East Carolina University

The Brody School of Medicine

Founded as a public institution in 1907, East Carolina University ranks 181st on U.S. News and World Report’s “Best National Universities” list and offers a wide range of programs to more than 21,000 students seeking undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral degrees. Students searching for accredited healthcare degree programs in North Carolina can look to East Carolina University for thorough instruction, affordable in-state tuition and a decent faculty-to-student ratio of 18:1. The Department of Public Health under East Carolina University’s Brody School of Medicine offers a comprehensive Master of Public Health program designed to prepare students for top careers within the field of health administration.

Master of Public Health (MPH)

Public health professionals need a strong grounding in several health industry disciplines, and the Master of Public Health degree program offered by East Carolina University will help students develop this grounding through the course requirements. The master’s program requires completion of 45 semester hours spread out as follows: 24 credits of core courses, nine credits of courses related to the student’s specific concentration, six credits on a research paper and internship, and six credits of electives. Students may enroll in the program on a part-time or full-time basis, and full-time students typically complete the program within two to four years. Students have the option to take many of the required courses during the late afternoon and evening, which is ideal for students with busy schedules. All students must complete a field placement in order to gain the necessary experience required of public health professionals, but some students may be able to waive this requirement with advisor approval.

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

Gillings School of Global Public Health

Opened officially to students in 1795, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill boasts a unique distinction as being the nation’s first public university and a long-standing history of offering academically rigorous programs to the nation’s top-performing students. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill also makes education affordable with its unique Carolina Covenant program for low-income students, which allows students to graduate debt-free by participating in work-study opportunities and applying for grants instead of loans. For students interested in health administration careers, the university offers three programs at the graduate level that specialize in public health and healthcare administration.

Master of Science in Public Health (MSPH)

Chapel Hill offers three programs under what they call the “Residential Master’s Curriculum” of the Gillings School of Global Public Health: a Master of Science in Public Health, a Master of Healthcare Administration, and a Master of Public Health. The Master of Science in Public Health teaches students how to analyze, develop and implement health policies at the public and private levels. This program prepares students for careers in public policy, research and organizational advocacy. Designed for professionals, this graduate program offers in-depth courses on a variety of topics within the public health field such as epidemiology, health law and economics, and techniques for evaluating health care. The MSPH program requires the completion of 60 semester hours covering core classes and electives, and students will complete internships and professional papers in conjunction with their coursework requirements. At the end of the program, students will also sit for a comprehensive exam.

Master of Healthcare Administration (MHA)

For students who already hold management positions or those who possess work experience within the health industry, UNC Chapel Hill offers a Master of Healthcare Administration degree program designed for professionals who hope to advance their careers by enrolling in accredited healthcare degree programs in North Carolina. The MHA centers on providing the advanced training and theories needed to progress in the healthcare industry. Students who enroll in this program typically already understand the industry and are hoping to advance their position, but the program is open to people with limited experience. Chapel Hill encourages students with limited experience to enroll in the distance-learning version of this program so that they can continue to gain valuable work experience; the school recommends the same approach to professionals who want to continue working full-time during school. Like the MSPH program, the MHA degree requires 60 semester hours, an internship and an extensive research paper as well as a comprehensive final exam.

Master of Public Health (MPH)

Degree programs don’t always follow a linear progression, and in this case the Master of Public Health program offered by UNC Chapel Hill is designed for students who already hold doctoral degrees such as a J.D., Ph.D. or M.D. degree. Like other public health degrees, students will gain a better understanding of healthcare management and how policy affects hospitals and other institutions within the medical community. Unlike other graduate-level public health programs, the students enrolled here already have a strong basis of knowledge when it comes to the ways hospitals and healthcare facilities work. UNC Chapel Hill also allows students who are working toward a doctoral degree to earn an MPH degree simultaneously by completing the necessary requirements for each program. The Master of Public Health degree requires 42 semester hours divided into core classes and electives along with a six-week internship program. Students must also complete a course on professional training and a final paper.

The University of North Carolina at Charlotte

College of Health and Human Services

Despite the University of North Carolina at Charlotte’s relatively short history dating back to 1946, this large urban public school offers a wide range of degrees and programs to more than 26,000 students each year. In just over 60 years, the university has grown into a premier North Carolina university that ranks number 201 on U.S. News and World Report’s “Best National Universities” list. Students seeking accredited healthcare degree programs in North Carolina will find exciting opportunities in one of the school’s two graduate-level programs offered by the school’s College of Health and Human Services under the direction of the Department of Public Health Sciences.

Master of Health Administration (MHA)

UNC Charlotte’s Master of Health Administration program seeks to prepare students for rewarding careers in the health administration field by using an interdisciplinary approach that combines faculty and instructional methods with a diverse range of disciplines and experiences. The program centers on core subjects necessary for pursuing a career in this industry: quantitative methods, accounting and finance, epidemiology, marketing, and strategic management, among others. Students will complete at least 51 credit hours to earn the degree. Of these 51 hours, 45 must come from core courses, three must come from an internship, and the remaining six must come from electives. Students who pursue the MHA program can combine their degree with other disciplines in a dual-degree program in order to develop better specialization in the industry. UNC Charlotte offers the program primarily during the evenings at two locations, and students can complete the program on a full- or part-time basis.

Master of Science in Public Health (MSPH)

Students who plan to pursue careers as health professionals or to lead hospitals and other similar facilities in effective health management will appreciate the Master of Science in Public Health offered by UNC Charlotte’s Department of Public Health Sciences. The program offers detailed instruction on topics related to the public health industry while encouraging students to hone their skills as leaders in a variety of settings such as health facilities, government agencies, and hospitals. Educational objectives include the development of crucial critical thinking skills and analytical abilities within the context of health care decision-making. The MSPH program requires the completion of 45 credit hours divided as follows: 21 core credit hours, nine credit hours of specialty courses, six to nine credit hours of electives, a capstone or thesis worth three to six credits, and an internship worth three credits. Full-time students typically complete the MSPH degree program within five semesters.

The University of North Carolina at Greensboro

UNCG School of Nursing / Bryan School of Business

Coming in at number 190 on U.S. News and World Report’s “Best National Universities” list, the University of North Carolina at Greensboro enjoys a long history of providing quality education since its founding as a public university in 1891. More than 17,500 students attend the university in person with an additional 900 distance-learners enjoying relatively small classes taught by experienced faculty members. The University of North Carolina at Greensboro is one of the original members of the UNC system in North Carolina, and students enrolled in the school’s (Department) will find an excellent dual program for health administration at the graduate level.

