may not understand your business and its products and services as well as you do, so try to avoid using complicated terms. It is also a good idea to get someone who is not involved in the business to read this section of your plan to make sure that anyone can understand it.

Some of the things you should explain in your plan include:

  • Is it a new business venture, a purchase of an existing business or the expansion of an existing business?
  • The industry sector your business is in
  • The uniqueness of your product or service
  • The advantages that your business has over your competition
  • The main objectives of your business
  • Your legal business structure (sole proprietorship, partnership, corporation)

You can also include the date the business was registered/incorporated, the name of the business, its address and all contact information.

Marketing and sales strategy of a business plan

A strong business plan will include a section that describes specific activities that you will use to promote and sell your products or services. A strong sales and marketing section demonstrates that you have a clear idea of how you will get your product or service into market and can answer the following questions for the reader:

  • Who are your customers? Do some research and include details of the types of customers who have shown an interest in your product or service. You can describe how you are going to promote yourself to potential customers.

  • How are you going to reach your customers? You should know your customers and the best methods to reach them. Research will help you identify the most effective way to connect with your selected audience, whether it is through the Internet, over the telephone or by in-person contact.

  • Who is your competition? Once you understand this, you need to research their strengths and weaknesses and use this information to assess potential opportunities and threats to your business.

  • How are you going to position your product or service? Describe what makes your product or service unique to the market you are trying to target.

  • How are you going to price your product or service? This information will outline your pricing strategy, including incentives, bulk pricing and/or group sales.

Your team

Don’t underestimate the importance of this part of your plan. Investors need to know that you and your staff have the necessary balance of skills, motivation and experience to succeed. This section describes the people working in your business and how you plan to manage your activities. Information in this section can include:

  • A brief organizational layout or chart of the business
  • Biographies of the managers (including yourself)
  • Who does what, with a brief job description of each position
  • The needed skills of each position
  • Any other relevant information related to personnel

It is also a good idea to outline any recruitment or training plans, including the cost and the amount of time required.

Operations

The operations section of your business plan will outline your daily operational requirements, facility requirements, management information systems, information technology requirements and any improvements you may have planned. This section usually includes information like:

  • Daily operations – descriptions of hours of operation, seasonality of business, suppliers and their credit terms, etc.

  • Facility requirements – this includes things like size and location, information on lease agreements, supplier quotations and any licensing documentation

  • Management information systems – inventory control, management of accounts, quality control and customer tracking

  • Information technology (IT) requirements – your IT systems, any consultants or support service and an outline of any planned IT developments

Financial forecasts of a business plan

Your financial forecast turns your plan into numbers. As part of any good business plan, you need to include financial projections for the business that provide a forecast for the next three to five years. The first 12 months of forecasts will have the most details about costs and revenues, so investors can understand your strategy.

Your financial forecasts should include:

  • Cash flow statements – cash balance and the cash flow pattern for the first 12-18 months, including working capital, salaries and sales
  • Profit and loss forecast – projected level of profit based on your projected sales, the costs of providing goods and services and your overhead costs
  • Sales forecast – the money you expect to make from sales of your product or service

Some other things to consider include:

  • How much capital do you need (if you are seeking external funding)?
  • What security can you offer to lenders?
  • How do you plan to repay your debts?
  • What are your sources of revenue and income?
  • Forecasts should be covering a range of scenarios
  • Reviewing risks and developing contingency plans to offset the risks
  • Reviewing industry benchmarks/averages for your type of business

It is important to do your research to find out how your business compares to other small businesses in your industry.

Other useful documentation

The following sections are not always required, but can enhance any business plan:

  • Implementation plan – this section lists estimated dates of completion for different aspects of your business plan, targets for your business and accomplishments.

  • Appendices – these should include supporting material, such as licences and permits, agreements, contracts and other documentation that support your business plan.

Who should write my business plan?

Your business plan should be prepared by you, the entrepreneur. It is your business and your plan, but do not hesitate to ask for help from your management team, consultants, accountants, bookkeepers, copy editors or other experienced people.

The manhattan project essay

Literature Essays

Background

In the twelvemonth 1940, the US authorities started their ain atomic arms project that was subsequently named The Manhattan Project. This was due to the fact that some American scientists, who were comprised largely of European refugees, feared that Nazi Germany, under the leading of Adolf Hitler, was already carry oning their ain atomic arms development ( Independence Hall Association, n.d. ) .

The development of the atomic bomb was so moved to Los Alamos in New Mexico where the undertaking was overlooked by Robert J. Oppenheimer and his squad. In the forenoon of July 6 1945, the first atomic bomb was successfully detonated. 2 types of atomic bomb were subsequently developed. The first 1 was a gun-type fission arm that used uranium-235 while the 2nd 1 was a much powerful and efficient but besides more complicated implosion-type atomic weapon utilizing plutonium-239. Both the bomb was given the nickname “Little Boy” and “Fat Man” and was subsequently detonated in Hiroshima and Nagasaki severally. The atomic bomb was ab initio to be detonated in Nazi Germany. But with the resignation of Nazi Germany after their leader, Adolf Hitler, committed self-destruction, the attending was so turned on the Japanese who was still contending in the war.

The initial program to coerce the Japanese to give up was to launch Operation Downfall ( Trueman, n.d. ) . The programs of the operation were to go on to bomb Japan utilizing the US bombers followed by a monolithic land invasion. If the invasion were to go on, the US military will lose more than a million forces. To avoid such calamity from go oning, the US president, Harry S. Truman, insisted to utilize the atomic bomb on Japan.

On the forenoon of August 6 1945, the atomic bomb, Little Boy, was dropped over Hiroshima ( Atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima, n.d. ) . The blast of the atomic bomb is tantamount to 12,000-15,000 dozenss of TNT and it destroyed about 5 square stat mis of the metropoliss. Furthermore, some 70,000-80,000 people died as a consequence of the detonation and around 70,000 people were injured. Similarly, the atomic bomb that blasted in the mid-air of Nagasaki besides caused a significant sum of casualties. The high figure of deceases was non the lone wake of the atomic detonation, but it besides affected the environment and besides the people’s wellness about Hiroshima every bit good as Nagasaki.

Environmental Impacts

The oncoming of Japan’s incubus was marked, as the two atomic bombs that were set in gesture by the United States exploded in Hiroshima and Nagasaki severally. The black impacts of both atomic bombs basically rest upon the strength, energy and power liberated at the point of bombing. Nuclear arms such as the atomic bomb conveying about a relentless sum of devastation to the environment and the clime on a graduated table imitable to any other deadly world armament. In retrospect, non merely that the usage of atomic bombardments in the war gave humanity a elephantine blood discoloration, but besides shows us that an atomic bomb is no mere detonation, it besides has the ability to go forth legion impacts on the environment.

