What is a reflective essay (essay definition)

A reflective essay is a paper that entails a writer to expound about their personal experience and relate to the audience appropriately through writing. The experience matters along with personal ideas, opinions and even feelings about the situation and how the situation affected the author or others. A reflective paper is usually self-centered in that a writer has to speak from the first point of view for the events under description.

Many students fail to understand the meaning of reflective essay and therefore cannot write a reflective paper template which is clear to examiners. A reflective paper is all about relating a current situation with some past events.  A reflection is creating of an image which shares attributes with the real object, same way to reflective writing, you are required to describe a past event and show the reader how it repeats itself later on. As an author there are some of the key points that you should have to yourself to come up with good content for your essay:

  1. You have to create a link between your writing, yourself and the surrounding. You have to mention to the reader how the three aspects relate to each other.
  2. Applying your senses is also necessary, as one has to explain what they have seen before, what they have heard and what they have read about the theme under discussion.
  3. Application of the knowledge acquired. To come up with a good reflection essay the writer has to know how to apply the knowledge they have acquired in class with the real world.
  4. You should write the text in first person narration because a reflective essay is more subjective to the writer and therefore the events should have happened in their lives in one way or another. It’s more of a testimony narration.

Many examiners at different levels of education usually involve the students in writing of reflective papers because it helps them to reflect on what they study and its application in the real world. Some of the important characteristics of reflective writing include:

– It helps students reflect on the lectures that they have been taught in class and apply it in the real world. Learning about a concept is one thing and applying it is another thing, so it is good for students to develop a mindset where they can understand how to go about when it comes to the real application of the concepts they learn in class.

– It improves the creativity of the students – for you to reflect what you have studied and applied you have to be creative because in most cases things are usually not straight as they are in class, there is some creativity needed.

– It helps is keeping records – learning about a concept is not enough, you have to reflect on it so that you can remember it lest it gets out of your mind.

Tips on how to start a reflective paper

How you start your essay is the determiner of whether you are going to come up with a great essay or not. Before you start your paper, you have to organize the points following the procedures below:

  • Identify the main themes – you should be able to jot down the main themes on the topic that you are to write on. A good idea of encrypting the same is by writing them in form of topic sentences, so that they can be clear and to the point.
  • Reflect the topic with a material that you have in your mind – a reflection essay is all about comparison of two similar ordeals, so as a writer you should be able to figure out a material that reflects on the topic under discussion. It is in this section that you should also think of your personal experiences that goes hand in hand with what you are talking about in the essay. While narrating your experience be sure to constitute sense so as to improve on reality of events in the story.
  • Table things out – you can classify your points and experience in tabular form whereby in the first section, you can mention the main points in a column or row depending on your preference. In the second section, put down your personal experience about the ideas written in the first section, be sure to include your feelings, beliefs and even cultural influences in the points. In the last part, you should give your response about how your culture, feelings, and emotions affect the whole situation.

At last, you should ask yourself the question to act as a guide in the presentation of your response to the reader. Some of the common questions that you should engage your mind include: how does the situation affect your thinking? Does the experience challenge you in any way; physically, emotionally or socially? Was there anything left out for those involved in the experience, if yes mention it out as your response. You also have to bring out how the events link with your experience, this is now bringing out the reflection aspect in the paper hence attaining the objective of the paper.

How to design a reflective paper format

Every essay paper has a specific format depending on the instructions given by the examiner. A reflective paper can adopt different formats depending on the targeted audience. The main objective of any reflective essay is usually to relate one’s life experience with a certain topic, hence reflection; as a writer, you should also recount lessons that made you change. The common form used for presentation of a reflective paper is usually the diary format. In diary format, you have to narrate your thoughts in such a way that one occurrence results in another. A reflective essay may take different formats depending on the audience.