Master of Science in Nursing / Master of Business Administration in Health Management

The University of North Carolina at Greensboro takes a different approach to health administration. Rather than concentrating the program into a business degree, the university’s School of Nursing offers a dual degree program that combines elements of the Master of Science in Nursing with the Master of Business Administration in Health Management. Students will apply for this program through the School of Nursing, and many of the courses center on topics relevant to both nursing and health administration careers. The program requires the completion of 62 credit hours covering a broad range of graduate-level professional courses such as the economics of health care, integrative business, quantitative analysis, and organizational leadership and management. Students will take courses that range from theoretical analyses of modern health care topics to technology-driven courses that prepare them for careers in a fast-paced environment. Within the program, students will also take specialty courses to focus on areas that particularly interest them.

In 2013, Forbes ranked the public health profession as number six on its list of the best careers for earning a master’s degree, and it’s no surprise why: According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, health administration professionals enjoy a median income of $88,580 and can expect a 23 percent increase in jobs by 2022. Any one of the accredited healthcare degree programs in North Carolina outlined above will help propel students into this rewarding career.

How Long Does It Take to Get an MBA?

hero-what-is-the-length-of-the-top-mba-programs
If you’re wondering about the length of an MBA program, it’s important to know the amount of time you spend in the classroom will depend on the type of program in which you enroll. If you choose a traditional, full-time, 2-year MBA program you may average as little as two or three hours a day in school. If you choose a more intensive, accelerated MBA program, you may spend as many as six hours a day in class. Part-time MBA programs generally require more limited attendance.

Estimated Length of an MBA Program

The length of an  MBA program —and other graduate degree programs—vary per school, type of program and student circumstances, but here are some examples of typical program lengths for common degree programs:

Type of ProgramCompletion Time
Full-time MBA2 years
Accelerated MBA12 – 18 months
Part-time MBAUsually 3 years
4+1 MBA5 years
Evening/Weekend MBA2 years or more
Executive MBA1-to-2 years
Online MBA1-to-2 years
Specialty Master’s2 years
Joint Degree3-to-4 years
DBA3-to-6 years
PhD4-to-5 years
Executive EducationSeveral days to several months

MBA Teaching Methods

Top MBA programs commonly use a teaching technique known as the “Case Study Method,” which means that, instead of being structured around traditional lectures, essays and exams, in most MBA classes students are divided into teams and presented with business scenarios, complete with problems that they must work together to solve.

Core MBA Business School Subjects

According to The Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC), “Although no two business schools offer the same curriculum, all MBA programs expose students to a common body of knowledge in basic accounting, economics, finance, human resources and organization design, marketing, operations, policy, and quantitative methods and statistics.”

These core subjects are generally taught in the first year of a traditional, 2-year MBA program. Other types of programs may require that you be proficient in some or all of these areas upon entrance, and may not cover as many of them, or cover them in as much detail.

Top MBA Program Success

You’re likely to do well in an MBA program if you’re able to:

  • Work creatively under deadline
  • Articulate your ideas clearly and succinctly—even in high-pressure situations
  • Effectively manage your time
  • Define what you want to get out of a particular experience—and then maintain your focus on these objectives despite distractions
  • Develop good working relationships with team members of diverse personality types and backgrounds
  • Maintain a high energy-level while meeting the demands of a rigorous schedule

Working While Attending School

Working while going to school, depends on the type of program you choose. Part-time and executive programs are designed specifically to meet the needs of working students, while accelerated, 1-year MBA programs are likely to demand your full attention. Most traditional, 2-year MBA programs will probably fall between these two extremes; they may allow you enough time to hold a part-time job, but they’re not specifically designed to accommodate a working person’s schedule, and working while attending business school full time is not generally recommended by schools.

MBA Degree Overview: Why Get an MBA?

Earning an MBA degree is hard work but the rewards are worth the effort. Here are eight payoffs.

Weighing the pros and cons of earning an MBA degree?

As business raises the bar for success, the B-school question is a common one for ambitious working professionals.

With the rise of the Information Age, alternate paths to technical business prowess have proliferated. But there’s no substitute for the leadership savvy, decision-making and strategic skills that an MBA degree provides. Signal potential employers that you’re serious about success with a degree that equips you to solve both the technical and human sides of the management equation.

1. Advance your career

mba-advancecareer-iconIf your present career path is a less than a perfect fit for your aptitudes and interests, one of the benefits of an MBA program is that it allows you the flexibility to explore your options and provides you with the training you need to change careers. If you’re satisfied with your current line of business, a master of business administration degree can prepare you to move into a managerial position within your field.

2. Earn more

mba-earnmore-iconCome payday, the benefits of an MBA degree show up as a bigger paycheck. As of 2016, the median starting salary for new MBAs hit $100,000, according to an annual survey by the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC).

In another 2016 survey of B-school alumni by GMAC, 90% of respondents reported that their MBA degree had boosted their earning power.

3. Gain employer support

mba-gainsupport-iconAs today’s marketplace evolves and becomes increasingly complex, many employers are choosing to balance their need to retain good employees with their need to fill managerial positions with candidates possessing advanced-level knowledge and skills. They’re doing this by sending selected employees to business school for their MBA degrees—and footing the bill.

4. Start your own business

mba-startbiz-iconIf you’re interested in starting your own business, but not sure you have the necessary expertise to launch a start-up in a high-growth industry, an MBA degree can prepare you to do everything from writing a business plan to acquiring venture capital to launching an IPO. Research has shown that the failure rate for small businesses started by MBAs is about 50 percent less than the standard failure rate.

5. Develop your business savvy

mba-savvy-iconAn MBA degree will put you on the fast track to career advancement by offering you the chance to develop a wide range of general business knowledge and a broad base of technical skills in a relatively short period of time, as opposed to the years-long trial-and-error process that tends to characterize knowledge and skill gleaned from on-the-job learning.

6. Lead in an emerging field

mba-lead-iconA recent proliferation of “niche” Master of Business Administration programs means that you can not only look to business school for a firm grounding in the basics, but for innovative education that can lead to an exciting career in a newly emerging field such as brand management, information technology, e-commerce or mobile telecommunications—just to name a few.

7. Grow your network

mba-network-iconNetworking is another key benefit of the MBA degree. Business school teaching styles encourage teamwork, and over the course of an MBA program, you’ll develop important relationships that can serve you well throughout your business career. And no matter the school, you can often get plugged into a network of alumni working at a wide range of companies. This is useful for mentoring, job searches and professional contacts.

8. Enjoy greater job security

mba-jobsecurity-iconMBA grads are desirable in any job market; an MBA will give you the opportunities you need to advance in the business world.

Now that you understand the rewards of earning your MBA, it’s time to start learning which type of MBA program will fit with your busy lifestyle.