There were many environmental effects caused by the atomic bombardment. One of them was the emanation of the enormous sum of radiation ( Energy and Radioactivity, 2006 ) . Like any other atomic bombardment, radioactive dust happened during the bombardments of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Fallout, harmonizing to the Oxford lexicon, is defined as the procedure in which radioactive atoms are carried into the ambiance following a atomic detonation and falling back onto the land subsequently as dust or in precipitation. As a consequence, thick ‘black rain’ that contains radioactive carbon black and dust started falling from the sky, making the land as risky radioactive H2O. The black rain did non merely damage the milieus and the substructures but it besides caused radiation poisoning through inspiration and the ingestion of contaminated nutrient and H2O ( Energy and Radioactivity, 2006 ) . The radiation emitted lasted for decennaries where many unfortunate victims who were exposed to intense sum of high radiation had to bear with leukaemia and Keloids ( Energy and Radioactivity, 2006 ) . Contaminated countries with high degrees of residuary radiation remained contagious for an drawn-out sum of clip, seting 1000s in long periods of deadly frailty. The procedure of healing is frequently slow ensuing in huge impairment of the immune system. Since there is no effectual intervention, decease follows in a affair of yearss.

Similarly, the detonations of the atomic bomb besides led to environmental taint. The taint of H2O is one of the most terrible. When populating organisms go on to imbibe the H2O that is exposed to radiation, be it humans or animate beings, they are really likely to endure from serious wellness jobs. Worse still, when rivers in the metropoliss were contaminated, the current brought the radioactive H2O to other parts of Japan and finally into the ocean, distributing the radiation beyond Japan itself. This implies that even people who don’t remain in or near Hiroshima and Nagasaki will still be affected by the radiation. The taint of dirt and air is merely every bit atrocious. When the bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki exploded in the center of the air, high grade of radiation was emitted and carried by air current to countries beyond the metropoliss. It so dispersed bit by bit and led to radioactive air taint. Similarly, workss and agribusiness merchandises further off from the centre of detonations were besides contaminated along with the dirt. The radioactive dirt became highly sterile while the agricultural merchandises that didn’t get burned up could no longer be consumed due to the radiation they contain. The taint gave Japan a difficult clip recovering and it took months before the Nipponese citizens could set pes in either of these metropoliss once more.

In add-on, the atomic bombardment in Hiroshima and Nagasaki besides brought about thermic radiation that burned the environing with utmost heat. The detonations generated powerful shockwaves together with tremendous bolides that killed 1000s of people within seconds. This finally gave rise to a big firestorm as the single fires combined, and before long, both metropoliss were covered in thick black fume. Through the procedure of burning, the firestorms used up significant sum of O in the ambiance to bring forth fire ( “The Effectss of Nuclear Weapons, ” n.d. ) . The fume released into the ambiance by the wild fires besides produced carbon black that causes the planetary temperature to fall. In a recent survey, scientists have found out that, a atomic war that involves 100 Hiroshima-sized bombs would do the planetary temperature to fall to Ice Age degrees. ( “The Environmental Effects of Nuclear Weapons, ” n.d. ) . This would hold an overpowering impact on all of humanity.

Besides, the wake of the atomic bombardment in Hiroshima and Nagasaki farther resulted in drastic clime alteration. As celebrated earlier, when the atomic bombs were dropped, an tremendous sum of heat moving ridge was released into the air. This huge heat moving ridge was subsequently suppressed comparatively by the procedure of rapid chilling. These fortunes were the perfect scene for the mass production of azotic oxides ( Chen, 2010 ) . The monolithic sum of azotic oxides that is transported to the ambiance weakens the concentration of the protective ozone bed which is indispensable to barricade and protect us from the deathly ultraviolet beams from come ining the Earth’s surface.

The azotic oxides formed decreased the ozone degrees in the Northern Hemisphere and such depletion utter enormous change to the Earth’s clime. A survey shows that atomic conflict affecting atomic bombs would convey about an tremendous hole in the Earth’s ozone bed that would uncloak 1000000s of lives to inordinate sum of the blaze sunbeams ( Chen, 2010 ) . It would allow even more ultraviolet beams straight from the Sun to perforate the mere surface of the Earth. With that, if exposed, effects such as risky Burnss and many other serious ecological effects would emerge. Besides, the addition in inordinate sum of ultraviolet beams leads to a steep rise in tegument malignant neoplastic disease and cataracts among worlds. Furthermore, like we worlds, land and aquatic animals, who apportion the same life infinite, would besides confront the reverberation of the atomic bomb in a way that it disrupts their regular nutrient ironss that would bring the full ecosystem to a deadlock ( Jha, 2006 ) .

Ultimately, all the effects that came about from the detonation of the atomic bomb in Hiroshima and Nagasaki shows a clear proof of the Earth’s breakability towards the overpowering desire of ultimate power, selfishness and the assumptive nature of worlds who ignore the debasement of the environment. This irresponsible and unreflective behaviour would finally ensue in inevitable effects that bring a sense of sorrow and agony that we worlds should bear upon ourselves in the concluding phase. In short, the atomic bombs dropped in Nagasaki and Hiroshima brought devastation to the environment of the metropoliss, at the same clip contributed to planetary pollution and perchance a batch more post-effects that have yet to be discovered.

Mitigation/Remediation Activities

As if they knew there was no clip to grief over their devastated province of their quintessential metropoliss when the war came to an terminal with explosion of two barbarous, powerful atomic bombs. Everything was gone as they came. But yet, they fret non. The Japanese, although have had their morale shattered, stood right back at their pess contemplating solutions to the affair at custodies. And today, their attempts are proved success with grounds of both metropoliss recovered about absolutely from the bombardments. So, the inquiry remained on how did the Nipponese manage to revive Hiroshima and Nagasaki the metropoliss of ruins into functional cities today? ( Coping with Chaos, 2006 )

After the Atomic Bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, it was wholly vanquished. Buildings destroyed, infinite dead and resources were absolutely depleted. Peoples started happening ways on how to retrieve from such impact and to do it whole once more. As awful as it sounded, radiation seemed to be the worst impact for people in Hiroshima as it can non be to the full recovered for those who were affected. The radiation led to diseases that brought decease to impossible sum of people and that it can barely be avoided. While victims that are affected were hospitalized in Hiroshima A-bomb Hospital, some were evacuated to countryside without any pick in order to avoid from farther fondnesss. On the other manus physicians and nurses were largely among the victims therefore, ensuing in failure to execute their responsibility to assist others. There was besides a major deficit in medical supplies due to the bombardment that destroyed most of it ( Coping with Chaos, 2006 ) . From here we can clearly see that there is no specific solution in footings of medical AIDSs for victims that were affected.

