How to Write a Pharmacy School Admission Essay

By Jared Lewis

Careful consideration and planning should go into a pharmacy school admission essay.

Getting into pharmacy school can be a challenge. Aside from having a high grade-point average, test scores and references, pharmacy school admission committees sometimes require an admission essay. An admission essay is designed to find out more specifically why the admission committee should consider you over another applicant. Writing a pharmacy school admission essay requires thoughtful consideration of those characteristics that will make you a successful student and good pharmacist once you have completed pharmacy school.

Step 1

Create a list of your personal characteristics that you believe will make you a good pharmacist and a good pharmacy student. For instance, pharmacists need to be detail-oriented professionals, so emphasizing the meticulous way in which you double-check details will be helpful to include in your pharmacy school admission essay. Create a list of about 10 to 20 of these characteristics. You can narrow down the list later.

Step 2

Examine your motivation for wanting to become a pharmacist. Pharmacy school admission committees will be extremely interested in your motivation. You need to clearly define your motivation within the scope of your essay, so make sure that it is clear before you start. Potential motivations can include such things as a desire to help others or the opportunity to pursue advanced research that may affect the pharmaceutical industry or medical industry as a whole. Include in your list life and academic experiences that have shaped you as a student and as a person. These will help authenticate your essay by helping the committee make the connection between you, the writer, and you, the person.

Step 3

Research the website of each individual school that you are applying to. Examine their admission requirements carefully, their curriculum and even their faculty profiles. An examination of the school’s website should reveal some of the characteristics they consider important for applicants. Each school may be different. Tailor each essay to the specific preferences of the school.

Step 4

Create an outline from which you will work as your write your essay. The essay should have as its main theme why you want to go to the pharmacy school you are writing the essay for. The admission committee already knows that you want to become a pharmacist or a researcher based on what program you are applying for. What they really want to know is why you chose their school and how you know that you would be a good fit for them. Each major point of your outline should point to this.

Step 5

Write your rough draft using the main points of your outline. Don’t force your writing. Your essay should be biographical, so it should flow from your own experience. The more authentic it sounds, the better. Read your rough draft once you have completed it. Look for grammatical errors or poorly constructed sentences and ideas. Finalize your essay by making the necessary corrections.