4 Steps to Prepare for an MBA Degree

mba-step1 Create a great track record. Assuming you’ve already earned your bachelor’s degree, pave the way to an MBA by first working hard in your current role. Sign up for stretch assignments that take you beyond your comfort zone, and cultivate a strong network. Business schools expect applicants to show a solid work history of at least two years, and they generally require references. Set yourself up for success by excelling in the role you have today

mba-step2 Research your options. The range and variety of MBA programs have exploded in recent years. From delivery formats to areas of academic emphasis, all programs are not created equal. Check out our roundup of the different types of MBA degree programs below

mba-step3 Take the Graduate Management Admissions Test.Traditional schools require applicants to submit their GMAT scores with their materials. It’s a four-part standardized test that measures analytical writing, quantitative, verbal and integrated reasoning skills.

mba-step4 Or not. (See #1 above). Many accredited schools have kicked the GMAT requirement to the curb . They recognize that performance on a standardized test isn’t always a clear predictor of academic success. As B-school applicants showcase extensive business track records, schools are scrutinizing work histories and previous education.

Types of MBA Degree Programs

Business schools are breaking out of traditional formats to offer a range of routes to the MBA degree—many of which are ideally suited to working professionals. Consider your circumstances and priorities to see which format is right for you:

Are you a mid- to senior-level manager with five or more years of business experience under your belt? The curriculum in this MBA degree format emphasizes real-life scenarios that improve leadership, decision-making and strategic skills. The online EMBA schedule usually offers the flexibility for local students to meet weekly, while out-of-state peers join them for monthly or quarterly intensives.

Choosing an MBA Degree Program: 5 Factors to Consider

From accreditation to school rankings, what are the most important things to consider when choosing an MBA program? See which factors matter the most.

mba-5factors

mba-1MBA Degree Program Accreditation

It’s crucial that the business schools you’re considering have earned national or regional accreditation. An outside agency conducts an evaluation to determine if the school meets it standards for academic quality and rigor. The school then undergoes monitoring, with periodic re-evaluations to maintain accreditation.

The primary accreditors for business schools are the elite Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, plus the Accreditation Council for Collegiate Business Schools & Programs, and—for online MBA degree programs—the Distance Education Accrediting Commission.

Beyond the stamp of approval, accreditation directly affects your bottom line. Only students enrolled in accredited schools are eligible for federal student loans and grants.

mba-2MBA Degree Program Rankings

How much credence should you lend the much-publicized B-school rankings? Before you put the top-ranking schools at the top of your list, know which criteria each list-maker uses:

U.S. News & World Report began publishing separate rankings for traditional and online MBA degree formats in 2015. Its criteria include:

  • Admissions selectivity
  • Student engagement
  • Peer reputation
  • Faculty credentials

Bloomberg Businessweek ranks business schools biannually, measuring their mettle with these three markers:

  • Student survey (45%) – students rate the quality of academic and career development offerings
  • Employer survey (45%) – corporate recruiters rate MBA holders on specific qualities
  • Intellectual capital (10%) – Bloomberg counts the articles published by business school faculty in 20 top business journals over the previous five years
The Economist employs two surveys—one completed by schools, and the other by current students and recent graduates. The schools’ responses are weighted at 80% of the score, while student input takes the remaining 20%.

mba-3MBA Degree Program Faculty Credentials

As you investigate potential MBA degree programs, check out the faculty bios on the schools’ websites. What degrees do professors hold? Do they have real-life work experience in the industries about which they teach? Have they published work in scholarly and/or professional journals?

mba-4MBA Degree Student Support Systems

Don’t short-change the student services as you research potential schools. Look for financial aid resources—including a fully staffed office to help navigate the options—and access to corporate recruiters. Investigate the school’s relationship to companies in your target industry. Can you meet recruiters at job fairs and other networking opportunities? What about mentoring and career counseling? Go the extra mile and ask the school to provide documentation of graduation rates and alumni employment stats.

mba-5Other MBA Degree Students

mba-otherstudentsYou’ll be spending lot of time with fellow students on your MBA degree journey. Before you enroll, make sure that the student mix is a good cultural and professional fit for you. Can you see yourself learning alongside them? Is there an active alumni network that operates in locations and professional fields that are relevant to you? One of the biggest benefits of business school is the expanded network it offers—be sure that you’re joining the right one for you.

MBA Degree Costs

What’s the price tag for an MBA? In the U.S., costs are all over the map. Tuition ranges from less than $15,000 at West Texas A&M University, to more $95,000 for the University of North Carolina’s top-ranked distance MBA program.

In some cases, a school might charge less for its online MBA program than for its traditional degree program. But at other schools, the opposite is true. And at still others, the online and on-campus MBA degree programs cost exactly the same.

Do your research. Each MBA degree program should clearly list tuition and fees on its website. Don’t forget to calculate costs beyond tuition, such as books, commuting or relocation costs, journal subscriptions and technology fees.

Paying for the MBA Degree

If you’re wondering how you’ll foot the bill for an MBA, you’re not alone. Thousands of other working adults are pondering the same question. Check out a few options for funding your education:

mba-financialaidFederal Student Aid for Graduate Students

The FAFSA form requires an average of just 17 minutes to complete. The starting point to qualify for all federal student loans, it’s a free tool offered by the U.S. Department of Education.

To be eligible for federal aid, you must:

  • be enrolled (or accepted) in an eligible program at least half-time
  • be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen
  • demonstrate financial need

Government-backed loans offer a variety of repayment plans, including an option to tie payments to your income. Private lenders rarely offer such flexible terms.

mba-scholarshipmoneyScholarships and Grants

Don’t stop with the FAFSA. Depending on your finances and background, you might qualify for a scholarship or grant to help fund your MBA degree. These forms of financial aid don’t require repayment. Grants are typically need-based, whereas scholarships are targeted to academics or specific fields of study.

Start your search with the U.S. Department of Labor’s  massive database , which contains more than 1,000 scholarships available for graduate students.

Take the Next Step

With starting salaries and demand on the rise, there’s no better time to turbo-charge your career with the resume-boosting MBA degree. Discover the program that’s right for you.

Covering Katy News

UH Victoria at Katy MBA Program Popular with Students

City of Katy 0 Comments

KATY – With its flexible course delivery and affordable tuition, the University of Houston-Victoria School of Business Administration continues to be a popular choice for students pursuing a Master of Business Administration.

The Houston Business Journal recently listed UHV as having the third-largest Houston-area MBA program based on enrollment.

The UHV School of Business Administration had 537 MBA students this fall. Many of those students live in the Houston area and take classes at the UHV Katy Campus. Others took classes at UHV’s main campus in Victoria or online.

“The word is out about UHV’s high-quality, affordable MBA program,” said Farhang Niroomand, dean of the UHV School of Business Administration. “We continue to be competitive for MBA students in one of the largest markets in the U.S. This top-three listing is a sign that we have a lot to offer students.”