Besides that, due to radiation released from atomic reactions, the environment of the bead site was contaminated. In the coming of atomic war, it is clear that no one knew the destructive power these atomic bombs could enforce moreover the effects. Hence, when Hiroshima and Nagasaki occurred, there was no solution to the job until they analyze the effects the bombs had caused after the incident. Without an unravelment at that minute of clip, the lone manner to drive these radiations is to trust on the elements’ natural ability to disintegrate over clip which is 700 million old ages, for Uranium-235 that detonated at Hiroshima, and 24,000 old ages, for Plutonium-239 at Nagasaki severally ( Takahashi, 2011 ) . The grounds of human being today is due to the fact that when the bombs were dropped, it detonated in the air, ergo cut downing the existent harm of the radiation to the environing at land nothing. This is because with an air explosion, a detonated explosive arm in the air, the fission merchandises rise into stratosphere where they disperse therefore cut downing the consequence of atomic radioactive dust as the radiation released from the bolide of the bomb is kept from touching land ( Glasstone A ; Dolan, 1977 ) .

As clip base on ballss, people in Hiroshima and Nagasaki needed a manner to lift once more and they needed it urgently but they knew it was impossible to retrieve instantly. It was truly difficult for them to get by with the wake of the whole bombardment but their hope ne’er died. Hiroshima today is so in a good and peaceable status surrounded by approximately one million people with self-awareness merely like any other metropolis around the Earth ( Powell A ; Hiroshima, 2005 ) . Buildings were destroyed, monolithic diseases took topographic point but a wiped out metropolis has to be rebuilt in every facet particularly in footings of physical, emotional and psychological. Not long after the work stoppage, Hiroshima came up with an thought on building a peace commemoration but it someway turned out to be a peace memorial park. Powell and Hiroshima ( 2005 ) asserts that the centrepiece was transformed into a peace museum as recollection of the tragic event of atomic work stoppage. At this point, we knew that any metropolis would hold given up at this really phase but Hiroshima took its recovery measure by measure to lift once more and the lone thing they needed was clip. Today, Hiroshima and Nagasaki left a grade in the history of turning the impossible to possible by reconstructing what was destroyed into modern metropoliss that bear the regalia of hope for all humanity.

Decision

Coming to a decision to the atomic bombardments of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan, we as a squad make believe that such a calamity has left a lasting cicatrix non merely to the people of Japan, but besides to the whole universe. The two bombs that were dropped upon these two locations were the first and last use of atomic arms in warfare up-to-date. The people of the universe bear informant to one of the most ruinous semisynthetic catastrophe which causes enormous harm to guiltless lives and the environment.

The big Area of Effect ( AOE ) caused by this incident has caused a immense harm to the environment on a really big graduated table. The environmental harm varies from land, sea, and air. Radiation emanation was the biggest environmental impact caused by these atomic bombs. The H2O was polluted with high cloud cover, coloured, risky gustatory sensation, smell, unsuitable pH degree and much more. The land and air are both severely polluted which consequences in contaminated and damaged dirt for harvests and dirt, which affects nutrient beginning. The two countries became a atomic barren for a period of clip and people are get downing to believe that such a thing is unrecoverable. But Japan has proven them incorrect.

Despite confronting such a awful state of affairs, Japan managed to retrieve from the incident. Both Hiroshima and Nagasaki is now even livelier than before which serves as a reminder of the human ability to retrieve and renew. The extenuation and redress procedure took old ages for them to acquire back on their pess. However, they succeeded in the terminal, turning the tabular arraies from a contaminated environment in every way, to a suited topographic point and home ground of the life, may it be worlds, animate beings or workss. The people of Japan did non trust on the environment’s natural ability to disintegrate the radiation wholly over 100 1000000s of old ages and set things into their ain custodies.

Atomic bombardment has caused nil but problem to the universe, and we believe that it is nil less than an inexcusable act of mass slaying. We besides strongly believe that the uninterrupted use of such is inhumane and would ensue in a more terrific devastation sing the status of the planet now is even worse than earlier in environmental footings. No affair what the ground may be, devastation as such to the environment is inexcusable as it creates a channelling concatenation reaction which brings injury to those around it.

This is my 2500 word essay about responsibility and keeping accountability of my personal equiptment. Responsibility the state or fact of being accountable or to blame for something. Personal responsibility is demonstrating your follow-through initiative and a personal commitment to being accountable to your personal belongings. Being responsible in the US Army has got to be of the utmost importance in my opinion. Being unrespossible of your property can lead to a secrurity breach or worse. Soldiers must be and act responsibly in every situation they may find themselves in, whether it’s in or out of uniform. Forgetting my wallet at work is a good example of not being resposible of my personal belongings.

My wallet is a very important part of being in the military. If i forget my wallet somewhere were people can get it. Its basically like handing my life over to them. It has badges and such to get into secure compounds. It has my bank cards which they could then get into my finances, a call roster which has over 70 names and number to which would lead to people being prank called and so on and so forth. My wallet also has my driver license so people can know my name and where i live. There are thing people dont think about when they have there wallet on them but when they lose, forget, or leave it somewhere it can cause mayhem inside your company to make sure there isent a security breach.

Being a well maintained soldier is your duty and responsibility to yourself, your crew, your platoon, your company, and your unit. Dangers can come if you are not responsible of your things. If there was a security breach into a secret building could be catastrophic to the security of the united states. If you do forget your wallet or equiptment you should tell someone as soon as possible so you dont put your crew or anyone in danger. As a junior enlisted soldier you have very minimal responsibility such as taking care of yourself and your equiptment such as all items issued to him weather it be a weapon, NVG’s, clothes, a vehicle, or some TA-50. If you dont take care of these items you can be subjected to an article 15 under UCMJ law. The NCO’s responsibility is to make sure that the soldier is accountable for the items and has eyes on these items when needed, so that he can report it to his higher command. Accountability also includes the most important piece of equipment the soldier him or herself. Anything can and will happen especially in combat, that’s why the team member should make sure that the team or squad leader know where the soldier and his or her equipment is at all times.

The Army spends a lot of money on equipment and belongings for the soldiers, so the Army expects to know where its equipment is. No matter what someone is always responsible for equipment in the Army. It goes to the highest officer to the lowest enlisted personal in the chain of command and back up again. Responsibility and accountability are two of the main factors in being a successful soldier in today’s Army. There are many good examples of responsibility in a normal workday. Soldiers need to be responsible for their actions. It is very important to be responsible when working in the aviation field of the United States army.

If you damage or find something damaged or wrong with the aircraft such as a drive shaft or push pull tube. being responsible would mean you would tell someone right away or write it up in the aircraft maintainance book. which shows each and everything that is wrong with the aircraft. which then the maintainers would come in the next day and fix whatever needed to be fixed on that aircraft. Being responsible as a maintainer would include doing maintainance by the book. Replacing what needs to be replaced in such a manner that the crew flying on that aircraft shouldnt have to worry about the maintainance after it is done.

    Don’t Believe the Algorithm

Blind faith in machines (and machine learning) has left us vulnerable to biased and incoherent AI. The solution? A healthy dose of skepticism and human oversight.

The Notting Hill Carnival is Europe’s largest street party. A celebration of black British culture, it attracts up to two million revelers, and thousands of police. At last year’s event, the Metropolitan Police Service of London deployed a new type of detective: a facial-recognition algorithm that searched the crowd for more than 500 people wanted for arrest or barred from attending. Driving around in a van rigged with closed-circuit TVs, the police hoped to catch potentially dangerous criminals and prevent future crimes.