A reflective essay may be academic in the aspect that a student may be asked to write a lesson learnt in class and reflect its application in real life. The second instance is the informal format where a story may be narrated in a piece of an article or magazine, and the aspect of reflection brought out about the society regarding leadership. The main formats that one may be asked to write about are:

  • After presenting the feelings, you should evaluate – when you evaluate a story or experience, you should mention it to the reader whether the situation was good or bad. It is more of giving judgement to the situation.
  • The analysis comes after evaluation – you should be able to give your opinion concerning the situation after evaluating the experience.

An introduction should be a brief description or background story about the topic under discussion. In your description, be certain to hook your reader in the introduction. The introduction should be attractive to attract the reader towards the body of your essay. There are many ways to attract the attention of the reader and make them anticipate for the body; you can apply all form of suspense.

To create suspense in the introduction, you can bring on questions that have no answers and direct the reader to find the answers below. You can also choose to portray the interesting part of your story in the introduction on a light note so that the reader can be attracted to find out more about the story in the body. You should include a small thesis statement at the end of your introduction. A thesis statement is a simple statement that summarizes what the essay is to cover or focus. Since it is a reflective essay, your thesis should contain a small overview of your experience.

  1. The body

The body is the main part of your essay, and it is in the body where you are expected to bring out your ideas. In the body paragraphs, you should introduce your paragraphs with topic sentences. The main objective of the topic sentence is to introduce the idea to the reader. After introducing the idea, you should support your idea by giving relevant reflections.

When you start your conclusion let the reader know that you are coming to an end of your essay by using good transition words for a conclusion, such as ‘finally.’ In conclusion, you should write a summary of the main points in the body. You should also show how the experiences have changed your behavior and feelings about different aspects of the society. You can also give recommendations on how to handle different situations. Before science, psychology was untested. People assumed all psychological problems were caused by evil spirits. The roots of psychology go back to the ancient Greeks, the term itself comes from two Greek words, “psyche” and “logos” which means the soul and the study of a subject. Philosophy and physiology both contributed to psychology’s emergence as a scientific discipline.

The formal beginning of psychology started in the mid 18th century when a German physiologist named Wilhelm Wundt treated psychology as an independent science discipline. His book “Principles of Physiological Psychology” was published in 1874, it focused on consciousness, including feelings, emotions and ideas. His perspective came to be known as “structuralism” – psychology is to analyze consciousness into its basic elements and investigate how they are related. Wundt and others also used a procedure called “introspection”- a self- examination of one’s conscious thoughts and feelings. However, by 1895 structuralism was replaced by “functionalism”- it focused on the acts and functions of the mind and behavior rather than its structure.

In 1924, John B Watson published “Psychology as Behavior” launched “behaviorism” which proposed that psychology should study only observable behavior. Sigmund Freud, an Austrian physician, whose work and theories helped shape the views of childhood, personality, memory, sexuality and therapy which attempted to explain motivation and mental disorders.

Another change of psychology happened when “humanism” rose; its theoretical perspective emphasized conscious experiences. One of the founders of this theory, Carl Rogers strongly believed in the power of free will and human’s potential to grow.

Psychology continued to grow, more new ideas and perspectives were introduced. Psychology evolved out from philosophy and physiology to a separate and independent field of study with further development and theories to explain human thought and behavior throughout centuries. Today, psychologists focus on a particular specialty or perspective but their ideas and theories will continue to shape psychology for years to come.

Is Psychology a Science?

– The British Psychological Society states that ‘Psychology is the scientific study of people, the mind and behaviour’ (BPS). In this essay I will be discussing what is actually meant by this and whether psychology fits into both the traditional views of a science, as well as more contemporary perspectives. It is widely suggested that Psychology is a “coalition of specialities” meaning it is multi-disciplinary (Hewstone, Fincham and Foster 2005, page 4). I will therefore examine whether it could be considered wrong to think that all parts of the discipline should neatly fit into one view of a scientific approach….   [tags: Psychology ]