UH-Downtown topped the Houston Business Journal enrollment list followed by Rice University. Of the dozen schools on the list, UHV had the most anticipated graduates and the second most affordable tuition per credit hour.

“Not only is UHV a great value, but our MBA students are finishing the program,” said Jifu Wang, UHV School of Business Administration associate dean and MBA program director. “A lot of our students already are working full time and have busy lives. But with UHV’s accessibility and flexibility, they are able to excel in the courses at their pace.”

UHV offers a Global MBA and a Strategic MBA. The global degree provides students with an international perspective while the strategic degree teaches students a cross-disciplinary approach to tackling complex business problems.

UHV consolidated its Greater Houston operations during the summer to its new UHV Katy Campus, 2002 W. Grand Parkway N., Building 2. A number of MBA classes were held this fall at the new campus as was several events, including the school’s Distinguished Speaker Series and MBA Case Conference. The school also holds classes and events in Victoria.

“It’s encouraging that we remain in the top three on the list given that many of our face-to-face students had to get used to taking classes in a new location,” Niroomand said. “Now that we are established in Katy for the long run, I think we have the foundation for more growth.”

Example Capstone Proposal Summary – Technology

Technology Capstone WritingAs technology continues to evolve, companies both large and small are seeking opportunities to reduce spending while using technology to grow their respective businesses into efficient entities. Whether through infrastructure improvements or enhanced products, this trend is beginning to be realized for many corporations. This project will focus on one of the world’s largest hotel chains and their effort to become leaders in the world of hospitality. In June of 2015, the Marriot chain of hotels flagship brand of Marriot international along with Netflix announced a groundbreaking partnership to revolutionize the guest room experience. They will be the first hotel and commercial organization in any capacity to cut the proverbial and physical cord of Cable TV in an effort to provide more comfortable and appealing entertainment television options. I am charged with planning and implementing this endeavor in the Marriot hotel located in Melville, NY.

Before we can determine the project scope and the upgrades necessary to support this endeavor, I will need to utilize a degree of project management principles in order to define a strategic flow from one step to another in an ordered manner. As per the Project Management Body of Knowledge Guide (PMBOK) I have already gained the necessary approval from the Marriot’s senior leadership members in order to approach local management and begin the planning phase of this project (Project Management Institute, 2008). I met with the Marriot’s regional vice president of operations, director of information technology management, local hotel manager – or for the purposes of this project, stakeholders – to determine current challenges, budgeting constraints, deadlines and the eventual acceptance of the project’s deliverables. As per site-management, the Melville Marriot has presently committed over $1300/month to an antiquated/basic satellite TV and shared bandwidth DSL internet services which is provided by local provider Broadview Networks. This service is delivered to 35 guest rooms, 4 suites and a visitor’s lounge. The stakeholders described their TV services as boringly basic with access to undesirable networks, the Internet as terribly slow with peak traffic speeds often below 1Mbit/second and described WI-FI accessibility as virtually non-existent. The stakeholders have confirmed that they’re prepared to allocate up to $15,000 for one-time equipment charges and mandatory network upgrade, as well as increase their total monthly budget to $1800/mo.

Based on their budget, timeline and current broadband infrastructure, I have chosen to partner with local telecom provider Lightpath to put together a total solution to meet these goals. The project will entail the rationale necessary to determine which configurations to use with Optical Transport Network (OTS) and Managed WI-FI services. The deliverables for this project will include high-speed, gigabit connection with transmission between 5GB-10GB, and a 10GB burst available on-demand during peak data hours. The aforementioned burst will be most beneficial to the client while their customer’s access video streaming as well as WI-FI services. The Marriot chains of hotels are among the first hotel chains to reach an agreement with Netflix to offer streaming video services to their guests. This Netflix package will allow for instant logon privileges on up to 50 television units and single-session logon to over 100 mobile devices.

For the purposes of this project, we will focus primarily on the infrastructure components required to achieve our project deliverables.

Wireless Routers

For Managed Wi-Fi, the Cisco Dual Gigabit WAN VPN Router (RV042G-NA) will be provided by Lightpath, but thankfully we will have the option of choosing either the Cisco WAP321 or Ubiquiti Networks UniFi access points. The amount of access points necessary will be decided later on.

Multimedia Streaming Video Access:

– We will decide whether to go with either the Roku or Apple TV multimedia streaming devices.

– By and large my main objective is to provide a comprehensive Internet/Streaming Video solution that will exceed expectations, provide scalability for future growth while remaining cost effective. I am fully prepared to give my opinion on all matters relative to the project, albeit unpopular, as long as the suggested solution makes sense in the long run. The Proof of Concept (POC) testing was completed on July 15th, 2015. The Marriot’s stakeholders were briefed on outcomes and recommendations on July 24th and all sides are in agreement with the recommendation to proceed with the project. The stakeholders have also requested a project completion date of October 1st, 2015.

Review of Other Work

At the recommendation of Lightpath, we will go with the Cisco RV042G-NA Gigabit Router. Although I would have preferred to go with a unit of my choosing, I was pleased to find that after extensive research, the selected RV unit comes highly regarded due to its secure VPN – which provides access to over 100 simultaneous connections and it includes world-class security features such as advanced encryption, and authentication, which will placate our stakeholders (Cisco). The fact that it is Managed Wi-Fi also offers the benefit of outsourcing the complexities and costs associated with a wireless data network without the expense of up-front capital, training and ongoing support, thus eliminating the risk of technology obsolescence.

Five strategically placed access points will complement the managed Wi-Fi solution. At the behest of the Marriot’s Director of IT, we will consider the Cisco WAP321 access point due to its guaranteed, direct compatibility with Lightpath’s selected router as well as the fact that Ligthpath has used this AP in a few of their previous projects. Although the Cisco unit offers less risk of compatibility issues, I have suggested that the stakeholders also consider the Ubiquiti Networks UniFi AP due to its affordability – at almost half the price of the Cisco unit with a total range of up to 400 feet.

The UniFi AP can be purchased for less than $100 each and it provides exceptional range and reliability. Perhaps most importantly for the Marriot is the fact that the UniFi AP has a much different design from that of the Cisco WAP321. The UniFI AP is a sleek AP that actually looks a lot like a smoke detector. Because of this, the device can be placed on any wall or ceiling in the hotel room and not arouse the slightest bit of suspicion from the guests. It is possible that even more of these access points could be placed throughout the hotel in an effort to make the signal even more reliable, since it is far more nondescript than a traditional device. A comparison of the two devices can be seen below:

– The Cisco WAP321

– The UniFi AP

Though there are several advantages to the UniFi AP as can be seen from the photos. But there is another, even more pertinent reason for the Marriot to consider using UniFi access points. In 2011 Gartner, a technology research firm, issued a report that condemned the use of single-vendor networks (Duffy, 2011). Gartner insisted that a multi-vendor approach could significantly reduce customer costs and simplify their operations, in direct contrast to the end-to-end architectural approach advocated by Cisco (Duffy, 2011). These cost savings can be significant for enterprise customers and the additional simplicity of design can make the system much easier to maintain over the long run.