Marketing and promotional content 6 Product strategy 7 The importance of consumer behaviour 7-8 Future trends 8-9 Conclusion 10 Bibliography 11 Appendix 12 Introduction I have been asked by my lecturer to analyse the editorial and advertising content of a lifestyle magazine of my choice. The magazine that I have chosen is Glamour; the reason that I chose this magazine, is because it is Britain’s number one women’s magazine and has been in circulation for over seventy years.

Glamour is a prestigious fashion magazine first printed in 1939 by Conde Nast Publishing who are responsible for numerous fashions and lifestyle magazines including Vogue, Men’s Vogue, Allure, GQ and many more. Topics addressed by the magazine include: Love, Fashion, Sex, Beauty, Health and lifestyle and Celebrity gossip. Glamour is recognised as a world class fashion magazine and it is now published in the US, UK and numerous countries across Europe. Analysis of advertising content

The advertising director for Glamour is Grace Dawson, and the fashion Assistant is Kerryn Grady, the products advertised are all premium brands like Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, DKNY, DG and many more. The number of pages used in the magazine to advertise products greatly exceeds the number of pages with editorial content. The front cover of the magazine is dominated by Danni Minogue, a highly influencing style icon for more than two decades and the main topics addressed in the March 2010 issue.

The magazine is printed on high quality glossy paper sending out a message of being luxurious, some of the advertising companies have attached samples of the products they are advertising and there is also a free gift offer from Benefit make up with every subscription to the magazine. The back cover is a celebrity endorsed by Charlie Theron for J’adore Dior perfume, a high cost to any marketing department, and on the inside of the back page is Cheryl Cole endorsing L’Oreal Hair products, inside of the front cover is a double spread advertising Lancome.

These are the most expensive advertising spaces that a company can buy in a magazine as they are the first and last pages the reader looks at making them more memorable. There are a number of advertisements for men’s products such as aftershaves throughout, which are more likely a tactic by marketers to target women to buy these products as gifts as it is solely directed towards a male reader.

There is a strong presence of sex in the advertising content; many of the images are provocative images to advertise the clothing ranges mostly, images that would not have been acceptable to print in the editions in the early 1940’s, people of today are becoming desensitised towards these images as they are more familiar with them. draw:custom-shape draw:frame Analysis of editorial content The editorial content starts on page 74, all pages before this are mainly advertisements and some acknowledgements and details of all editors, directors and managers.

The editorial content starts with the topic of sex, which is then followed by a conservative political view and an exclusive interview with David Cameron although there is not much depth to the editorial content the writer takes a more light hearted approach researching Cameron’s personal life, his appearance and daily regime than into political views and issues surrounding the conservative party. The front cover has all the main issues addressed in the magazine in a bold red and black font with the largest most important being “723+ styles fixes”.

Inside about quarter of the way in is a page devoted to readers letters and how much they have appreciated articles from previous issues and how they have helped the reader in their personal situations, with the winning letter receiving a camera to the value of ? 150. draw:line draw:line draw:line draw:line draw:custom-shape draw:frame Magazines target market Glamour magazine is marketed towards career orientated heterosexual women, who are fashion conscious with targeted reader age of between 19 and 50.

The socio economic class of the women that read this magazine would be typically either lower middle class or middle class, professional or junior management, educated and possibly with a political interests and a high level of disposable income as the goods advertised are designer brands such as D G, Calvin Klein and premium brand make up like Lancome and Dior. In the 70’s VALS Value and lifestyle segmentation was developed for commercial purposes in California in an attempt by SRI International to have a better understanding of consumer lifestyle.

Created to identify and group people accordingly so that they could predict consumer values and motivations to that they could target to the correct customers and make marketing attempts more efficient. Table 9. 4 page 400 Consumer Behaviour, Ray Wright By using the VALS table I would group the target reader of Glamour as achievers. Marketing and promotional content Glamour magazine has been available to buy as a paper copy since 1939 and in more recent years has become available digitally. The cost of buying a paper copy of Glamour is a fixed price of ? weekly, and is available in any large supermarket or book store, once a paper copy has been bought the reader can use the promotional certificate inside to get six copies at half price and get a free gift also. By accessing the Glamour website customers can avail of accounts based marketing, Glamour allow their readers to subscribe online which offers them business to customer savings and free gifts with their subscription, the process is simple, the reader only has to click on the subscription link and follow the direct debit instructions. Glamour is Britain’s No. women’s magazine, with circulatory figures for Glamour year ending 2009 were 515,281 according to Audit Bureau of Circulation Glamour’s promotional presence online is that on all the Conde Nast Publications, there is a footer throughout the websites which gives the user links to all Conde Nast publications and all of their brands, for example the footer is placed on all Conde Nast websites making Glamour Magazine accessible from other websites such as Vogue and GQ. The footer also offers the reader the option of contacting the magazine in numerous languages including Polish, Spanish, French and German.

Product strategy It is crucial that all elements of the product strategy complement each other, by ensuring the right mix of product, pricing strategy, promotion and place, will determine the success of the good/service. Identifying the need for the product is the basis, the pricing strategy must be realistic and meet the needs of the target market, Glamour has a set weekly price of ? 2 for their magazine, and the average cost of a magazine is between 50p and ? 4 making Glamour priced at middle of the range.

The promotional element of Glamour’s magazine is done with the use of A list celebrities on the front cover, fashion icons and idols, selling provocative images and the colours that make the magazine stand out amongst others, alongside the online promotion that Conde Nast Publications offer to all their brands using the medium of each brands individual website. The product must be placed where the targeted consumer will be able to access it easily; Glamour is sold through Newsagents, book stores, supermarkets and through pre paid subscriptions. The importance of consumer behaviour

It is important that a company understands consumer behaviour, it could be the difference between the success or failure of a marketing strategy, if the wrong customers are targeted the efforts will be ineffective and a waste of resources. By appreciating the importance of consumer behaviour marketers will be able to predict better the trends of the consumers and change their products or services to meet the ever changing customer wants and demands. One way of understanding better consumer behaviour is using loyalty cards to track what the consumer is buying and when they buy.

Consumer behaviour theories are crucially important to companies as they help understand Psychology of consumers like Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy of needs of individuals helps outline the basics of psychological need, which therefore helps to market products better and adapt marketing campaigns appropriately. Issues that may influence consumer behaviour may include ethical, or social changes, like the discovery of child labour issues or fur versus fake fur, are consumers as willing to buy if they know issues such as this.

According to Dragon International (1991), and the Cone and Roper study (Simon, 1995) consumers are interested in ethical behaviour beyond those issues that directly impact on them, and would be more discriminating in their purchases if they were given more information about ethically and socially responsible activities. Future trends Future trends that I would predict for the magazine industry is that the decline in circulatory figures will continue, with the presence of the internet becoming stronger and the people trying to become more environmentally friendly.