The Psychology of Religion

– The Psychology of Religion is composed of a variety of different perspectives, which in certain cases proves difficult in determining both the clinical and pastoral implications of a theory. Modern-day psychology has demonstrated possible beneficial results in religious spiritual individuals, however, much of the current research has avoided questioning the “real” presence of the Divine or a Higher Being. Although a century has passed since his undertaking of psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud readily settled the question of religion by declaring it a form of mental illness….   [tags: Psychology ]

During its inception and much of its history, deliberation over how psychology should be defined and what it should encompass filled most of the scholarly printings and closed-door discussions. After, police discovered the mother’s motive, her children were being “mouthy” with her all the time. When stories, such as this one, pop up in the media about murders and homicides, does one wonder if the brain plays a major role in individuals’ killings. Or just how the brain works in general. How does the brain tie in with criminal law….   [tags: Criminological Psychology]

The Best Boston Metro Executive MBA Programs

      by: John A. Byrne on January 19, 2012 | 11 Comments 28,198 Views

Boston University’s School of Management boasts the highest ranked EMBA program in New England

When it comes to the MBA degree and Boston, Harvard Business School hogs a lot of the attention. But Harvard isn’t the only game in town. In fact, when it comes to the executive MBA degree, Harvard isn’t even in the game, never having offerred an EMBA program.

Instead, Boston area managers and executives have nearly a dozen solid degree-granting programs from which to choose. Among them are programs that blend online learning with classroom instruction, feature week-long residencies and international study excursions, boast classes taught by multiple professors from different disciplines, and throw challenging capstone projects at teams of students. Some of these programs start in January of every year; others in March, September, and October.

All told, it’s a nicely varied array of MBA options for managers who don’t want the burden of having to travel hundreds of miles every other weekend to get an MBA in either New York, Philadelphia or even further away.

Babson College , known for its entrepreneurial focus, has two options: a “Fast Track” MBA and a more traditional evening MBA program. The 21-month Fast Track program combines 14 face-to-face sessions that meet every seven weeks for two and one-half days (Thursday afternoon through Saturday) and more regular web-based sessions.

Boston University , which boasts the highest ranked EMBA program in downtown Boston, has an 18-month program taught in classes that meet on alternating Fridays and Saturdays at BU’s School of Management in Kenmore Square. The program also features four residential weeks, including an international study excursion that has recently brought students to China, Vietnam and Turkey.

MIT Sloan , one of the world’s best universities, enrolled its very first class of EMBA candidates in October of 2010. The inaugural group of some 70 students meet just about every three weeks for 26 Friday-Saturday sessions as well as four eight-day, on-campus learning modules. Students will also participate in a week-long action learning course – Global Organizations Lab (GO-Lab) – during which students work on a team-based consulting project with an international company.

Another interesting option is the relatively new partnership program between Cornell University in Ithaca and Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. The Cornell-Queens program is delivered in nearby Salem, N.H., about a 45-to-60 minute drive from Boston over three Saturdays every month via videoconferencing. There’s also three residential sessions of seven to 15 days in length during the 16-month program. For a program largely delivered via videoconferencing, however, it’s not cheap: the $106,890 price tag makes it the second most expensive option in the Boston metro area.

How do these programs stack up against each other?

      • The rankings leader in the market might very well surprise you. It’s the Cornell-Queen’s partnership program which PoetsandQuants currently ranks at 32nd in the world. What about MIT? It’s not yet ranked because the program, which took in its first class in October of 2010, has yet to graduate a class.
      • The most expensive program in the market is MIT’s EMBA with a total tuition cost of $141,000, a sum that does not include the cost of overnight accomodations.
      • The least expensive? Bentley College’s McCallum Graduate School of Business’ $58,596 Executive MBA which can be taken either on-campus or online.
      • Northeastern University and the Cornell-Queen’s partnership program are the shortest options, allowing students to get an Executive MBA degree in just 16 months.
      • The most experienced managers and the oldest are enrolled in Suffolk University’s EMBA program. The average age of a incoming student there is an unusually high 40 with 18 years of work experience.
      • The youngest students are in Babson’s “fast track” program where the average participant comes with just eight years of work experience.
      • MIT has the largest contingent of international students–39% in the latest entering class, though only 5% in its program actually travel to the program from other countries.
      • Northeastern’s EMBA program has the highest concentration of women with 43% of the latest entering class female.
      • MIT says it is the most selective program in the area and among the most selective of EMBA programs in the world. With an acceptance rate of 25%, it certainly is.