Cisco, however, insists that their approach to networking with a strategic vendor relationship is more business critical (Duffy, 2011). Many companies apparently agree with the way Cisco approaches networking. Prior to engaging Cisco as their network provider, the Columbus Regional Airport Authority used equipment from both 3Com and HP (Duffy, 2011). With three airports and 350 employees this system proved to unmanageable for their team of twenty IT employees (Duffy, 2011). Additionally as they look to install passenger kiosks, high-definition cameras and video analytics for security, a single vendor makes more sense (Duffy, 2011).

Tesco, a company with 5,000 locations and over 500,000 employees has had a single vendor for their networking needs for several years (Duffy, 2011).. Tesco uses Cisco TelePresence for its intra-company collaboration and is currently seeking to outfit many of its stores with Wi-Fi so its customers will have in-store internet access (Duffy, 2011). None of this, they insist, would be possible with a multi-vendor network and, in fact, the current setup gives them a tremendous advantage over their competitors.

For simplicity sake it may be best to go with the Cisco WAP321 for the time being. This device has been proven reliable with Lightpath in the past and also works well with the system that is being installed. Management prefers to keep everything as simple as possible for future maintenance and upgrades. It is possible that a UniFi AP could be installed at some later date so that it could be monitored for performance and compatibility. If it proves to be a capable device in the system, it could become permanent.

Project Rationale

One major concern of the stakeholders was that the available speeds may not be sufficient for multiple video streaming at one time. This could conceivably prove problematic in the evening when most of the guests are in their rooms and watching TV before going to sleep for the night. The issue could certainly be exacerbated on busy holidays or weekends when the hotel is fully booked. The staff was concerned that their already sluggish connections would be inundated with requests and everyone would experience only spotty results, at best, with their streaming connections. Another solution was required.

Netflix recommends that its users have at least 3Mbps available in order to view high definition video streams (Komando, 2014). While that is not a problem for one room watching one movie, it could present issues if ten rooms are all trying to stream a movie at once. In such a scenario, the usage would then increase to over 30 Mbps. Twenty rooms at once would take you up to 60 Mbps and so on. That’s fine as long as only one person in the room is using the connection, but often there are multiple devices in each room all connected simultaneously. It is easy to see the need for faster, more reliable connections in excess of 100 Mbps.

The only solution that appeared to consistently offer such speeds was an Optical Transport Network over fiber optic lines. Lightpath offered just such a service with speeds from 1 Gb to 10 Gb with 10 Gb bursts. This will provide more than adequate speed at all times for the multiple users to access the Internet at once, even if they are all streaming video at the same time. There should be no issues with video lag or other Internet-related problems due to the ISP.

Another potential bottleneck with the service is the wireless speed that the routers are capable of attaining. The Cisco 321WAP is rated for 802.11n Wi-Fi speeds. 802.11m is capable of achieving 300 Mbps for each device, though they rarely reach such lofty speeds. Even so, by positioning five of these devices throughout the hotel, the speeds achieved should be adequate In the event that the devices only reach about half their speed, it would still allow for about fifty streaming videos on each one at any given time.

Though several options were available for streaming services, it was felt that Netflix offered the best name recognition and most reliable services. It also has a well-known and extensive library of videos from which to choose. The cost of the service is also in line with other similar offerings. The decision to use Apple TV or Roku may simply come down to cost, as there seems to be little advantage to one over the other. The decision to go with Lightpath as ISP for the hotel was an easy choice, considering they offer the best plan for the money in regards to speed and they have an excellent reputation in their industry.

Systems Analysis and Methodology

In order to ensure that the design is suitable to the needs of the end-users, a proper design analysis method must be used. Since this is a Cisco-based system, it only makes sense to employ their PPDIOO method of analysis. The first part of this analysis is Prepare, which involves establishing organizational requirements and developing the strategy. Next is to Plan by identifying initial network requirements based on goals, facilities and user needs. From those steps the initial requirements drive the activity of Design. This is a comprehensive detailed design that meets current business and technical requirements. That allows the next step of Implementing the design to occur. Operation is the final test of the appropriateness of the design and it involve maintaining network health through day-to-day operations. Finally the system can be Optimized over time through proactive management of the network.

Currently there is a shared bandwidth DSL service that must be replaced by the Optical Transport network. This will not require a major renovation since the basic infrastructure for the new system is virtually unchanged. All that will be required is to install the new equipment.

What is the difference between feasibility studies and pilot testing?

Feasibility study: “Feasibility studies are pieces of research done before a main study to answer the question ‘Can this study be done?’ They are used to estimate important parameters that are needed to design the main study” [1] . Data collected would not be analyzed or included in publications.

    Examples:

    1. Going to a potential site to see if the research is possible
    2. Checking to see what is the best approach to the research
    3. Going through a consent process with friends to see if the information is comprehensible
    4. Sending your survey instrument to a few experts in the field for their feedback as to whether or not the questions are appropriate for the topic and/or cohort of the research
    5. Feedback from colleagues and peers about research design
    6. Student researcher designs questionnaire for their study’s target population and asks someone from a different population to test the questionnaire

    Scenario:

A researcher planning to conduct interviews regarding landowner perspectives of land use regulations contacts the US Forest Service to ask how they have typically approached land owners in the past and asks for feedback on their planned questions.

Pilot testing: “A small scale-study conducted prior to conducting an actual experiment; designed to test and refine procedures.”

     Examples:

    1. Checking to see if the designed tool works
    2. Asking people to complete a survey to find out whether a question results in the requested information
    3. Testing the intervention with four people before trying it with 60 people
    4. Asking people to complete your survey and then revising the questions based on their responses
    5. Revising the study after analyzing preliminary data and determining that the data do not address their research question
    6. Student researcher designs questionnaire for their study’s target population, asks the population to try out the questionnaire, and the questions are revised based on the responses

    Scenario:

A researcher planning to conduct interviews regarding landowner perspectives of land use regulations conducts interviews with 5 people to test the questions and see if they get answers that make sense. The researchers may revise their interview guides based on the initial data collected.

Q: Does my feasibility study/pilot testing require IRB Review?

A: The federal regulations indicate that pilot testing meets the definition of research involving human subjects and requires IRB review. However, feasibility studies typically do not meet the definition of research involving human subjects and therefore would not require IRB review.