According to ONS, 70% of homes in the UK now have internet access which is a rise of 28% since 2006. I predict that many of Glamour’s readers will switch from their hard copy and move onto reading their favourite articles online, whilst on the go from mobile devices, although I don’t believe that the digital copy will be the only copy available, hard copies may become fewer and more expensive, as some readers will still enjoy the smell and touch of a paper magazine. Internet Access 0% of households had access in 2009 Office of national statistics draw:frame Conclusion In conclusion, having analysed Glamour magazine I have found that the reader is being targeted with an enormous amount of advertising content, over half the magazine is adverts for premium products which appear in all Glamour issues only changing moderately, eventually leaving these advertisements unnoticeable. Throughout the magazine there is very little editorial content of which has very little content or depth, the reader is mostly purchasing advertisements.

This magazine already has a strong online presence of which I believe will only get stronger following their downturn in psychical sales. Bibliography Books Foxall, Gordon R. APA vs. MLA: What Style Guide Do I Use?

    Introduction

APA versus MLA: what style guide do you use?

    APA

The American Psychological Association (APA) style is, originally, a set of rules that authors use when submitting papers for publications in the journals of the APA. Established in 1929, the style has since been used to guide research writers and help them achieve – through the use of established standards for language, the construction of correct reference citations, the avoidance of plagiarism, the proper use of headers, among many others – “minimum distraction and maximum precision”.

As a complete style and guideline for writing, the APA is a valuable tool for writing scientific papers, laboratory reports, and papers covering topics in the field of psychology, education, and other social sciences. The APA style allows for in-text citations, direct quotations, and endnotes and footnotes. It is also enables the author to use the past tense of verbs in the reportage.

Standards of the APA style include:

    • Bibliographic list of references

    • Alphabetical order by author in the bibliographic list, then chronological by work

    • Referenced authors organized in the bibliographic list by last name, first initial, then middle initial

    • Italicized titles of periodicals listed in the bibliography, with the words of the title capitalized

    • Titles of books capitalized according to “sentence-style” capitalization

    • In-text citations in parenthesis, with the author’s last name, year of publication, and page number included (Smith, 1988. p. 4)

    • Double-spaced lines

    • Page numbers – plus the shortened title of the work – placed in the upper right of every page

    • Title centered an inch below the top of the page

    • Double-spaced footnotes / endnotes, used sparingly for non-crucial information, and which are subscripted with a number that relates to the footnote

    MLA

The Modern Language Association (MLA) style is the leading style of documentation for literary research, as well as academic papers in the humanities field. It follows a specific set of rules for formatting manuscripts, and is considered, along with the APA style, a standardized reference format in college. Compared to the APA style, however, the MLA style focuses on the citation of books, anthologies, literary works, audio-visual material, multimedia, and similar works with much more detail.

Also, unlike the APA style, the present tense of verbs is most commonly used in the MLA style. Other MLA standards include:

    • Bibliographic list of works cited

    • Alphabetical order by author in the bibliographic list, then alphabetical by work

    • Centered titles an inch below the tops of the page

    • Referenced authors / names organized in the bibliographic list by last name, first name, then middle initial

    • In-text citations in parenthesis, with only the author’s last name and page number included (Smith 4)

    • Double-spaced lines, but with no extra line breaks between each citation

    • Footnotes (superscripted) also used to provide non-essential information

    Which style do I use?

Humanities courses are usually asked to style according to MLA guidelines. Students in science and research fields, meanwhile, are often encouraged to follow the APA guidelines. In college, the primary reason for using a standardized reference format like the MLA or APA is so that professional peers, researchers, professors, and other academic readers can easily understand the syntax and easily check the citations.

    APA Paper Formatting

APA Paper Formatting & Style Guidelines
Your teacher may want you to format your paper using APA guidelines. If you were told to create your citations in APA format, your paper should be formatted using the APA guidelines as well.

    General guidelines:

    1. Use white 8 ½  x 11” paper.
    2. Make 1 inch margins on the top, bottom, and sides
    3. The first word in every paragraph should be indented one half inch.
    4. APA recommends using Times New Roman font, size 12.
    5. Double space the entire research paper
    6. Include a page header known as the “running head” at the top of every page. (To make this process easier, set your word processor to automatically add these components onto each page)
      1. To create the running head/page header, insert page numbers justified to the right-hand side of the paper (do not put p. or pg. in front of page numbers)
      2. Then type “TITLE OF YOUR PAPER” justified to the left using all capital letters
      3. If your title is long, this running head title should be a shortened version of the title of your entire paper

    Sample running head/page header

    apaheaderyo

    APA Paper Components

Your essay should include these four major sections:

    1. Title Page
    2. Abstract
    3. Main Body
    4. References

    Title Page

This page should contain four pieces: the title of the paper, running head, the author’s name, institutional affiliation, and an author’s note. Create the page header/running head as described above.

*Please note that only on the title page, your page header/running head should include the words “Running Head” before your title in all capitals. The rest of the pages should not include this in the page header. It should look like this on the title page:

    aparunninghead

    • The title of the paper should capture the main idea of the essay but should not contain abbreviations or words that serve no purpose
    • It should be centered on the page and typed in 12-point Times New Roman font. Do not underline, bold, or italicize the title.

    1. Your title may take up one or two lines, but should not be more than 12 words in length.
    2. All text on the title page should be double-spaced in the same way as the rest of your essay
    3. Do not include any titles on the author’s name such as Dr. or Ms.
    4. The institutional affiliation is the location where the author conducted the research

    Sample Title page:

    apatitlepage3

    Abstract

On the following page, begin with the Running title.

    1. On the first line of the page, center the word “Abstract” (but do not include quotation marks).
    2. On the following line, write a summary of the key points of your research. Your abstract summary is a way to introduce readers to your research topic, the questions that will be answered, the process you took, and any findings or conclusions you drew.
    3. This summary should not be indented, but should be double-spaced and less than 250 words.
    4. If applicable, help researchers find your work in databases by listing keywords from your paper after your summary. To do this, indent and type Keywords: in italics.  Then list your keywords that stand out in your research.

    Sample Abstract page:

    apaabstractyo

    The Body

On the following page, begin with the Body of the paper.

    1. Start with the Running title
    2. On the next line write the title (do not bold, underline, or italicize the title)
    3. Begin with the introduction. Indent.
    4. The introduction presents the problem and premise upon which the research was based.  It goes into more detail about this problem than the abstract.
    5. Begin a new section with the Method. Bold and center this subtitle The Method section shows how the study was run and conducted. Be sure to describe the methods through which data was collected.
    6. Begin a new section with the Results. Bold and center this subtitle.  The Results section summarizes the data. Use graphs and graphs to display this data.
    7. Begin a new section with the Discussion. Bold and center this subtitle. This Discussion section is a chance to analyze and interpret your results.
      1. Draw conclusions and support how your data led to these conclusions.
      2. Discuss whether or not your hypothesis was confirmed or not supported by your results.
      3. Determine the limitations of the study and next steps to improve research for future studies.