How To Write A High School Entrance Essay

Many people believe that high school entrance essays are relatively easier to write than college entrance essays, which is the reason why there are fewer places where you can get assistance with high school entrance essays. Nonetheless, they are all equally as important hence you need to make sure that you make no mistake when writing.

Although many students and teachers alike take high school entrance essays for granted, they form a very important background to the child’s education. Public high schools have their own fair share of problems and if the student is not careful, they may end up in a very big mess. This is the reason why many parents have opted to take their children to private high schools. In most private schools, short answer essays are required from the prospective students and their parents. Here are some of the important aspects of high school entrance essays.

      Questions to the Students

High school entrance essays are not very hard for the prospective students because they should already be conversant with answering essay questions. The following are the areas that are normally covered in these questions.

      • Academic strengths
      • Academic weaknesses
      • The student’s hobbies
      • The extra-curricular activities that the student engages in
      • The student’s desire to join the given school
      • What the student hopes to get from the school

      Questions to the Parents

Unlike the questions asked to the students, the questions that go to the parents are usually analytical. They try to make the parent comment on his/her child’s character and to give some background of the family in order for the directors to see how well you can support the school. They may not have the power to ask some of these things directly, but they will be in a position to accurately deduce depending on the answers that you will give.

A good example of a question that a parent may be asked is how the parent thinks his or her child will contribute to the school. An answer to this question should mention the child’s strengths, their athletic and social interests. If the parent has ever been to the school, a reference to the visit is encourages because it will show that they actually made an effort to learn about the school.

There are also questions that seek to evaluate any probable future financial assistance from the parent and the religious position of the parent.

MLA Formatting and MLA Style: An Introduction

MLA Formatting and MLA Style: An Introduction

MLA examples focusing on format and style

Your instructor has asked you to format your term paper using Modern Language Association (MLA) 1 style. You feel confident enough to produce the paper, but you have never heard of MLA style —do you panic or do you research MLA style and MLA formatting?

This article will explain MLA style, give examples of MLA formatting, and offer a list of tips that our editors have learned over the years. If you have a general understanding of what MLA style is and are just looking for examples of MLA citations , we can help with that too!

A simplistic definition of MLA format

MLA style is an accepted way to document source material for many types of humanities documents. It is simpler than some other style guides, such as the APA Style Guide or the Chicago Manual of Style , and has two basic requirements:

      1. Brief parenthetical citations in the text
      2. An alphabetical list of works cited that corresponds to the in-text citations and appears at the end of the research paper

In simple terms, you put a reference to your source material in parentheses in the text and you list all the sources to which you have referred in alphabetical order at the end of the paper.

Of course, there is so much more to MLA style and MLA formatting than just that. Indeed, the current version of The MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers 7th Edition runs to 292 pages! But here are the most commonly encountered style and formatting points.

      To emphasize or not?

Sometimes, it is appropriate to draw attention to particular words in your paper, but using italics for emphasis (He really ate a lot…) is inappropriate in research writing and inconsistent with MLA style. Generally, in MLA format, foreign words used in an English text are to be italicized, as are words and letters referred to as words and letters (He spelled argument with an e).

      MLA research paper format tips

Your instructor may issue particular instructions; if so, follow them. Otherwise, the following will help you set out your research paper in MLA style.