In order for the IRB to determine whether your activities constitute a feasibility study or pilot testing, and subsequently, whether they require IRB review, please complete and submit the initial sections of the new application and protocol form, which can be found on the ” Preparing an Initial Submission ” page. In this form, it is helpful to note with whom the study or testing is going to be done and how the data will be used.

    Case study Writing

    Case study Writing

The process of writing a case study. The structure of the paper.

People who work in business, marketing, social sciences, legal, medical, engineering, academic, and many other fields quite often need to submit reports about a person, a group of people, or a situation that they have been studying over a certain period of time. Such a published report is called case study, and in order to write good case studies one should follow specific guidelines because they have a particular style and format.

Is There Any Difference between Essay and Case Study?

You might be already familiar with essay writing . Essays differ from case studies because they answer a certain question based on research through the author’s own evaluation. Reports, in turn, present and analyze findings from practical research. While reports are usually descriptive and describe sequential events such as experiments or results from surveys, essay can be descriptive, evaluative, and discursive. The type of the essay depends on the given questions.

Because case studies are educational for readers, they have to provide information as clear as possible. The structure of this writing should be as follows:

    Title

The title should give a very accurate description of a study. It has to be very effective because its function is to let readers know what the main focus of the study is.

    Abstract

Since it is not a scientific paper, the abstract in this writing does not have a structure, i.e. no subheadings of methodology, conclusions, etc. You need to give a background which has to outline, for instance, the clinical condition of the study under analysis. Then you need to provide relevant details and results of the study and give an overall conclusion. The final step is to give five key words.

    Introduction

In this section you need to provide a brief review of the published literature relevant to your subject. The best kind of articles to use here are other review articles and the first case that was described in the literature.

    Case Report

If you are working in the field of medicine, for example, in this part you write about your patient’s health issues, treatment, and laboratory results. All the data has to be presented in chronological order and in figures or tables. Research ethics is crucial: your patient cannot be identified anywhere in the study. If a photo is necessary, your patient has to sign a written consent. To publish your writing you have to contact the primary care physician and come to an agreement.

    Discussion

In this section one presents the case and the laboratory findings. An author’s job is to relate his/her findings to the previous studies and, in case they differ, make it clear what is the reason of this difference and what your scientific opinion is. The question you should answer here is why your paper is unique.

    Conclusion

Make a summary of what you have learnt from your study. Do not repeat the case history; just give short and informative conclusions.

    Acknowledgement

If there are people who have assisted you in your study but are not co-authors, make sure to acknowledge them.

    References

You can use only reliable sources in this section such as peer-reviewed scholarly articles. Make sure that the entire reference is accurate according to the style – MLA, APA, etc.

    Tables and Figures

If you have a lot of data that you cannot mention in the discussion section, put it to tables and figures and locate them in this section of your writing. Adding tables and photographs is a great strategic decision because it makes the writing more informative and comprehensible.

Are People Taught Case Study Writing?

This type of writing is rather popular in education system and quite often happens to be a student assignment. This project is very helpful in school/university because it allows students to apply their knowledge in practice. For example, students who take courses in psychotherapy or physiology can put themselves in the role of professionals and examine how certain method can be applied to the person in the story and how your case management and counseling skills can help the client.

Not only can students pay more attention to the development of their technical writing skills, but also they can demonstrate their individual approach to a specific issue. Although teaching how to write a case study requires a lot of time, students need training in this field because the process of the case study writing is complex. A good guide will help them learn how to use their analytical skills to make a better work. Besides, you can always mention this skill during the interview with the company you want to work for .

What Is the Case Study Method?

If you are a student in a law school or are planning to get your MBA, Harvard University has prepared a lot of extremely helpful tips on case study writing for current and prospective students. For instance, Harvard Law School presents the difference between case study method and case method. While the first method uses a narrative of a legal dilemma to showcase the principles of law, the second one uses a court decision for the same purpose. The case study method requires teamwork and discussion between the participants whereas the case method uses the discussion between professor and student. Finally, the case study method analyzes the dilemma in its developments while the second method analyzes it after it has been resolved.

My most influential person and the best friend is my mother

This is my first rough draft of this essay. please critique it and thank you for your help!

The most influential person in my life is my mother. She taught me how to keep loving through the good and the bad. My mothers love is unconditional, it is a trait i wish to equip throughout my life. I was about 13 when I found out that my mother loved me unconditionally. The moment I lost my mothers necklace (that my grandmother gave to her) I thought she was going to kill me. I had never seen my mother so mad at me. I began to cry as she was yelling at me;I ran into my room, closed the door, and wept all night. The next day my mom walked into my room and told me she was sorry with the most regretful look on her face. I knew my mother was truly sorry. As we hugged in closure, she started to cry on my shoulder. I told my mom I will do anything to find it, but my mothers response was "That necklace will never amount to how much I love you". I will forever be amazed about my mothers love and care for me.

She is also incredible at getting things done. It does not matter of the situation, my mother always comes through with whatever was needed. She puts others needs before hers and I love that about her. Whenever someone asks for something, she is always the first one to deliver. When I play softball we usually have 2 games a day, during these games somebody always runs out of water. My mother being the caring person she is, offers to go buy them water from a store near by. During are breaks between games she rushes to go get water. When she returns she comes back with water, snacks, and ice for the ice chests. My mother always comes with more than needed just to keep her friends and loved ones happy. I will never understand how big her heart is, but I hope my heart takes after hers. My mother is my best friend. Like all best friends she gives me the best advice. She has always tells me to stop getting mad over the little things, to be more giving, and to strive for greatness. If there is anyone who knows my flaws better than me, it is my mother. She knows exactly how to make my mood change from mad to happy. She is a girls best friend and a perfect mother. Day by day I take into consideration the things my mother has taught me. She is my most influential person, not only because she is a loving mother, but because she is an impeccable woman whose wisdom and selflessness carry throughout her family.