** Throughout the body, in-text citations are used and include the author’s/authors’ name(s) and the publication year. In APA format page numbers are not used in in-text citations.

        Ex: (Wilkonson, 2009).

For more information about how to cite properly please see EasyBib’s guides for APA citations based on the sources you are using.

Population should be controlled for a number of reasons. Firstly, the resources are limited and are running out. Secondly, shortage of finances is a result. However, it is considered an unethical practice in some religions and abortion is strictly prohibited. Moreoever, it adds to the GDP as more is demanded consumed and produced. Beginning on this topic, first and foremost reason as to why population should be controlled is because natural resources are running out. Not everybody has access to these resources and the reason is ‘over population’. Let’s take water for e. g.

1/3rd of the people don’t have access to safe drinking water. Secondly, population should be controlled because it results in our people being even more illiterate. People who do not have the financial means to support a family should limit the amount of children they have because they’re not looked after, not well nourished and most importantly results in the infant mortality rate. In other words, too many people can harm the other people in every aspect because their needs will not be answered and looked upon. If the population is well controlled, everyone can maintain a certain standard of living.

Some argue that population growth is essential and generates income. As more people are born more will be demanded and purchased eventually. This results in the generation of incomes all over the world which is why some countries don’t restrict this practice. In addition to this, restricting the population is considered to be unethical according to some religions. Especially Islam and Christianity donot give the right to abortions and/or divorces. Hence it is very essential to control population in order for other people to receive resources.

If there is too much population, it will eventually result in harming everyone rather than benefiting them. It will cause a drastic change In the country’s economy and environment. In order to save our environment from destruction, population MUST be controlled in a sensible way. British broadcaster and naturalist Sir David Attenborough had once said: “Instead of controlling the environment for the benefit of the population, maybe we should control the population to ensure the survival of our environment”. Overpopulation and over consumption are therefore the root problems that need to be looked after.

    Essay Writing Guide

The LSAT Writing Sample asks you to write an essay in 35 minutes. It is wise to invest a few hours in preparation for your essay. Those who don’t prepare at all often write terrible essays. These essays might even be bad enough to endanger a student’s admission chances. Spend a few hours looking at sample essays to avoid any unnecessary mistakes.

The essay section is designed to test how well you can (1) organize a compelling argument using sound reasoning and supporting evidence and (2) express your thoughts clearly in written form. The essay section is NOT meant to test how many big vocabulary words you know, how much you know about the law or any other specific topic, or really even how creative you are.

    What will the topic be?

You won’t be asked to write about a specific topic so much as you’ll be asked to respond to a specific scenario. The scenario will always be presented in the same form. Here’s a watered-down example (keep in mind that the scenario on your exam will be more involved):

John wants to buy a pet. He is choosing between a cat and a dog. He only has time to care for one pet. Write an essay in which you argue for the purchase of one type of pet over the other based on the following considerations:

    • John wants a pet that will be relatively maintenance-free.
    • John wants a pet that will be a true, loyal companion.

The first option, the cat, is a clean pet that does not typically damage or destroy household property. While the cat does need to be fed twice per day, it does not need to be taken for daily walks. The cat is very aloof and non-responsive to human interaction, but it does grow attached to its human owner over time.

The second option, the dog, requires daily attention. The dog has been known to damage household property, and it requires walks on a daily basis. With training, the dog can learn to be relatively self-sufficient. The dog responds to human interaction and craves the attention of its human owner, but it can’t communicate very well with humans.

As mentioned earlier, the scenario will always be presented in the same way. The first part will present a choice, the second part (the bullet statements) will present two considerations that need to be weighed in making that choice, and the third part will provide more information about the two choices at hand. Notice that there is no right or wrong answer here. In fact, the scenario is presented in such a way as to make it difficult to decide which option is better! They both have their pros and cons. What’s important is NOT which option you choose, but rather how you justify, or support, the choice that you do end up making.

How should I write my essay?

The following will outline a process for planning and writing your essay. It certainly isn’t the only way to do it, but it does provide a consistent, repeatable approach that you’ll be able to rely on.

Step 1: Compile information in grid form (5 minutes total for steps 1-3)

In the test booklet, set up a table that has the two choices along the top and the two considerations along the side. In the intersecting cells of the grid, include the appropriate pros and cons using a “+” before any pro and a “-“ before any con. For our example, it might look like this:

    CatDog
    Relatively Maintenance-Free+ clean
    + doesn’t destroy property
    + no walks
    – needs food twice per day
    – daily attention
    – damages property
    – daily walks
+ can learn to be relatively self-sufficient
True, Loyal Companion– aloof and non-responsive
+ becomes attached to human owner
    + responds to humans
    + craves human attention
    – can’t communicate well

You’re familiar with cats and dogs, so it’s probably already obvious to you that a cat would be a good low-maintenance choice and a dog would be good for companionship. Keep in mind, however, that the scenario you will see on your exam will be much less familiar to you. Organizing the information in grid form will make it much easier for you to see the relative strengths and weaknesses of each choice.

Step 2: Decide on a “more important” consideration (5 minutes total for steps 1-3)

At this point, you want to make a decision. Is it more important for John that the pet be maintenance-free or that it be a loyal companion? Again, there’s no right answer. Even so, you need to decide which you will make more important. Choose one that you can easily justify (even if it’s a made-up justification). For example, we’ll decide:

“Having a loyal companion is more important than having a low-maintenance pet because true friendship trumps all else. If John has a true companion and friend, the daily maintenance will become a labor of love instead of a hassle.”

Step 3: Make your choice! (5 minutes total for steps 1-3)

Your decision in step 2 should lead you to a clear choice. In this case, if we deem companionship to be the more important consideration, then we’ll want to choose the dog (since the dog clearly has more compelling plusses in that part of the grid).

“John should pick the dog because it will serve as a more loyal companion than the cat will.”

Step 4: Write the essay (25 minutes)

Plan on structuring your essay the same way every time. Here’s an easy template to follow:

    Essay Section Template

    Paragraph 1:

    A. Summarize the decision to be made. “The scenario presented above puts John in a position in which he will choose between purchasing a cat and purchasing a dog.”

    B. Acknowledge the complexity of the decision. “Given the considerations and characteristics of the choices at hand, this is a very difficult decision in that each choice has its merits.”

    C. State your opinion. “Even so, John would be better served by choosing the dog.”

    Paragraph 2:

    A. State why the primary consideration (the one you chose to be the primary consideration) is more important and how your choice satisfies this consideration. “First, it is more important to have a pet that serves as a loyal companion than it is to have a pet that is maintenance-free…” (justify this statement, even if it’s a made-up justification) or “The dog will be a loyal companion in that it will …” (use the information from the grid to show how)

    B. State why the other choice (cat) falls short in this regard. “The cat, on the other hand, is a poor match for anyone looking for a loyal pet …” (use the information from the grid to show how)

    Paragraph 3:

State how your choice still does an okay job with the secondary consideration. “Furthermore, while the dog isn’t an ideal choice for someone wanting a maintenance-free pet, it can learn to be relatively self-sufficient…” (use any other information from the grid to support this)

    Paragraph 4:

    Summarize your argument

    Step 5: Proofread! (5 minutes)

Spelling errors, misprints, grammatical errors, etc. will never go over well. While a few simple mistakes won’t kill you, you want to be sure your final essay is as clean as possible.