      • Use a clear typeface (Arial or Times New Roman) in a readable size (at least 11 point).
      • Justify the text to the left margin, leaving the right margin ragged.
      • Leave 1″ margins on the top, bottom, left, and right.
      • Indent the first word in a paragraph by 0.5″. Indent set-off quotations by 1″.
      • Use double spacing throughout.
      • Use single spaces after full stops, commas , exclamation marks, etc.
      • There is no need for a title page; at the top of the first page (1″ margin, flush left), type your name, your instructor’s name, the course number, and the date on separate, double-spaced lines.
      • The title of your research paper should then be centered on the first page. There is no need for it to be highlighted in bold or italics or for it to appear in capitals.
      • Page numbers appear in the top, right-hand corner with a 0.5″ margin from the top and with a flush right margin. It is good practice to include your last name before the page number in the event that pages go astray. Do not use the abbreviation p. before the page number or add any other mark or symbol. You may not need to include a page number on the front page—check with your instructor.

Good grammar, punctuation , and spelling are essential parts of your research paper. There is no room for basic typos at this level. Our advice is to check and check again, and don’t just rely on your word processor’s spell checker. Get a second pair of eyes to look over your paper; try our essay editors to ensure that MLA style is consistent throughout your paper and there are no grammatical errors.

      MLA Format in Detail

This page contains general guidelines on how to properly format the headings on a
      paper using MLA format.

      Without a Cover Page:

This is the most common way to begin an MLA essay because MLA does not require a cover
page. Some instructors, however, may require one (see instructions and example below).

      1. The Opening Page:
On the opening page or the first page, a comprehensive identification (sometimes
referred to as the main heading) and essay title should appear. The identification
      includes the following information:

      • Student/Author Name
      • Instructor’s Name
      • Class Name/Information
      • Your Paper’s Due Date

      • Font: choose an easy to read font such as Times New Roman
      • Font Size: set the font size to be 12 throughout the paper, including the paper’s title. Never
set the font size larger than 12.
      • Margins: 1-inch for top/bottom/right/left throughout the paper
      • Double-space: double-space throughout he paper. Don’t add extra spaces (besides the already used
double-spacing) between headings, title and/ paragraphs.  Important Note: In the newest Microsoft Word settings, adding extra spaces between paragraphs is a
default setting and must be disabled by the writer; otherwise, extra spaces will be
        automatically created.

      Sample of the opening page:

      With a Cover Page:

The Modern Language Association (MLA) does not require a cover page, but some instructors
may require it. In certain situations or assignments, a paper with a cover page can
      look more professional.

Instructors who require the paper to have a cover page usually provide specific instructions
on what should be included. Here is the general MLA Format cover page. This page should
include your school or university’s name (i.e. Aims Community College), a paper title,
author name, class name, professor name and paper due date.
Here is how to format an MLA cover page:

      • This page is double-spaced and the letters are centered.
      • Type the name of your university or college.
      • Skip to about one-third of the page and type the research paper title, including subtitle
        if there is one.
      • Skip several lines and type student/author name, course name and number, instructor
        name and paper due date.

      Sample MLA Format Cover Page:
      Sample MLA Format Cover Page

      Alternate First Page:

If an instructor requires a cover page, the identification heading on the first page
should be omitted. Below is an example of the first page if a cover page is used.
Last name and page number should appear on all pages, and the title should appear
at the top of the first page only.
Sample MLA Format First Page with Cover Page

      2. The Inner Pages:
For the pages that follow the first page, set the heading like this: instead of the
whole heading, use the header feature in the word-processing program to include author
      last name and page number.

      Inner Page Example:
Example of the heading for inner pages.

      3. The Works Cited Page:
Every research paper must include a works cited page(s).

      • The works cited list is placed at the end of the paper, beginning on a new page.
      • The header for the works cited page(s) should be similar to the header for the inner
pages, which includes author name and the page number at the top.
      • Enter the title as “Works Cited” and place this title 1-inch from the top of the page, see more details in the example illustration below.

Example of the works cited page:

Most forms of writing involve description. For example, in a Short Story characters and places need to be made real for the reader and clever description helps achieve this. In personal writing you create the effect you want by describing events, feelings and atmosphere.