The most influential person in my life is my mother. She taught me how to continue loving through the good and the bad. My mother s love is unconditional, it is a characteristicIhope to equip [I dont like the word equip here, I dont think it makes sense. Perhaps, try a characteristic that you hope to abide by, or follow, etc] throughout my life. I was about 13 when I found out that my mother loved me unconditionally. This sentence is repetitive. If the age 13 is important try incorporating it into the sentence before. The moment I lost my mothers necklace (that my grandmother gave to her)the (adjective) necklace that had been in my family for generations I thought she was going to kill me Dont know if I like this wording, maybe something like I stopped dead in my tracks, deathly afraid of her rash reaction . I had never seen my mother so mad,at me. I began to cry as she was yelling at mecontinued to yellat me is implied . I ran into my room, closed the door, and wept all night. Why? Did you feel like you disappointed her? The sentence as it stands isnt very strong because it doesnt provide any reasoning behind it. Yes, you lost her necklace. Yes, she was mad. But had you not experienced this type of reaction before? Provide something so that readers can relate. Without any context, it almost sounds like youre overemotional and thats not what you want The next day my mom walked into my room and told me she was sorry with the most regretful looka look of regret etched upon her face. In that moment I knew my mother was truly sorry and despite any remaining anger/disappointment, her love for me would be eternal . As we hugged in closure, she started to cry on my shoulder. I told my mom I will do anything to find it, but my mothers response was "That necklace will never amount to how much I love you". I will forever be amazed about my mothers love and care for me. I recommend trying to tell the story as it happened. It seems like for the most part what you are doing is telling the story, pause, reflection. Repeat. It might be more effective to tell it as it happened, reflections imbedded throughout. You have an emotional experience for both you and your mother that illustrates how it made your bond stronger. But you dont reveal much emotion throughout, but you should!

You need a linking sentence to combine the two ideas between unconditional love and her efficiency/dependability
She is also incredible at getting things done. It does not matter of the situation, my mother always comes through with whatever was needed. She puts others needs before herselfand I love that about herWe already know that you love her, so try ending her with an example . Whenever someone asks for something, she is always the first one to deliver. examples? When I play softball we usually have 2 games a day, during these games somebody always runs out of water.Try rephrasing it like this: Playing multiple softball games on the weekends, it is inevitable that my teammates will run out of water My mother being the caringcompassionate person she is, offers to go buy them water from a store nearby . During areour breaks between games she rushes to go getretrieve water. though there is no personal benefit? maybe? When she returns she comes back with water, snacks, and ice for the ice chests. Not necessary My mother always comesarrives prepared with more than needed justin order to keep her friends and loved ones happy. I will never be able to understand how big her heart isher heart is so enormous/welcoming , but I hope my heart takes after hers I think there might be a better way to phrase this to make it less repetitive but would retain the same idea . This new idea seemed to pop out of nowhere, find a link or try a new paragraph My mother is my best friend. Like all best friends she gives me the best advice. She has always tells me to stop getting madfretting/getting hung up over the little things, to be more givinggive more , and to strive for greatness. You want to keep the verbs all in the same tense. Stop, give, strive. If there is anyone who knows my flaws better than me, it is my mother. Are you sure you mean flaws? Saying flaws makes it seem really negative. She knows exactly how to makebrighten/improve my mood change from mad to happy. She is a girl s best friend and a perfect mother. Day by day I take into consideration the things my mother has taught me. She is mythe most influential person to me . Beyond her compassion for myself and othersnot only because she is a loving mother, but because she is an impeccable Not feeling that choice of words woman whose wisdom and selflessness carry throughout her family.is evident in her daily activities/is an admirable characteristic

You have awesome ideas throughout, with a little editing on passive/active voice and remaining WITHIN the story instead of just an observer, it can be great! It is YOUR story, remember that. Though it is about your mother, you want to make sure that beyond just her actions, you discuss your emotional attachment and what not

    Sample Essay 1

    Wellesley, Influence of mother

It took me eighteen years to realize what an extraordinary influence my mother has been on my life. She’s the kind of person who has thoughtful discussions about which artist she would most want to have her portrait painted by (Sargent), the kind of mother who always has time for her four children, and the kind of community leader who has a seat on the board of every major project to assist Washington’s impoverished citizens. Growing up with such a strong role model, I developed many of her enthusiasms. I not only came to love the excitement of learning simply for the sake of knowing something new, but I also came to understand the idea of giving back to the community in exchange for a new sense of life, love, and spirit.

My mother’s enthusiasm for learning is most apparent in travel. I was nine years old when my family visited Greece. Every night for three weeks before the trip, my older brother Peter and I sat with my mother on her bed reading Greek myths and taking notes on the Greek Gods. Despite the fact that we were traveling with fourteen-month-old twins, we managed to be at each ruin when the site opened at sunrise. I vividly remember standing in an empty ampitheatre pretending to be an ancient tragedian, picking out my favorite sculpture in the Acropolis museum, and inserting our family into modified tales of the battle at Troy. Eight years and half a dozen passport stamps later I have come to value what I have learned on these journeys about global history, politics and culture, as well as my family and myself.

While I treasure the various worlds my mother has opened to me abroad, my life has been equally transformed by what she has shown me just two miles from my house. As a ten year old, I often accompanied my mother to (name deleted), a local soup kitchen and children’s center. While she attended meetings, I helped with the Summer Program by chasing children around the building and performing magic tricks. Having finally perfected the “floating paintbrush” trick, I began work as a full time volunteer with the five and six year old children last June. It is here that I met Jane Doe, an exceptionally strong girl with a vigor that is contagious. At the end of the summer, I decided to continue my work at (name deleted) as Jane’s tutor. Although the position is often difficult, the personal rewards are beyond articulation. In the seven years since I first walked through the doors of (name deleted), I have learned not only the idea of giving to others, but also of deriving from them a sense of spirit.

Everything that my mother has ever done has been overshadowed by the thought behind it. While the raw experiences I have had at home and abroad have been spectacular, I have learned to truly value them by watching my mother. She has enriched my life with her passion for learning, and changed it with her devotion to humanity. In her endless love of everything and everyone she is touched by, I have seen a hope and life that is truly exceptional. Next year, I will find a new home miles away. However, my mother will always be by my side.

    Comments:

The topic of this essay is the writer’s mother. However, the writer definitely focuses on herself, which makes this essay so strong. She manages to impress the reader with her travel experience, volunteer and community experience, and commitment to learning without ever sounding boastful or full of herself. The essay is also very well organized.

    Sample Essay 2

    Harvard, Favorite fictional character

Of all the characters that I’ve “met” through books and movies, two stand out as people that I most want to emulate. They are Attacus Finch from To Kill A Mockingbird and Dr. Archibald “Moonlight” Graham from Field of Dreams. They appeal to me because they embody what I strive to be. They are influential people in small towns who have a direct positive effect on those around them. I, too, plan to live in a small town after graduating from college, and that positive effect is something I must give in order to be satisfied with my life.

Both Mr. Finch and Dr. Graham are strong supporting characters in wonderful stories. They symbolize good, honesty, and wisdom. When the story of my town is written I want to symbolize those things. The base has been formed for me to live a productive, helpful life. As an Eagle Scout I represent those things that Mr. Finch and Dr. Graham represent. In the child/adolescent world I am Mr. Finch and Dr. Graham, but soon I’ll be entering the adult world, a world in which I’m not yet prepared to lead.