Practice this a few times on some real essay prompts and you should be all set. Good luck!

    General Essay Writing Tips

Despite the fact that, as Shakespeare said, “the pen is mightier than the sword,” the pen itself is not enough to
make an effective writer. In fact, though we may all like to think of ourselves as the next Shakespeare, inspiration
alone is not the key to effective essay writing. You see, the conventions of English essays are more formulaic than
you might think – and, in many ways, it can be as simple as counting to five.

    The Five Paragraph Essay

Though more advanced academic papers are a category all their own, the basic high school or college essay has the
    following standardized, five paragraph structure:

    Paragraph 1: Introduction
    Paragraph 2: Body 1
    Paragraph 3: Body 2
    Paragraph 4: Body 3
    Paragraph
    5: Conclusion

Though it may seem formulaic – and, well, it is – the idea behind this structure is to make it easier for the reader
to navigate the ideas put forth in an essay. You see, if your essay has the same structure as every other one, any
reader should be able to quickly and easily find the information most relevant to them.

    The Introduction

    Want to see sample essays?

    our Sample Essay section where
you can see scholarship essays, admissions essays, and more!

The principle purpose of the introduction is to present your position (this is also known as the “thesis” or
“argument”) on the issue at hand but effective introductory paragraphs are so much more than that. Before you even
get to this thesis statement, for example, the essay should begin with a “hook” that grabs the reader’s attention
and makes them want to read on. Examples of effective hooks include relevant quotations (“no man is an island”) or
surprising statistics (“three out of four doctors report that…”).

Only then, with the reader’s attention “hooked,” should you move on to the thesis. The thesis should be a clear,
one-sentence explanation of your position that leaves no doubt in the reader’s mind about which side you are on from
    the beginning of your essay.

Following the thesis, you should provide a mini-outline which previews the examples you will use to support your
thesis in the rest of the essay. Not only does this tell the reader what to expect in the paragraphs to come but it
also gives them a clearer understanding of what the essay is about.

Finally, designing the last sentence in this way has the added benefit of seamlessly moving the reader to the first
paragraph of the body of the paper. In this way we can see that the basic introduction does not need to be much more
than three or four sentences in length. If yours is much longer you might want to consider editing it down a bit!

Here, by way of example, is an introductory paragraph to an essay in response to the following question:

“Do we learn more from finding out that we have made mistakes or from our successful actions?”

“No man is an island” and, as such, he is constantly shaped and influenced by his experiences. People learn by doing
and, accordingly, learn considerably more from their mistakes than their success. For proof of this, consider
examples from both science and everyday experience.

DO – Pay Attention to Your Introductory Paragraph

Because this is the first paragraph of your essay it is your opportunity to give the reader the best first
impression possible. The introductory paragraph not only gives the reader an idea of what you will talk
about but also shows them how you will talk about it. Put a disproportionate amount of effort into this –
more than the 20% a simple calculation would suggest – and you will be rewarded accordingly.

DO NOT – Use Passive Voice or I/My

Active voice, wherein the subjects direct actions rather than let the actions “happen to” them – “he scored
a 97%” instead of “he was given a 97%” – is a much more powerful and attention-grabbing way to write. At the
same time, unless it is a personal narrative, avoid personal pronouns like I, My, or Me. Try instead to be
more general and you will have your reader hooked.

    The Body Paragraphs

The middle paragraphs of the essay are collectively known as the body paragraphs and, as alluded to above, the main
purpose of a body paragraph is to spell out in detail the examples that support your thesis.

For the first body paragraph you should use your strongest argument or most significant example unless some other
more obvious beginning point (as in the case of chronological explanations) is required. The first sentence of this
paragraph should be the topic sentence of the paragraph that directly relates to the examples listed in the
    mini-outline of introductory paragraph.

A one sentence body paragraph that simply cites the example of “George Washington” or “LeBron James” is not enough,
however. No, following this an effective essay will follow up on this topic sentence by explaining to the reader, in
detail, who or what an example is and, more importantly, why that example is relevant.

Even the most famous examples need context. For example, George Washington’s life was extremely complex – by using
him as an example, do you intend to refer to his honesty, bravery, or maybe even his wooden teeth? The reader needs
to know this and it is your job as the writer to paint the appropriate picture for them. To do this, it is a good
idea to provide the reader with five or six relevant facts about the life (in general) or event (in particular) you
believe most clearly illustrates your point.

Having done that, you then need to explain exactly why
    this example proves your thesis
. The importance of this step cannot be understated (although it clearly can
be underlined); this is, after all, the whole reason you are providing the example in the first place. Seal
the deal by directly stating why this example is relevant.

Here is an example of a body paragraph to continue the essay begun above:

Take, by way of example, Thomas Edison. The famed American inventor rose to prominence in the late 19th century
because of his successes, yes, but even he felt that these successes were the result of his many failures. He did
not succeed in his work on one of his most famous inventions, the lightbulb, on his first try nor even on his
hundred and first try. In fact, it took him more than 1,000 attempts to make the first incandescent bulb but, along
the way, he learned quite a deal. As he himself said, “I did not fail a thousand times but instead succeeded in
finding a thousand ways it would not work.” Thus Edison demonstrated both in thought and action how instructive
    mistakes can be.

    DO – Tie Things Together

The first sentence – the topic sentence – of your body paragraphs needs to have a lot individual pieces to
be truly effective. Not only should it open with a transition that signals the change from one idea to the
next but also it should (ideally) also have a common thread which ties all of the body paragraphs together.
For example, if you used “first” in the first body paragraph then you should used “secondly” in the second
or “on the one hand” and “on the other hand” accordingly.

DO NOT – Be Too General

Examples should be relevant to the thesis and so should the explanatory details you provide for them. It can
be hard to summarize the full richness of a given example in just a few lines so make them count. If you are
trying to explain why George Washington is a great example of a strong leader, for instance, his childhood
adventure with the cherry tree (though interesting in another essay) should probably be skipped over.

    A Word on Transitions

You may have noticed that, though the above paragraph aligns pretty closely with the provided outline, there is one
large exception: the first few words. These words are example of a transitional phrase – others include
“furthermore,” “moreover,” but also “by contrast” and “on the other hand” – and are the hallmark of good writing.

Transitional phrases are useful for showing the reader where one section ends and another begins. It may be helpful
to see them as the written equivalent of the kinds of spoken cues used in formal speeches that signal the end of one
set of ideas and the beginning of another. In essence, they lead the reader from one section of the paragraph of
    another.