      Describing a piece of text

In the Standard Grade Writing Exam some options use the word “describe” as the main instruction word. For example here is a question from the 1992 SQA paper:

Describe your special place and try to explain why it is special to you.

Some options in the exam give you the chance to concentrate on description and do a piece of Atmospheric Writing.

For example, here is a question from the 1997 SQA paper:

Choose one of the following and describe the scene which it brings to mind –

      ……..the harbours,Without a boat, the frozen mindsWithout a song.

      Norman MacCaig

For winter’s rains and suns are over,And all the season of snow and sins,And in the green underwood and coverBlossom by blossom the spring begins.

      Algernon Swinburne

Give me the splendid sunWith all his beams full dazzling.

      Conducting a literature review

You may be expected to gather evidence by making a review of the current literature, perhaps as a distinct section in an assignment or as a chapter of a dissertation. Or it may be part of your preparatory work for a project proposal.

A literature review usually takes the form of a critical discussion that shows insight into the theories being discussed in publications with a clear link to the purpose of your question or research.

The structure of the literature review depends on the aims and purpose of your work. Generally, you should group together your work in key themes, with each one explicitly linked to your research topic.

Beginning a literature review can be a bit overwhelming. The best place to start is with your textbooks and the key academics referred to within them. After you’ve identified the key relevant authors you can read more from them (books, articles etc). This will then lead you on further, to other academics and theories.

You can use the OU’s online library to source material that is available online. It has links to journals, articles, e-books and more.

Here are some key steps in conducting a literature review.

      • Define your topic. Do you have central question you want to answer?
      • Narrow down what you want to research – a narrower topic allows you to focus more deeply, rather than skimming the surface
      • Divide your topic into key themes to make it easier to look up information
      • Use your textbooks to identify key authors or theories that relate to the themes and make them your starting point
      • Do the textbooks suggest any further reading? If so, track it down
      • Use the OU’s online library to locate academic opinion and theory
      • Organise your literature: store any paper copies in folders and files, grouped into themes
      • Read the literature you have sourced
      • Fit the literature into the key themes you have identified – if any don’t fit, or they don’t seem important enough to include, put them to one side

You now need to engage critically with the texts. Think about whether you agree with what’s being said. Examine the methodology used: divide the articles into qualitative or quantitative categories, evaluate conclusions made based on the method used and evidence presented.

Once you start to collate your literature review, make sure to reference your sources correctly as you use them. Keep full details of the title of the paper or book chapter, the authors, the page numbers, the journal or book it was published in and year of publication, as it can be hard to track down these details later.

It is important that you keep up with your subject; people will be writing about it all the time, with new theories and literature produced. This means you should look over literature at other points too: certainly mid-way through a research project and again at the end.

Best One Year MBA Programs in the World

Best one-year MBA programs in the worldAccelerated MBA programs offered by even the best business schools are sometimes belittled as “quickie” degrees. However, all the bad press about these programs probably disappeared when The Financial Times released its 2016 list of global full-time MBA courses.

INSEAD’s one-year program topped the rankings, and there were as many as eight “quickies” in the top 15, most of them rated by experts as comparable with top global two-year programs.

Obviously, one-year full-time MBA programs are not the same thing as the traditional postgraduate management programs offered by IIM and the likes. But they are ideal for professionals who are budget-conscious, and don’t have much time for business fundamentals courses of the traditional course, since they may already have an undergraduate management education or significant amount of business exposure.

Many may even want to continue in the same industry after graduating. The best candidates for such courses tend to have more experience than the average full-time-MBA applicant.

What are the main disadvantages of the one-year MBA? Probably the loss of opportunity to do a summer internship (perhaps this should only bother those looking for a job or sector change) and fewer avenues for networking.

Here are brief sketches of some of the best global business schools offering short-duration MBA programs. All these schools figure in the top 50 of FT’s 2016 global MBA rankings. More European schools than U.S. schools appear in the list below since more top schools in the continent offer the shorter-duration MBA program than in the US.