I’m quite sure that as teenagers Attacus Finch and Moonlight Graham often wondered what they could do to help others. They probably emulated someone who they had seen live a successful life. They saw someone like my grandfather, 40-year president of our hometown bank, enjoy a lifetime of leading, sharing, and giving. I have seen him spend his Christmas Eves taking gifts of food and joy to indigent families. Often when his bank could not justify a loan to someone in need, my grandfather made the loan from his own pocket. He is a real-life Moonlight Graham, a man who has shown me that characters like Dr. Graham and Mr. Finch do much much more than elicit tears and smiles from readers and movie watchers. Through him and others in my family I feel I have acquired the values and the burning desire to benefit others that will form the foundation for a great life. I also feel that that foundation is not enough. I do not yet have the sophistication, knowledge, and wisdom necessary to succeed as I want to in the adult world. I feel that Harvard, above all others, can guide me toward the life of greatness that will make me the Attacus Finch of my town.

    Comments:

This essay is a great example of how to answer this question well. This applicant chose characters who demonstrated specific traits that reflect on his own personality. We believe that he is sincere about his choices because his reasons are personal (being from a small town, and so forth). He managed to tell us a good deal about himself, his values, and his goals while maintaining a strong focus throughout.

    Sample Essay 3

Harvard, Family illness: Mother’s fight with cancer

I am learning, both through observations and first-hand experiences, that there are many mishaps in life which seem to be unexplainable and unfair, and yet have devastating consequences. Disease fits into this category. Its atrocity does not stem from the fact that it is a rare or uncommon occurrence, since illness and disease pervade our lives as we hear numerous stories of sick people and come into contact with them each day. However, there is a marked difference between reading in the newspaper that a famous rock star or sports icon has tested H.I.V. positive and discovering that your own mother has been diagnosed with cancer.

Undoubtedly, the most influential people in my life have been my mother and father. It is to them that I credit many of my accomplishments and successes–both inside and outside of school. Throughout my childhood, my parents have always fostered and encouraged me in all my endeavors. At all my sporting events, spelling bees, concerts, and countless other activities, they have always been front row and center. My parents, in conjunction with twelve years of Catholic training, have also instilled in me a sound belief in a loving, caring God, which I have come to firmly believe. It therefore should not come as a surprise that the news of my mothers sickness would greatly alter my entire outlook on life. Where was my God?

My mother, in fact, had been aware of her condition in the spring of my junior year in high school. She deliberately did not inform my sister or me of her illness because she did not want to distract us from our studies. Instead, my mother waited for the completion of her radiation therapy treatments. At this time, she brought me into her room, sat me down on the same wooden rocking chair from which she used to read me bedtime stories, and began to relate her story. I did not weep, I did not flinch. In fact, I hardly even moved, but from that point onward, I vowed that I would do anything and everything to please my mother and make her proud of me.

Every subsequent award won and every honor bestowed upon me has been inspired by the recollection of my mother’s plight. I look to her as a driving force of motivation. In her I see the firm, enduring qualities of courage, strength, hope, and especially love. Whenever I feel discouraged or dispirited, I remember the example set by my mother and soon become reinvigorated. Instead of groveling in my sorrow, I think of all the pain and suffering that my mother had to endure and am revived with new energy after realizing the triviality of my own predicament. For instance, last year, when I was playing in a championship soccer game, my leg became entangled with a forwards leg on the other team, and I wound up tearing my medial cruciate ligament. I was very upset for having injured myself in such a seemingly inane manner. Completely absorbed in my own anguish, I would not talk to anyone and instead lamented on the sidelines. But then I remembered something that my mother used to say to me whenever something like this happened: If this is the worst thing that ever happens to you, I’ll be very happy, and you’ll be very lucky. Instantly, many thoughts race through my mind. I pictured my mother as a young thirteen-year-old walking to the hospital every day after school to visit her sick father. She had always told me how extremely painful it had been to watch his body become emaciated as the cancer advanced day by day and finally took its toll. I then pictured my mother in the hospital, thirty years later, undergoing all the physically and mentally debilitating tests, and having to worry about her husband and her children at the same time. I suddenly felt incredibly ashamed at how immature I had been acting over my own affliction. I gathered my thoughts and instead of sulking or complaining, helped coach my team to victory.

I am very happy to say that my mother is now feeling much better and her periodic checkups and C.A.T. scans have indicated that she is doing very well. Nevertheless, her strength and courage will remain a constant source of inspiration to me. I feel confident to greet the future with a resolute sense of hope and optimism.

    Comments:

The majority of the suggestions for this essay highlight the danger inherent in relying on an overly poignant topic, in this case the writer’s mother’s bout with cancer. Part of why the reactions to this piece are so passionate (and why there are so many of them) is because had the applicant just taken a slightly different approach, he could have had a powerful and touching composition on his hands. It is always frustrating when a piece with so much potential misses the mark. In this case, the material and emotion are all there. Had he spent more time and written with more sincerity, this essay might have been a real winner.

I wish this kid had started the essay with his mom sitting him down in the rocking chair. That would have been a powerful beginning. In general, using the introduction of the essay to paint a scene or mood can be very effective.

He should begin with the most simple and striking sentence possible, such as “On January 5, 1995, my mother learned that she had cancer.” Use real times and exact places. Let the most dramatic point go where it belongs, at the end of the sentence–also known as the stress point.

Because this topic is so personal, I yearn to know more about the student’s reaction to his mom’s cancer, how he and his family dealt with it over time. As written, things just seem a bit too tidy.

The author describes a valuable life lesson, but I find the writing style to be artificial and a bit maudlin. I imagine he resorted to the thesaurus more than once.

The writer tells us a sad story about his mother with cancer and how he has strived to do his best because of what his mother has been through. The topic can be a tear jerker, but this essay lacked the depth and richness that other essays with similar topics possess.

The experience obviously impacted the student very much. But what students do not realize is that they do not have to share such personal issues within the confines of a college essay.

I don’t believe the “epiphany” in the conclusion as it’s described. It’s too easy and convenient to be believable. He begins his description with “For instance,” which negates almost everything that follows. When he sees his mother in his mind, he “instantly” thinks this and “suddenly” does that, and finally “helped coach his team to victory.” He “coached” the team. “Cheered” maybe. “Coached?” No way.

This essay smells of contrivance. Yes, his mother’s bout with cancer affected him. Just not in the way he wants me to believe. This is the “lasting sanctifying effect” essay. Look at what the writer is actually saying (using his own words): I used to be “absorbed in my own anguish” and “lament” my bouts with adversity. But, “instantly” or “suddenly” (take your pick), I became a young man “confident to greet the future with a resolute sense of hope and optimism.” Why not say, “I used to be a thoughtless, immature teenager. My mother got cancer. I’m now a thoughtful, mature adult. You should admit me to _____.” His essay is no less subtle.