To further illustrate this, consider the second body paragraph of our example essay:

In a similar way, we are all like Edison in our own way. Whenever we learn a new skill – be it riding a bike,
driving a car, or cooking a cake – we learn from our mistakes. Few, if any, are ready to go from training wheels to
a marathon in a single day but these early experiences (these so-called mistakes) can help us improve our
performance over time. You cannot make a cake without breaking a few eggs and, likewise, we learn by doing and doing
    inevitably means making mistakes.

Hopefully this example not only provides another example of an effective body paragraph but also illustrates how
transitional phrases can be used to distinguish between them.

    The Conclusion

Although the conclusion paragraph comes at the end of your essay it should not be seen as an afterthought. As the
final paragraph is represents your last chance to make your case and, as such, should follow an extremely rigid
    format.

One way to think of the conclusion is, paradoxically, as a second introduction because it does in fact contain many
of the same features. While it does not need to be too long – four well-crafted sentence should be enough – it can
    make or break and essay.

Effective conclusions open with a concluding transition (“in conclusion,” “in the end,” etc.) and an allusion to the
“hook” used in the introductory paragraph. After that you should immediately provide a restatement of your thesis
    statement.

This should be the fourth or fifth time you have repeated your thesis so while you should use a variety of word
choice in the body paragraphs it is a acceptable idea to use some (but not all) of the original language you used in
the introduction. This echoing effect not only reinforces your argument but also ties it nicely to the second key
element of the conclusion: a brief (two or three words is enough) review of the three main points from the body of
    the paper.

Having done all of that, the final element – and final sentence in your essay – should be a “global statement” or
“call to action” that gives the reader signals that the discussion has come to an end.

In the end, then, one thing is clear: mistakes do far more to help us learn and improve than successes. As examples
from both science and everyday experience can attest, if we treat each mistake not as a misstep but as a learning
experience the possibilities for self-improvement are limitless.

    DO – Be Powerful

The conclusion paragraph can be a difficult paragraph to write effectively but, as it is your last chance to
convince or otherwise impress the reader, it is worth investing some time in. Take this opportunity to
restate your thesis with confidence; if you present your argument as “obvious” then the reader might just do
    the same.

DO NOT – Copy the First Paragraph

Although you can reuse the same key words in the conclusion as you did in the introduction, try not to copy
whole phrases word for word. Instead, try to use this last paragraph to really show your skills as a writer
by being as artful in your rephrasing as possible.

Taken together, then, the overall structure of a five paragraph essay should look something like this:

    Introduction Paragraph

    • An attention-grabbing “hook”
    • A thesis statement
    • A preview of the three subtopics you will discuss in the body paragraphs.

    First Body Paragraph

    • Topic sentence which states the first subtopic and opens with a transition
    • Supporting details or examples
    • An explanation of how this example proves your thesis

    Second Body Paragraph

    • Topic sentence which states the second subtopic and opens with a transition
    • Supporting details or examples
    • An explanation of how this example proves your thesis

    Third Body Paragraph

    • Topic sentence which states the third subtopic and opens with a transition
    • Supporting details or examples
    • An explanation of how this example proves your thesis

    Concluding Paragraph

    • Concluding Transition, Reverse “hook,” and restatement of thesis.
    • Rephrasing main topic and subtopics.
    • Global statement or call to action.

More tips to make your essay shine

    Planning Pays

Although it may seem like a waste of time – especially during exams where time is tight – it is almost always better to brainstorm a bit before beginning your essay. This should enable
you to find the best supporting ideas – rather than simply the first ones that come to mind – and position them in
    your essay accordingly.

Your best supporting idea – the one that most strongly makes your case and, simultaneously, about which you have the
most knowledge – should go first. Even the best-written essays can fail because of ineffectively placed arguments.

    Aim for Variety

Sentences and vocabulary of varying complexity are one of the hallmarks of effective writing. When you are writing,
try to avoid using the same words and phrases over and over again. You don’t have to be a walking thesaurus but a
little variance can make the same idea sparkle.

If you are asked about “money,” you could try “wealth” or “riches.” At the same time, avoid beginning sentences the
dull pattern of “subject + verb + direct object.” Although examples of this are harder to give, consider our writing
throughout this article as one big example of sentence structure variety.

    Practice! Practice! Practice!

In the end, though, remember that good writing does not happen by accident. Although we have endeavored to explain
everything that goes into effective essay writing in as clear and concise a way as possible, it is much easier in
theory than it is in practice.

As a result, we recommend that you practice writing sample essays on various topics. Even if they are not
masterpieces at first, a bit of regular practice will soon change that – and make you better prepared when it comes
    to the real thing.

Essay on Legalizing Marijuana: A Dangerous Drug or a Powerful Cure?

    7 August, 2015
    , by Jane Copland

cannabis (marijuna) lawLegalization of cannabis has been a very controversial issue in the United States for a long time; even more so after several states have already passed the legislation lifting the ban. Should all marijuana be legal? Is it dangerous? What are the possible implications of this? It is one of these topics that people just cannot help but have diametrically opposite viewpoints on.

For decades marijuana was considered to be a dangerous drug, leading to criminal behavior and personal degradation. However, by now most of these beliefs have been discredited – there is little to no proof that cannabis in and of itself has any adverse effects. Some studies even show that it is far less dangerous than many completely legal prescription drugs – both for its users and those around them.

In addition to that, there is corroborative proof of marijuana’s positive medical effects. Cannabis is beneficial for epilepsy patients, it eases nausea caused by chemotherapy and shows good results when used by people suffering from AIDS, glaucoma, multiple sclerosis and a number of other conditions. In other words, legalization of cannabis can greatly improve the quality of life of all these people, while proof of its lasting or even temporary adverse effects remains more than scarce.

But even if we take medical use of cannabis aside, let’s ask ourselves a simple question: the war on drugs has been raging for decades, billions of government spending have been poured down this sinkhole, hundreds of thousands of people were convicted on drug charges, tens of thousands are getting killed in drug wars in Mexico and South America – yet the results are less than nil.

Drug trade is running rampant, tens of thousands die in drug-related shootings and gang warfare, prisons are overfilled with people charged with possession or selling drugs (and a large percentage of them has been arrested over finding a tiny amount of marijuana on them), time in prison makes it difficult for these people to find proper jobs later on, again pushing them towards criminal activities, thousands of addicts die due to overdose.

It seems that Prohibition era should have taught us that criminalizing an activity doesn’t make it disappear – it simply procreates organized crime. Most narcotic drugs are relatively simple and cheap in production – their high prices are caused by their illegal status and dangers accompanying producing and selling them. The war on drugs is exactly what causes drug mafia to exist in the first place – and in the long run, losses from the war on drugs by far exceed any positive effects it may have.

That is the prime reason to legalize marijuana and, ideally, drugs in general. It is impossible to eliminate them. It is impossible to protect people from themselves. If somebody wants to follow his or her self-destructive tendencies, it is not the state’s job to be his or her nanny. If drugs are legalized and cheap, a drug addict is very unlikely to harm anybody but himself – and we should take into account a greatly diminished risk of overdose, infection and other dangers accompanying illicit drugs.