As with most of our articles on the best programs, this is a representative (not comprehensive) list and not a ranking. For the full ranking refer to any of the popular MBA rankings.

It needs to be said that the inclusion in FT’s list of a good number of b-schools offering one-year programs and the better ranking given to some new schools above hoary institutions have drawn the criticism of some management education experts.

        Hi Hari,
I have an associate degree widely called as Diploma in Engg (3yrs after class 10). Unfortunately neither the government nor other countries have any regard to it despite being a full time engineering course studied for 3 years long. Strange that a 10+2+3 is considered fairly enough though

        My question is
Having a highest desire to step into to a MS program has no option for me but to get there but has to be a better way for sure?!?!?
I am not discarding a choice for MBA either at this point since I am already into management with 17years of IT experience. However for the gist of it I would like to explore if in the US every three years of experience is considered a ONE year equivalent academic study does it help anyway to my situation?

I would be glad to hear from you as you can and provide some good insight to get me outta here! seriously!! 🙂

@Narayan: Adcoms may think it’s a little late, but what the heck. Go ahead and apply. If you never try, you’ll never know whether you had a chance or not.

@Vedanth: Don’t rush in too early. There’s a reason why bschools suggest having experience before you apply. Here are some of them:

@Jaspreet: If you were not good in academics, you’ll have a tough time competing with the best students from across India who enter the IIM programs.

@Sonali: You can consider a second MBA if you have a strong rationale that you can communicate to Admission Officers through your essays. Here’s more on second MBA applications:

@Asmita: If your 6 years of experience has been purely as a physiotherapost without any other managerial responsibilities, it is unlikely that an MBA will make a dramatic image. Remember that the recruiters who offer jobs after MBA do look at what candidates have done before the MBA as well.

@Rahul: Yes, the gap will affect the applications. Here’s what you can do about it:

I have done my graduation in Arts with 50%. Please suggest whether it is a good option for One year MBA from ISB at this stage of my career to accelerate growth?

        Hi Sameer

I wanted to seek some personal advice from you regarding my future career plans. I am going through a confused mental state where I am not able to decide whether I should go for an MBA at such a late stage in my career ( 13 years of exp. in Telecom sector) or it is not that late at all. I was always interested in adding this degree to my CV but in initial formative years of my career , somehow I was not able to seek admission in any prestigious college owing to few reasons.

So I will shoot straight questions to you to answer:

        1. Full time one year MBA from prestigious colleges in India costs around $ 50,000, and anywhere in Asia and Europe it costs around 120,000-150,000 $ ( including cost of living for an year) . Applicant must have a good GMAT score ( 650-730 approx). Do you think that investing 120,000 or more on myself will have a decent return on investment specially when I have to seek educational loans and I have to shell out a huge chunk of money from my savings to pay for fees and living expenses.

        2. What is the probability of any good college granting me admission if I somehow manages a good GMAT score ( of course I have to burn the midnight fuel for few weeks to get a good score ).

        3. How likely do you think that any company will offer me job placement at such a late stage if I am done with MBA ( if not , then it doesn’t make a business sense ).

        4. What was your experience in terms of gaining business acumen or confidence once you completed your MBA . Did it changed your career projectile.

        5. As of now I am completely enjoying the work which I am doing in office, but the thought of acquiring a post graduate degree keeps on knocking my head ,hence needed your advice or do you think that I can still shape my career without acquiring this degree.

        6. Or shall I apply for executive MBA ( part time) wherein I don’t have to leave the job, but will it have the same impact in terms of me acquiring business principals and world giving it a due weightage. I am based out in Gurgaon currently. Can you suggest some good geographically viable options for me.

I know my message is slightly lengthy and it is going to consume some precious minutes of yours but your advice will definitely enlighten the way forward for many confused souls like me.

      17. Sameer Kamat says:
        September 6, 2016 at 2:14 pm

@Isha: You could apply to ISB as well as IIMs.

You’ll find some interview tips here:

And several interview experiences from successful applicants here:

@Aashika: It’ll be late for ISB. You could look at IIM and the other international programs listed in the article above.

@Venkat: Yes, to both your queries.

@Sushant: Whether it’s a worthwhile investment or not is something only you can decide, since you know your capabilities better than anyone else.

Yes, my experience was very good and it allowed me to change my profile completely (from IT to Finance).

An EMBA reduces the risk (since you aren’t quitting your job or stopping your salary). But it won’t help you do what a full-time degree can.

If you are enjoying your work, don’t feel pressured to chase a degree.

      18. Sushant says:
        September 6, 2016 at 2:26 pm

Thanks Sameer . Request you to please elucidate on point number 2 and 3 ( in my first note above) as they will be the deciding factor for me to go for EMBA or fulltime 1 yr course.

        • Sameer Kamat says:
          September 6, 2016 at 5:35 pm

I don’t have answers to those 2 questions (and I don’t think anybody really can), Sushant. Which is why I stayed away from giving a diplomatic, feel-good response.

Sugar-coated answers are easy to provide and some (incorrectly) consider it as encouragement.

But when you are planning to spend close to a crore on something, taking the easy way out and getting influenced by what someone is saying on the internet is the worst way to take a decision.

Talk to current students and alumni who have had a similar profile as yours, to find out what worked for them and what didn’t. Also, take a call on how much financial risk you are willing to take. Make sure it doesn’t mess up your plans for family and dependents. If after all the research and introspection, you aren’t convinced, drop the plans.

          Sounds like a rational approach?

      19. Sushant says:
        September 7, 2016 at 3:28 pm

Yes Sameer.. It does sound Right and Rational ( after all there are no easy shortcuts in this world 🙂 )… Thanks once again… I appreciate your advice and support.

Constitution 101 now on TV screens

      By Andrew Egger –

Constitution 101 is now available and DVD for a limited time. Andrew Egger | Collegian

Hillsdale College’s marketing department has released a new DVD set of the college’s online Constitution 101 class.

The class, which is the most popular of Hillsdale’s online courses with more than 800,000 viewers since 2012, is something Hillsdale has wanted to release since the Constitution course was re-filmed in 2014, Senior Manager of Direct Response Marketing Jonathan Lewis said. Although the course is online for free, those interested can get the DVDs for a gift to the college of $100 or more, according to an ad for the limited-edition set.

“A lot of our people have asked for it for quite a while,” Lewis said. “People who say ‘I like the online courses, but I want to be able to watch it on my TV or show it to someone else,’ or some people have people over and do it as a group.”

The set was first made available at the American West Center for Constructive Alternatives seminar and in a marketing email a few weeks ago. The set is also advertised in a banner ad on the main course catalog page for Hillsdale’s online classes, which markets it “as part of a homeschool curriculum or for small group discussions.”

“It’s similar to the Constitution Reader, where if someone takes the course and makes a donation, we’ll send them a reader as a ‘thank you’ for that gift,” Lewis said. “So it’s a similar thing, where if they send us a $100 gift as a response to this email, then they’ll get a DVD set.”

Lewis said the college wanted to make the new DVDs more of a luxury item than the bare-bones edition released in 2012.

“We had a set a while ago that was pretty basic, from the 2012 shoot, but we couldn’t really use that anymore, because it was different professors, different content,” he said. “We wanted it to be something where you could put it on your shelf and be proud of this collection.”

The design of the three-disc box set, like many special-edition DVDs, resembles a book, with a Hillsdale logo embossed on the front.

The college also is looking into more DVD versions of its online courses, after getting plenty of orders, Lewis said.

“We were going to kind of see how this one went, but it went very well,” Lewis said. “So we’ll probably wait a bit, ask them and say, ‘Did you enjoy it? Was it a good experience?’ And see what course they’d like to see next on DVD.”
